Claims
- 1. A multi-composition stick product, comprising:
(a) a container having walls, an exterior contour, and an interior contour; and (b) a molded stick composition disposed so as to contact the walls of the container and be advanceable in the container, the stick composition comprising:
(i) a first composition; and (ii) a second composition; wherein the first and second compositions differ by at least one component and the compositions are arranged in a predetermined non-random pattern that is reproducible.
- 2. The multi-composition stick product in accordance with claim 1, wherein the interior and exterior contours of the container are different.
- 3. The multi-composition stick product in accordance with claim 1, wherein the component is a medicament, colorant, fragrance, flavorant, sunscreen, preservative, conditioner, moisturizer, emollient, or surfactant.
- 4. The multi-composition stick product in accordance with claim 3, wherein the component is a colorant.
- 5. The multi-composition stick product in accordance with claim 4, wherein the compositions form a predetermined discrete multicolor image.
- 6. The multi-composition stick product in accordance with claim 5, wherein the image is a heart; evergreen tree; ying-yang; 5-pointed star; 6-pointed star; sun; circle; half and half circle; heart with an arrow; lateral stripes; diagonal stripes (barber pole); longitudinal stripes; happy face; sad face; tree; crescent moon; cross; 4-pointed star; flower; ellipse; wave; lightening bolt; pinwheel; flag; lips; one or more alphanumeric letters; any other geometric shape; or any combination thereof.
- 7. The multi-composition stick product in accordance with claim 5, wherein the stick composition has a longitudinal axis and for at least a portion thereof, each cross-section perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the composition contains the same multicolor image.
- 8. The multi-composition stick product in accordance with claim 1, wherein the stick composition is for topical application to an animal in need thereof.
- 9. The multi-composition stick product in accordance with claim 8, wherein the stick composition is lip balm, lipstick, lip gloss, sunscreen stick, or deodorant.
- 10. The multi-composition stick product in accordance with claim 8, wherein the stick composition comprises a pharmaceutically acceptable vehicle.
- 11. The multi-composition stick product in accordance with claim 9, wherein the stick composition further comprises a medicament, a sunscreen, a preservative, a flavorant, a fragrance, a colorant, a conditioner, a moisturizer, an emollient, a cleansing agent, an antioxidant, an antistatic agent, a stabilizer, a pH adjuster, a surfactant, or any combination thereof.
- 12. A multi-color stick product, comprising:
(a) a container having walls; and (b) a molded multi-color stick composition disposed so as to contact the walls of the container and be advanceable in the container, the stick composition comprising:
(i) a first composition; and (ii) a second composition; wherein the first and second compositions differ in color and are arranged in a predetermined non-random image that is reproducible.
- 13. The multi-color stick product in accordance with claim 12, wherein the stick product is a lip balm.
- 14. A method for manufacturing a multi-composition stick product advanceable from an open end of a container, the method comprising the steps of:
inserting a mold shaft into the container; dispensing a first composition of stick composition into the container around the mold shaft; removing the mold shaft from the container to form a cavity; and filling at least a portion of the cavity with a second composition of stick composition, the first and second compositions differing by at least one component and being arranged in a predetermined non-random pattern that is reproducible.
- 15. The method in accordance with claim 14, wherein the inserting step comprises inserting a portion of a first filling nozzle into the container, the first filling nozzle including a first mold shaft having a first predetermined shape and a first outer barrier disposed about at least a portion of the first mold shaft.
- 16. The method in accordance with claim 15, wherein the dispensing step comprises dispensing the first composition of stick composition into a passageway, defined between the outer surface of the first filling nozzle and the inner surface of the first outer barrier, and into the container around the mold shaft.
- 17. The method in accordance with claim 16, wherein the first mold shaft is hollow.
- 18. The method in accordance with claim 17, wherein the filling step comprises dispensing the second composition of stick composition through the first mold shaft and into the container so as to fill at least a portion of the cavity.
- 19. The method in accordance with claim 16, wherein the first mold shaft is solid or semi-hollow.
- 20. The method in accordance with claim 19, wherein the filling step comprises dispensing, using a second filling nozzle having a second hollow mold shaft of a second predetermined shape, the second composition of stick composition into the second mold shaft so as to fill at least a portion of the cavity.
- 21. The method in accordance with claim 14, wherein the dispensing step comprises dispensing the first composition of stick composition into the container around the mold shaft.
- 22. The method in accordance with claim 14, further comprising the step of finishing the top surface of the stick composition while disposed in the container.
- 23. The method in accordance with claim 22, wherein said finishing step comprises scraping the top surface of the stick composition with a heated scraper.
- 24. The method in accordance with claim 22, wherein said finishing step comprises glazing the top surface of the stick composition.
