An award has been made to the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation, Inc. under the direction of Dr. Elison Blancaflor for the acquisition of a spinning disk confocal microscope for research in plant biology and education. The instrument allows for viewing of living plant cells over time and enhances the ability of observers to visualize structures within cells in real time. Research that will benefit includes work on transport of plant hormones within the plant, directional growth of plant cells, growth and spread of bacterial infections in plants, and movement of viruses within plant cells. The microscope will be used in educational programs for students and teachers from local high schools, and for undergraduates and faculty at nearby small colleges and universities.
