Claims
- 1. An exhaust muffler for an internal combustion engine comprising a metal casing adapted for the passage of exhaust gases therethrough, said metal casing having an exhaust gas inlet and an exhaust gas outlet, and an adsorbent selected from the group consisting of crystalline molecular sieves, activated alumina and mixtures thereof, said adsorbent supported within said muffler casing on an aluminum substrate in the form of a coating on at least one surface of said aluminum substrate, and said adsorbent being supported on said aluminum substrate in a manner which permits contact with said exhaust gas within said metal casing, said adsorbent coating being formed on said substrate by the steps of:
- (a) heating said aluminum substrate in an oxygen-containing atmosphere to a temperature of at least about 200.degree. C. and sufficient to result in the bonding of said coating with said substrate;
- (b) contacting said heated substrate with a slurry comprising said adsorbent and a binder selected from the group consisting of volclay, kaolin, sepiolite, attapulgite, silicates, aluinates, activated alumina, and mixtures thereof in a suspending liquid to form at least one slurry-coated surface on said substrate; and
- (c) removing sufficient liquid from said slurry to form a coating on said at least one surface of said substrate.
- 2. A muffler device according to claim 1, wherein said substrate comprises an internal part of said muffler.
- 3. A muffler device according to claim 2, wherein said internal part of said muffler comprises a perforated tube having an external surface upon which said coating is formed.
- 4. A muffler device according to claim 1, wherein said adsorbent comprises an admixture of a crystalline aluminosilicate having the chabazite crystal structure and a zeolite aluminosilicate having the faujasite crystal structure.
- 5. A muffler device according to claim 4, wherein the zeolite aluminosilicate having the chabazite crystal structure is a mineral chabazite and the zeolite aluminosilicate having the faujasite crystal structure is a Y zeolite having a molar SiO.sub.2 /Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 ratio of from about 4 to 20.
- 6. A muffler device according to claim 1, wherein said liquid is removed by heating said slurry-coated surface to a temperature of at least 200.degree. C.
- 7. A muffler device according to claim 6, wherein said slurry-coated surface is heated to a temperature of between 250.degree. to 650.degree. C.
