Claims
- 1. An ophthalmic preparation comprising a mucin-containing component derived from mammalian milk or a milk byproduct, wherein said mucin-containing component is classified as a MUC1 type mucin.
- 2. An ophthalmic preparation in accordance with claim 1 wherein said preparation is in the form of a solution.
- 3. An ophthalmic preparation in accordance with claim 1 wherein said preparation is in the form of an ointment.
- 4. An ophthalmic preparation in accordance with claim 1 wherein said preparation is in the form of a gel.
- 5. An ophthalmic preparation in accordance with claim 1 wherein said preparation is in the form of an ocular insert.
- 6. An ophthalmic preparation in accordance with claim 1 wherein the mucin-containing component comprises at least 20% mucin by weight.
- 7. An ophthalmic preparation in accordance with claim 1 wherein the mucin-containing component is present in an amount from about 0.001% to about 1.0% by weight.
- 8. An ophthalmic preparation in accordance with claim 1 wherein the mucin-containing component is present in an amount from about 1.0% to about 10.0% by weight.
- 9. An ophthalmic preparation in accordance with claim 1 wherein the mucin-containing component is present in an amount from about 10% to about 90% by weight.
- 10. An ophthalmic preparation in accordance with claim 1 further comprising a buffering agent.
- 11. An ophthalmic preparation in accordance with claim 1 further comprising a viscosity modifying agent.
- 12. An ophthalmic preparation in accordance with claim 1 further comprising a tonicity modifying agent.
- 13. An ophthalmic preparation in accordance with claim 1 further comprising a humectant compound.
- 14. An ophthalmic preparation in accordance with claim 1 further comprising a therapeutic drug.
- 15. An ophthalmic preparation in accordance with claim 1 further comprising a buffering agent plus a viscosity modifying agent.
- 16. An ophthalmic preparation in accordance with claim 1 wherein said milk byproduct comprises whey.
- 17. An ophthalmic preparation in accordance with claim 16, wherein said whey is purified to recover said mucin component.
- 18. An ophthalmic preparation for treating an eye by topically applying the preparation to an ocular surface to provide lubrication and protection to the ocular surface for the relief of dryness and discomfort symptoms, the ophthalmic preparation comprising:a buffered, sterile aqueous solution including a mucin-containing component, wherein said mucin-containing component is derived from mammalian milk or a milk byproduct and is classified as a MUC1 type mucin.
- 19. An ophthalmic preparation in accordance with claim 18, wherein said milk byproduct comprises whey, said whey being purified to recover said mucin component.
- 20. An ophthalmic preparation in accordance with claim 18, wherein said mucin-containing component is classified as a MUC1 type mucin.
- 21. An ophthalmic preparation comprising a mucin-containing component derived from mammalian milk or a milk byproduct, said preparation including said mucin-containing component being autoclavable.
- 22. An ophthalmic preparation in accordance with claim 21, wherein said mucin-containing component is classified as a MUC1 type mucin.
- 23. An ophthalmic preparation in accordance with claim 21, wherein said mucin-containing component is formed of an isolated, purified MUC1 type mucin.
- 24. An ophthalmic preparation in accordance with claim 21, wherein said mucin-containing component is formed entirely of mucin having a single mucin classification.
- 25. A method of treating an eye for dryness and other discomfort symptoms, the method comprising:preparing a buffered, sterile aqueous solution including a mucin-containing component, wherein said mucin-containing component is derived from mammalian milk or a milk byproduct and is classified as a MUC1 type mucin; and topically applying said solution to an ocular surface of the eye.