- 25. The method in accordance with claim 14, wherein the component is a medicament, colorant, fragrance, flavorant, sunscreen, preservative, conditioner, moisturizer, emollient, or surfactant.
- 26. The method in accordance with claim 25, wherein the component is a colorant.
- 27. The method in accordance with claim 26, wherein the first and second compositions are arranged as a discrete predetermined non-random multi-color image that is reproducible.
- 28. The method in accordance with claim 27, wherein for at least a portion of the composition stick, each cross-section in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the composition stick has the same image.
- 29. The method in accordance with claim 14, wherein substantially no mixing occurs at the interface between the first and second compositions.
- 30. The method in accordance with claim 14, wherein the stick product is a lip balm.
- 31. The method in accordance with claim 14, wherein the dispensing step comprises dispensing the first composition of stick composition onto a support tray by which the container is held so that the first composition spills into the container around the mold shaft.
- 32. The method in accordance with claim 31, wherein the filling step comprises dispensing the second composition of stick composition onto the support tray so that the second composition spills into the container and fills at least a portion of the cavity.
- 33. The method in accordance with claim 32, wherein the removing step further comprises finishing the top surface of the first composition.
- 34. The method in accordance with claim 14, further comprising the step of removing excess first and second compositions from the support tray.
- 35. A method for manufacturing a multi-composition stick product advanceable from an open end of a container, the method comprising the steps of:
dispensing a first composition of stick composition into the container; inserting a mold shaft into the container so as to displace the first composition therein; removing the mold shaft from the container to form a cavity; and filling at least a portion of the cavity with a second composition of stick composition, the first and second compositions differing by at least one component and being arranged in a predetermined non-random pattern that is reproducible.
- 36. A system for manufacturing a multi-composition stick product in a container having an inner contour and an outer contour, the stick product including a stick composition comprising a first composition and a second composition, the first and second compositions differing by at least one component and being arranged in a predetermined non-random pattern that is reproducible, comprising:
a filling nozzle comprising: a mold shaft insertable into the container; an outer barrier disposed about at least a portion of the mold shaft so as to form a passageway between the outer barrier and the mold shaft for receiving the first composition.
- 37. The system in accordance with claim 36, wherein the mold shaft is solid or semi-hollow.
- 38. The system in accordance with claim 36, wherein the mold shaft is hollow.
- 39. The system in accordance with claim 36, wherein the inner and outer contours of the container differ in shape.
- 40. The system in accordance with claim 36, wherein the outer barrier is a ring disposed about the mold shaft.
- 41. The system in accordance with claim 36, wherein the mold shaft and the inner contour of the container differ in shape.
- 42. The system in accordance with claim 36, wherein the mold shaft and the outer barrier are of equal length in a longitudinal direction.
- 43. The system in accordance with claim 36, wherein the mold shaft extends beyond the outer barrier in a longitudinal direction.
- 44. A system for simultaneously manufacturing a plurality of multi-composition stick products in a plurality of containers, each stick product including a stick composition comprising a first composition and a second composition, the first and second compositions differing by at least one component and being arranged in a predetermined non-random pattern that is reproducible, comprising:
a support tray having a plurality of holes defined therein for receiving the plural containers; a holding member; and a plurality of interchangeable filling nozzles, each filling nozzle being secured to the holding member by an associated releaseable locking member, and each filling nozzle comprising: a mold shaft insertable into an associated container; an outer barrier disposed about at least a portion of the mold shaft so as to form a passageway between the mold shaft and outer barrier for receiving the first composition.
- 45. The system in accordance with claim 44, wherein the releaseable locking member is a pin, clip or clamp.
- 46. A multi-composition stick product prepared by the method of claim 14.
- 47. A system for manufacturing a multi-composition stick product in a container having an inner contour and an outer contour, the stick product including a stick composition comprising a first composition and a second composition, the first and second compositions being dispensed simultaneously, differing by at least one component and being arranged in a predetermined non-random pattern that is reproducible, comprising:
a first filling nozzle for dispensing the first composition; a second filling nozzle for dispensing the second composition; and a securing mechanism for connecting the first and second filling nozzles, the assembled first and second filling nozzles being insertable into the container.
- 48. A method for manufacturing a multi-composition stick product using the system in claim 47, wherein said filling nozzles and said container are rotated independently of one another.
- 49. A system for manufacturing a multi-composition stick product advanceable from a container, comprising:
a cork screw shaped mold shaft adapted so as to be received in said container.
