Claims
- 1. An electrical connector component comprising:a support block; a plurality of elongated and strip-like contact leads supported by the support block, each of the contact leads having a first connection portion suitable for making contact with an external connector device, a second connection portion, and a third connection portion suitable for making contact with traces on an electrical device; and wherein each second connection portion includes a lengthwise section of a contact lead wherein a lengthwise section of an electrical wire can be aligned with and laid upon the lengthwise section of the second connection portion, wherein the contact leads also have a curved configuration such that the third connection portion of the contact leads are offset from a longitudinal axis of the second connection portions, whereby the second and third connection portions of the contact leads form a leaf spring configuration.
- 2. An electrical connector component as recited in claim 1 wherein the second connection portions and the third connection portions are located on opposing surfaces of the contact leads.
- 3. An electrical connector component as recited in claim 1 wherein the first connection portion of each of the contact leads is also offset from the longitudinal axis of the second connection portions.
- 4. An electrical connector component as recited in claim 1 further comprising:a registration block having a plurality of registration recesses, each of the registration recesses being positioned proximate to the second connection portion of an associated contact lead and configured to receive and position an end portion of an associated wire to be connected to the second connection portion of the associated contact lead.
- 5. An electrical connector component as recited in claim 1 further comprising:an elongated and recessed trough that is positioned within the second connection portion of each contact lead, whereby a lengthwise section of an electrical wire can rest within each elongated and recessed trough.
- 6. An electrical connector component comprising:a support block; a plurality of contact leads supported by the support block, each of the contact leads having a first connection portion suitable for making contact with an external connector device, a second connection portion suitable for making contact with electrical wires, and a third connection portion suitable for making contact with traces on an electrical device, wherein the second connection portion of the contact leads have a longitudinal axis and the contact leads have a curved configuration such that the third connection portion of the contact leads are offset from the longitudinal axis of the second connection portions, whereby the second and third connection portions of the contact leads form a leaf spring configuration; a registration block having a plurality of registration recesses, each of the registration recesses being positioned proximate to the second connection portion of an associated contact lead and configured to receive and position an end portion of an associated wire to be connected to the second connection portion of the associated contact lead; and a wire retention comb supported by the plurality of contact leads and spaced apart from the registration block such that the second connection portion is exposed between the registration block and the wire retention comb, the wire retention comb including a row of teeth wherein at least one adjacent pair of teeth is configured to secure an associated wire that is to be connected to the second connection portion of a selected one of the contact leads.
- 7. An electrical connector component as recited in claim 6 wherein the registration recesses have registration surfaces that are aligned along an axis such that when wires are attached to the second connection portions of the contact leads with their respective wire ends engaging the registration surfaces, the ends of the wires are aligned along the axis.
- 8. An electrical connector component as recited in claim 6 wherein the registration recesses position the end portion of the associated wires such that the longitudinal axes of the segment of the wires to be connected to the second connection portions of the contact leads are aligned with the longitudinal axes of the associated contact leads.
- 9. An electrical connector component as recited in claim 6 wherein each of the registration recesses have a depth and wherein each of the registration recesses have substantially the same depth.
- 10. An electrical connector component as recited in claim 9 wherein a top and a bottom surface of the second connection portion of each of the contact leads is exposed between the registration block and the wire retention comb.
- 11. An electrical connector comprising:a pair of electrical connector components, each of the electrical connector components including, a support block; a plurality of contact leads supported by the support block, each of the contact leads having a first connection portion suitable for making contact with an external connector device, a second connection portion suitable for making contact with electrical wires, and a third connection portion suitable for making contact with traces on an electrical device; and wherein the second connection portion of the contact leads have a longitudinal axis and the contact leads have a curved configuration such that the third connection portion of the contact leads are offset from the longitudinal axis of the second connection portions, whereby the second and third connection portions of the contact leads form a leaf spring configuration, wherein each of the electrical connector components are attached to each other to form the electrical connector.
- 12. An electrical connector as recited in claim 11 wherein the second connection portions and the third connection portions are located on opposing surfaces of the contact leads and wherein the plurality of contact leads within each of the electrical connector components form a slot into which a electrical device can be inserted.
- 13. An electrical connector as recited in claim 12 wherein the distance between respective third connection portions in each of the electrical connector components is smaller than the distance between respective second connection portions in each of the electrical connector components.
- 14. An electrical connector as recited in claim 11 wherein each of the electrical connector components further comprise:a registration block having a plurality of registration recesses being positioned proximate to the second connection portion of an associated contact lead and configured to receive and position an end portion of an associated wire to be connected to the second connection portion of the associated contact lead.
