Claims
- 1. A movable barrier operator having a safety mechanism, comprising:an electric motor; a transmission connected to the motor to be driven thereby and connectable to a movable barrier to be moved; a controller, responsive to a command to move the barrier, for controlling activation of the motor, wherein the controller automatically determines whether an accessory control device is present and further controls operation of the accessory control device; and an operating routine for varying activation of the motor based on the controller detecting the presence of the accessory control device, wherein, when the presence of the accessory control device is detected, the controller delays starting the motor for a predetermined time after receiving the command to move the barrier, and the accessory control device causes an alarm during the predetermined delay time.
- 2. The movable barrier operator of claim 1, wherein the operating routine is activated upon the controller detecting the presence of the accessory control device.
- 3. The movable barrier operator of claim 1, wherein the operating routine remains active until the controller causes the motor to be stopped.
- 4. The movable barrier operator of claim 1, wherein the controller, upon detecting the absence of the accessory control device, starts the motor immediately after receiving the command to move the barrier.
- 5. The movable barrier operator of claim 1, wherein the accessory control device causes a visual alarm to be displayed during the predetermined delay time.
- 6. The movable barrier operator of claim 5, wherein the visual alarm is a flashing light.
- 7. The movable barrier operator of claim 1, wherein the accessory control device causes an alarm to be produced while the motor is activated.
- 8. The movable barrier operator of claim 1, wherein the accessory control device comprises a safety controller for controlling a safety device.
- 9. The movable barrier operator of claim 1, wherein the accessory control device comprises an electronics controller for controlling an electronics device.
- 10. A method for moving a movable barrier having a motor and a transmission operably connecting the motor and the movable barrier, the method comprising:receiving a command to move the barrier; controlling, responsive to a command to move the barrier, operation of the motor; automatically determining whether an accessory control device is present; and varying the activation of the motor based on whether the accessory control device is present, wherein, upon detecting the presence of the accessory control device, movement of the movable barrier in response to the command to move the barrier is delayed, and an alarm is produced during the time the movement of the movable barrier is delayed.
- 11. The method of claim 10, further comprising the step of producing an alarm in response to the command to move the barrier and stopping the alarm when the motor is stopped.
- 12. The method of claim 10, further comprising the step of immediately moving the movable barrier upon detecting the absence of the accessory control device.
- 13. A movable barrier operator having a motor and a transmission operably connecting the motor and the movable barrier and a safety mechanism, comprising:means for receiving a command to move the barrier; means for controlling, responsive to a command to move the barrier, operation of the motor; means for automatically determining whether an accessory control device is present; means for varying activation of the motor based on whether the accessory control device is present; means for delaying, in response to the command to move the barrier, movement of the movable barrier upon detecting the presence of the accessory control device; and means for producing an alarm during the time the movement of the movable barrier is delayed.
- 14. The movable barrier operator of claim 13, further comprising means for producing an alarm in response to the command to move the barrier and means for stopping the alarm when the motor is stopped.
- 15. The movable barrier operator of claim 13, further comprising means for immediately moving the movable barrier upon detecting the absence of the accessory control device.
- 16. A movable barrier operator having a safety mechanism, comprising:an electric motor; a transmission connected to the motor to be driven thereby and connectable to a movable barrier to be moved; a controller, responsive to a command to move the barrier, for controlling activation of the motor, wherein the controller automatically determines whether an accessory control device is present; and an operating routine for varying activation of the motor based on the controller detecting the presence of the accessory control device, wherein, when the presence of the accessory control device is detected, the controller delays starting the motor for a noticeable time of about 2 sec after receiving the command to move the barrier.
- 17. A movable barrier operator having a safety mechanism, comprising:an electric motor; a transmission connected to the motor to be driven thereby and connectable to a movable barrier to be moved; a controller, responsive to a command to move the barrier, for controlling activation of the motor, wherein the controlled automatically determines whether a warning module is present; and an operating routine for varying activation of the motor based on the controller detecting the presence of the warning module, wherein, when the presence of the warning module is detected, the controller delays starting the motor for a noticeable time of about 2 sec after receiving the command to move the barrier, and the warning module causes a user warning signal before the barrier starts to move.
