Each of the first guide members 22 has two opposite ends fixed respectively to two opposite first wall panels 212, and extends across the hollow space 211.

The first drive 30 is mounted to the housing 11 and connected to the first frame 21 to drive movement of the first frame 21 along the first axis (I) and relative to the housing 11. The first drive 30 includes a first motor 31 mounted to an outer side of one of the housing wall panels 112, and a first screw rod 32 driven by the first motor 31. The first screw rod 32 extends through the housing wall panel 112 on which the first motor 31 is mounted, and engages threadedly one of the first wall panels 212 to drive the first frame 21 to slide on the slide guide members 12.

The second slide 40 includes a second frame 41 that is disposed inside the first frame 21 and that is slidable on the first guide members 22, and a plurality of second guide members 42 mounted movably to the second frame 41, and a pair of end plates 43 fastened fixedly to opposite ends of the second guide members 42. The second frame 41 has four second wall panels 412 that are interconnected to surround a hollow space 411. The first guide members 22 extend through two opposite ones of the second wall panels 412 in a sliding relationship. The second guide members 42 are parallel to a third axis (III) perpendicular to the first and second axes (I), (II), and extend through the other two opposite second wall panels 412 in a sliding relationship. The second guide members 42 are formed as guide rods and extend across the hollow space 411 of the second frame 41. Each of the second guide members 42 has an inner section 421 extending into the second frame 41, and an outer section 422 extending out of the hollow space 411 of the second frame 41 near the workpiece holder 80 for connection with the tool operator 60. The end plates 43 are mounted fixedly to two opposite ends of each second guide member 42 outwardly of the second frame 41.

Referring back to FIGS. 2, 3 and 4, the second drive 50 is connected between the first and second slides 20, 40 to drive the second slide 40 along the second axis (II) relative to the first slide 20. The second drive 50 includes a second motor 51 mounted on one of the first wall panels 212 of the first frame 21, and a second screw rod 52 driven by the second motor 51. The second screw rod 52 extends through the first wall panel 212 on which the second motor 51 is mounted, and engages threadedly one of the second wall panels 412 to drive relative movements of the second frame 41 and the first guide members 22.

Referring once again to FIGS. 1 and 4, the tool operator 60 is mounted on the outer sections 422 of the second guide members 42 for concomitant movement with the second guide members 42 of the second slide 40. In particular, the tool operator 60 is mounted to a front one of the end plates 43, which is connected to the outer sections 422. The tool operator 60 includes a first end portion 61 and a second end portion 62 disposed above the workpiece holder 80. The second end portion 62 is adapted to hold a tool such as a cutter. The tool operator 60 can be moved together with the second guide members 42 to be placed at a position suitable for processing a workpiece (not shown) on the workpiece holder 80.

Referring to FIG. 5 in combination with FIG. 2, the third drive 70 is mounted on the second frame 41 to drive the second guide members 42 so that the tool operator 60 can move along the third axis (III) relative to the second frame 41. The third drive 70 includes a third motor 71 mounted to the end plate 43 opposite to the tool operator 60, and a third screw rod 72 driven by the third motor 71 to move the tool operator 60. The third screw rod 72 engages threadedly one of the second wall panels 412 to drive relative movements of the second guide members 42 and the second frame 41.

The workpiece holder 80 is mounted to the housing 11 proximate to the tool operator 60 and is adapted to hold a workpiece to be processed by the tool on the tool operator 60. The workpiece holder 80 extends along an axis (L). In this embodiment, the axis (L) extends perpendicular to the third axis (III) and parallel to the second axis (II). The workpiece holder 80 includes a support seat 81 fixed to the housing 11, a rotating base 82 mounted on top of the support seat 81, and a power drive 83 for driving the rotating base 82 to rotate. The support seat 81 may be fixed to the first extension plate 113 as shown in solid lines in FIG. 1, or may as well be fixed to the second extension plate 114 as shown in dotted lines in FIG. 1. Alternatively, the axis (L) may be perpendicular to the third axis (III) and parallel to the first axis (I).

As shown in FIGS. 1, 3 and 4, when the first drive 30 is energized, the first frame 21 is driven to move relative to the housing 11 along the first axis (I). When the second drive 50 is energized, the second frame 41 is driven to move relative to the first frame 21 along the second axis (II). When the third drive 70 is energized, the second guide members 42 and the tool operator 60 are driven to move relative to the second frame 41 and along the third axis (III). According to working requirements, the tool operator 60 may be operated to process a workpiece (not shown in the Figure) mounted on the rotating base 82 of the workpiece holder 80.

In the present invention, the housing wall panels 112 of the housing 11, the first wall panels 212 of the first frame 21 and the second wall panels 412 of the second frame 41 can be made from strong metal plates for assembly into the respective hollow structures. The strong metal plates can be fabricated and assembled easily compared to the fabrication and assembly of the component parts of the conventional machine tools. The overall structure of the machine tool of the present invention is simple and can be constructed with high precision and high durability. The hollow bodies of the housing 11, and the first and second frames 21, 41 permits easy access for repair and maintenance.

As described hereinbefore, the movement the first frame 21 along the first axis (I), the movement of the second frame 41 along the second axis (II), and the movement of the tool operator 60 along the third axis (III) are achieved by virtue of relative sliding movements of the first frame 21 and the slide guide members 12, the second frame 41 and the first guide members 22, and the second frame 41 and the second guide members 42. The relative sliding movements are effected by perforating slide holes in the housing wall panels 112, and the first and second wall panels 212, 412 and by extending the slide guide members 12 and the first and second guide members 22, 42 through the slide holes. Because the slide guide members 12 and the first and second guide members 22, 42 are in the form of rods, and because clearances between the slide holes and the rods can be minimized, the machine tools of the present invention can provide high processing precision and can be operated smoothly.

Furthermore, because the workpiece holder 80 can be fixed to one of the first and second extension plates 113, 114 according to the working requirements, operation adaptability can be improved.

Referring to FIGS. 6 and 7, the second preferred embodiment of the multi-axis machine tool is generally identical to the first preferred embodiment. However, the second preferred embodiment is configured as a vertical type machine tool, and the workpiece holder 80 may be connected to the first extension plate 113 or the second extension plate 114 of the main support 10. The axis (L) extends parallel to the third axis (III). By changing the position of the workpiece holder 80, the machine tool of the present invention may be converted from a horizontal type machine tool to a vertical type machine tool or vice versa, unlike the inconvertible conventional machine tool.

It is worth to mention that, the third drive 70 (as shown in FIG. 5) is optional, and may be dispensed with. In this case, the tool operator 60 may be mounted fixedly to the second frame 41, and may be moved along the first and second axes (I) and (II).

While the present invention has been described in connection with what is considered the most practical and preferred embodiments, it is understood that this invention is not limited to the disclosed embodiments but is intended to cover various arrangements included within the spirit and scope of the broadest interpretation so as to encompass all such modifications and equivalent arrangements.