- 15. An electrical connector as recited in claim 14 wherein each of the registration recesses has a center and wherein the distance between the centers of each pair of adjacent registration recesses on each of the electrical connector components is approximately 0.8 mm.
- 16. An electrical connector as recited in claim 14 wherein each of the registration recesses have a depth and wherein each of the registration recesses have substantially the same depth.
- 17. An electrical connector as recited in claim 14 wherein the registration recesses of each registration block have registration surfaces that are aligned along respective axes such that when wires are attached to the second connection portions of the contact leads with their respective wire ends engaging the registration surfaces, the ends of the wires are aligned along a respective axis.
- 18. An electrical connector as recited in claim 14 wherein the registration recesses position the end portion of the associated wires such that the longitudinal axes of the segment of the wires to be connected to the second connection portions of the contact leads are aligned with the longitudinal axes of the associated contact leads.
- 19. An electrical connector as recited in claim 14 wherein each of the electrical connector components further comprise:a wire retention comb supported by the plurality of contact leads and spaced apart from the registration block such that the second connection portion is exposed between the registration block and the wire retention comb, the wire retention comb including a row of teeth wherein at least one adjacent pair of teeth is configured to secure an associated wire that is to be connected to the second connection portion of a selected one of the contact leads.
- 20. An electrical connector as recited in claim 19 wherein one of the pair of electrical connector components is a first connector component and the other is a second connector component, the electrical connector further comprising:a first latch having a panel and at least two clasps wherein one clasp extends from a first end of the panel and another clasp extends from a second end of the panel, the panel covering at least a portion of the wire retention comb of the first connector component and the clasps secured to the second connector component such that the clasps lock the first and second connector components together, the panel being suitable for making contact with the wires connected to the second connection portion of the contact leads such that the wires are locked into the teeth of the retention comb of the first connector component.
- 21. An electrical connector as recited in claim 20 further comprising:a second latch having a panel and at least two clasps wherein one clasp extends from a first end of the panel and another clasp extends from a second end of the panel, the panel covering at least a portion of the wire retention comb of the second connector component and the clasps secured to the first connector component such that the clasps lock the first and second connector components together, the panel being suitable for making contact with the wires connected to the second connection portion of the contact leads such that the wires are locked into the teeth of the retention comb of the second connector component.
- 22. An electrical connector as recited in claim 11 wherein the electrical connector components are substantially identical.
- 23. An electrical connector component comprising:a support block having a first surface; and a plurality of elongated and strip-like contact leads that have a top surface and a bottom surface, each of the contact leads having approximately an s-shape in that they extend out of the first surface of the support block along a first axis, bend away from the first axis, and then bend again so that at least a portion of each contact lead extends along a second axis that is parallel to the first axis, wherein the top surface of each of the contact leads along the first axis forms an elongated top contact region that allows a lengthwise section of an external wire to be aligned with and laid upon the elongated top contact region, and wherein the bottom surface of each of the contact leads along the second axis forms a bottom contact region suitable for connection to an electrical device.
- 24. An electrical connector component as recited in claim 23 wherein the support block has a second surface that is opposite to the first surface and wherein each of the contact leads also extend out of the second surface to form front contact regions.
- 25. An electrical connector component as recited in claim 24 wherein the front contact regions are on the top surface of each contact lead.
- 26. An electrical connector component as recited in claim 25 wherein the support block includes an integrally formed termination strip that extends out of the second surface of the support block and supports the portion of the contact leads that extend out of the second surface of the support block.
- 27. An electrical connector component as recited in claim 24 wherein the top contact regions lie in a first plane and the front contact regions lie in a second plane, the second plane being offset from the first plane.
- 28. An electrical connector component as recited in claim 23 further comprising:a registration block having a plurality of registration recesses, each of the registration recesses being positioned proximate to the top contact region of an associated contact lead and configured to receive and position an end portion of an associated wire to be connected to the top contact region of the associated contact lead.
- 29. An electrical connector component as recited in claim 23 further comprising:an elongated and recessed trough that is positioned within the top contact region of each contact lead, whereby a lengthwise section of an external wire can rest within each elongated and recessed trough.
