Claims
- 1. A composition for enhancing the image contrast in ultrasonic imaging of the digestive tract of humans and animals comprising a physiologically acceptable water insoluble and gel forming carrier phase which when hydrated has differential affinity for the gastrointestinal mucosa in admixture with or bound to echogenic particles in the form of air- or gas-filled microspheres bound by a material envelope, the carrier phase being selected from the group consisting of polysiloxanes and copolymers of acrylic acid cross-linked with polyfunctional allyl acrylates or polyfunctional allyl ethers of glycols or sugars.
- 2. The composition of claim 1, wherein the carrier is further admixed with magnesium alginate, pectin, hydroxylated coatable polysaccharides or Attapulgite clay, Montmorillonite clay or mixtures thereof.
- 3. The composition of claim 1 further comprising a dispersion of contrast-enhancing particles in an aqueous solution of a water-soluble polymer carrier, the amount of said contrast-enhancing particles to said water-soluble polymer carrier, measured dry, not exceeding 5% wt.
- 4. The composition of claim 3 wherein the proportion of said dispersion is up to 100% of the total of the composition, and the water-soluble polymer carrier is selected from the group consisting of dextran, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, carboxymethyl-cellulose, hydroxypropyl-cellulose and other water-soluble non-metabolizable polymers.
- 5. The composition of claim 1, wherein the microspheres are made from poly-L-lactic add.
- 6. The composition of claim 1, wherein the echogenic particles are bonded to the bioadhesive carrier substrate of a chemical coupler.
- 7. The composition of claim 6, wherein said coupler has at least two reactive functions of which one will bind to the echogenic particles and another will bind to the carrier.
- 8. The composition of claim 7, wherein said coupler has a trialkoxy-silane function which binds to the magnetic particles by forming a silicon-containing bond.