- 50. A method for manufacturing a multi-composition stick product advanceable from a container having an inner contour, comprising the steps of:
inserting a cork screw shaped mold shaft into the container, said mold shaft including a plurality of spiral revolutions; dispensing a first composition of stick composition into the container between the spiral revolutions of the mold shaft; rotating while removing the mold shaft from the container to form a spiral cavity about a perimeter of the inner contour of the container; and filling at least a portion of the spiral cavity with a second composition of stick composition, the first and second compositions differing by at least one component and being arranged in a predetermined non-random pattern that is reproducible.
- 51. A system for manufacturing a plurality of multi-composition stick products in a plurality of containers, each stick product including a stick composition comprising a first composition and a second composition, the first and second compositions differing by at least one component and being arranged in a predetermined non-random pattern that is reproducible, comprising:
a plurality of support trays, each support tray having a plurality of holes defined therein for receiving the plural containers; a conveyor belt for receiving the support trays and moving the support trays from a first end of the conveyor belt to a second end of the conveyor belt past a plurality of stations; a first one of said stations comprising:
a filling nozzle having a predetermined number of ejection heads for filling the containers with the first composition in a liquid state; a second one of said stations comprising:
a mold shaft insertable into an associated container while said first composition is in the liquid state; a third one of said stations comprising:
a device for removing the mold shaft from the associated container after the first composition has begun to solidify, thereby forming a cavity complementary in shape to that of the respective mold shaft in the first composition in each associated container; a fourth one of said stations comprising:
a second filling nozzle having a predetermined number of ejection heads for filling the cavities with the second composition in a liquid state.
- 52. The system according to claim 51, further comprising:
a fifth one of said stations comprising:
a scraper for removing excess second composition from the filled containers received in the support trays after the second composition has solidified.
- 53. The system according to claim 52, wherein said fifth station further comprises a glazing plate for contacting a top surface of the first and second composition in each container, said glazing plate being heated between 100° and 300° F., thereby causing the top surface to melt and resolidfy to provide a smooth finished surface.
- 54. The system according to claim 52, further comprising:
a sixth one of said stations comprising:
a glazing lamp disposed above the conveyor belt causing a top surface of the first and second composition in each container to melt and resolidify to provide a smooth finished surface.
- 55. The system according to claim 51, wherein the filling nozzle is fan-shaped.
- 56. The system according to claim 51, wherein the filling nozzle has one ejection head for each row of containers received in the support tray.
- 57. The system according to claim 51, wherein the filling nozzle has one ejection head for each container received in the support tray.
- 58. The system according to claim 51, wherein the mold shaft is tapered by at lest 0.5° to prevent excessive vacuum build up when the mold shaft is removed from the container.
- 59. The system according to claim 51, wherein the mold shaft is tapered by approximately 1°.
- 60. The system according to claim 51, wherein the mold shaft is at least semi-hollow.
- 61. The system according to claim 60, wherein a distal end of the mold shaft has a beveled opening to facilitate insertion of the mold shaft into the respective container.
- 62. The system according to claim 51, wherein the mold shaft is coated with a hydrophilic material.
- 63. The system according to claim 62, wherein the hydrophilic material is polyester.
- 64. The system according to claim 51, wherein at least one of the mold shafts has a different outer contour than another one of the mold shafts.
- 65. The system according to claim 51, wherein the mold shaft and the inner contour of the container differ in shape.
- 66. The system according to claim 51, wherein the fourth station further comprises:
a first plate disposed adjacent to the second filling nozzle and above the conveyor belt to ensure that the second composition fills the cavities and to reduce the amount of excess second composition.
- 67. The system according to claim 66, wherein the fourth station further comprises:
a second plate, the first plate being disposed between the second plate and the second filling nozzle, the second plate cleans the top of each tray of excess first and second composition as each tray passes through the fourth station.
- 68. A method for manufacturing a plurality of multi-composition stick products advanceable from an open end of a container, the method comprising the steps of:
placing a plurality of support trays on a conveyor belt, each support tray having a plurality of holes defined therein for receiving a plurality of containers; moving the support trays from a first end of the conveyor belt to a second end of the conveyor belt past a plurality of stations; filling the containers with a first composition in a liquid state with a filling nozzle having a predetermined number of ejection heads; inserting a mold shaft into an associated container while the first composition is in the liquid state; removing the mold shaft from the associated container after the first composition has begun to solidify, thereby forming a cavity complementary in shape to that of the respective mold shaft in the first composition in each associated container; filling the cavities with a second composition in a liquid state, with a second filling nozzle having a predetermined number of ejection heads, the second composition differing by at least one component from the first component.
- 69. The method according to claim 68, further comprising the step of:
removing excess second composition from the filled containers received in the support trays after the second composition has solidified.
- 70. The method according to claim 69, further comprises the step of:
glazing a top surface of the first and second composition in each container, thereby causing the top surface to melt and resolidfy to provide a smooth finished surface.
