Claims
- 1. A gas mixing plate for a gas puffer circuit interrupter; said circuit interrupter comprising, in combination: a gas-filled housing, a movable interrupter contact and a relatively stationary contact disposed within said housing; means for moving said movable contact between an open and a closed position relative to said stationary contact; an arc interruption region within said housing at which an arc is drawn between said movable and stationary contacts when they separate; an insulation nozzle fixed to said movable contact; gas movement means for forcing gas within said housing through said arc interruption region and through said nozzle and from an upstream location to a downstream location within said housing when said movable contact moves to its said open position; said nozzle having a gas input end and a gas output end; said mixing plate being fixed to said output end of said nozzle and being spaced from said output end to cause the turbulent flow of heated gas as it exits from said nozzle in its downstream flow past said plate.
- 2. The device of claim 1 wherein said gas is SF.sub.6.
- 3. The device of claim 2 which further includes an enlarged hollow conductive housing connected to said stationary contact and containing a large volume of said gas which is to be mixed with turbulent hot gas flowing past said gas mixing plate.
- 4. The device of claim 3 wherein said gas mixing plate is a steel disk.
- 5. The device of claim 1 which further includes an enlarged hollow conductive housing connected to said stationary contact and containing a large volume of said gas which is to be mixed with turbulent hot gas flowing past said gas mixing plate.
- 6. The device of claim 5 wherein said gas mixing plate is a steel disk.
- 7. The device of claim 6 wherein said nozzle moves toward the upstream direction of gas flow when said movable contact moves toward the open position, thereby to evacuate a volume into which cool downstream gas may flow to improve mixing of hot and cool gases downstream of said nozzle.
- 8. The device of claim 5 wherein said nozzle moves toward the upstream direction of gas flow when said movable contact moves toward the open position, thereby to evacuate a volume into which cool downstream gas may flow to improve mixing of hot and cool gas downstream of said nozzle.
- 9. The device of claim 1 wherein said gas mixing plate is a steel disk.
- 10. The device of claim 1 wherein said nozzle moves toward the upstream direction of gas flow when said movable contact moves toward the open position, thereby to evacuate a volume into which cool downstream gas may flow to improve mixing of hot and cool gases downstream of said nozzle.
- 11. A movable nozzle for a puffer circuit interrupter; said movable nozzle having a large area output end which gradually tapers down to a small area input end; said movable nozzle being a cylinder symmetric about a center line and a gas mixing plate fixed to but spaced from said output end of said nozzle; said plate having an area larger than the area of said output end of said nozzle.
- 12. A gas mixing plate for a gas puffer circuit interrupter; said circuit interrupter comprising, in combination: a gas-filled housing, a movable interrupter contact and a relatively stationary contact disposed within said housing; means for moving said movable contact between an open and a closed position relative to said stationary contact; an arc interruption region within said housing at which an arc is drawn between said movable and stationary contacts when they separate; an insulation nozzle fixed to said movable contact; gas movement means for forcing gas within said housing through said arc interruption region and through said nozzle and from an upstream location to a downstream location within said housing when said movable contact moves to its said open position; said nozzle having a gas input end and a gas output end; said mixing plate being fixed to said output end of said nozzle and being spaced from said output end to cause the turbulent flow of heated gas as it exits from said nozzle in its downstream flow past said plate; said nozzle having a large area output end which gradually tapers down to a small area input end; said nozzle being a cylinder symmetric about a center line; said plate having an area larger than the area of said output end.
- 13. The device of claim 12 wherein said gas is SF.sub.6.
- 14. The device of claim 13 which further includes an enlarged hollow conductive housing connected to said stationary contact and containing a large volume of said gas which is to be mixed with turbulent hot gas flowing past said gas mixing plate.
- 15. The device of claim 14 wherein said nozzle moves toward the upstream direction of gas flow when said movable contact moves toward the open position, thereby to evacuate a volume into which cool downstream gas may flow to improve mixing of hot and cool gases downstream of said nozzle.
- 16. The device of claim 12 wherein said nozzle moves toward the upstream direction of gas flow when said movable contact moves toward the open position, thereby to evacuate a volume into which cool downstream gas may flow to improve mixing of hot and cool gases downstream of said nozzle.
- 17. The device of claim 16 wherein said gas is SF.sub.6.