- 30. An electrical connector component comprising:a support block having a first surface; a plurality of elongated contact leads that have a top surface and a bottom surface, each of the contact leads having approximately an s-shape in that they extend out of the first surface of the support block along a first axis, bend away from the first axis, and then bend again so that at least a portion of each contact lead extends along a second axis that is parallel to the first axis, wherein the top surface of each of the contact leads along the first axis forms a top contact region suitable for connection to external wires and wherein the bottom surface of each of the contact leads along the second axis forms a bottom contact region suitable for connection to an electrical device; a registration block having a plurality of registration recesses, each of the registration recesses being positioned proximate to the top contact region of an associated contact lead and configured to receive and position an end portion of an associated wire to be connected to the top contact region of the associated contact lead; and a wire retention comb supported by the plurality of contact leads and spaced apart from the registration block such that the top contact regions are exposed between the registration block and the wire retention comb, the wire retention comb including a row of teeth wherein at least one adjacent pair of teeth is configured to secure an associated wire that is to be connected to the top contact region of a selected one of the contact leads.
- 31. An electrical connector component as recited in claim 30 wherein the registration recesses have registration surfaces that are aligned along an axis such that when wires are attached to the top contact regions of the contact leads with their respective wire ends engaging the registration surfaces, the ends of the wires are aligned along the axis.
- 32. An electrical connector component as recited in claim 30 wherein the registration recesses position the end portion of the associated wires such that the longitudinal axes of the segment of the wires to be connected to the top contact regions of the contact leads are aligned with the longitudinal axes of the associated contact leads.
- 33. An electrical connector component as recited in claim 30 wherein each of the registration recesses have a depth and wherein each of the registration recesses have substantially the same depth.
- 34. An electrical connector component as recited in claim 30 wherein the top and bottom surface of each contact lead in the section along the second axis is exposed between the registration block and the wire retention comb.
- 35. An electrical connector comprising:a pair of electrical connector components, each of the electrical connector components including, a support block having a first surface; and a plurality of elongated contact leads that have a top surface and a bottom surface, each of the contact leads having approximately an s-shape in that they extend out of the first surface of the support block along a first axis, bend away from the first axis, and then bend again so that at least a portion of each contact lead extends along a second axis that is parallel to the first axis, wherein the top surface of each of the contact leads along the first axis forms a top contact region suitable for connection to external wires and wherein the bottom surface of each of the contact leads along the second axis forms a bottom contact region suitable for connection to an electrical device, wherein each of the electrical connector components are attached to each other to form the electrical connector.
- 36. An electrical connector as recited in claim 35 wherein the electrical connector components are referred to as a first and a second electrical connector component, the plurality of contact leads within the first and second electrical connector components form a slot into which an electrical device can be inserted, and wherein the distance between a bottom contact region of the first electrical connector component and a bottom contact region of the second electrical connector component is less than the distance between a top contact region of the first electrical connector component and a top contact region of the second electrical connector component.
- 37. An electrical connector as recited in claim 35 wherein each of the electrical connector components further comprise:a registration block having a plurality of registration recesses positioned proximate to the top contact region of an associated contact lead and configured to receive and position an end portion of an associated wire to be connected to the top contact region of the associated contact lead.
- 38. An electrical connector as recited in claim 37 wherein each of the registration recesses has a center and wherein the distance between the centers of each pair of adjacent registration recesses on each of the electrical connector components is approximately 0.8 mm.
- 39. An electrical connector as recited in claim 37 wherein each of the registration recesses have a depth and wherein each of the registration recesses have substantially the same depth.
- 40. An electrical connector as recited in claim 37 wherein the registration recesses of each registration block have registration surfaces that are aligned along respective axes such that when wires are attached to the top contact regions of the contact leads with their respective wire ends engaging the registration surfaces, the ends of the wires are aligned along a respective axis.
- 41. An electrical connector as recited in claim 37 wherein the registration recesses position the end portion of the associated wires such that the longitudinal axes of the segment of the wires to be connected to the top contact regions of the contact leads are aligned with the longitudinal axes of the associated contact leads.
- 42. An electrical connector as recited in claim 37 wherein each of the electrical connector components further comprise:a wire retention comb supported by the plurality of contact leads and spaced apart from the registration block such that the top contact regions are exposed between the registration block and the wire retention comb, the wire retention comb including a row of teeth wherein at least one adjacent pair of teeth is configured to secure an associated wire that is to be connected to the top contact region of a selected one of the contact leads.
- 43. An electrical connector as recited in claim 42 wherein one of the pair of electrical connector components is a first connector component and the other is a second connector component, the electrical connector further comprising:a first latch having a panel and at least two clasps wherein one clasp extends from a first end of the panel and another clasp extends from a second end of the panel, the panel covering at least a portion of the wire retention comb of the first connector component and the clasps secured to the second connector component such that the clasps lock the first and second connector components together, the panel being suitable for making contact with the wires connected to the top contact region of the contact leads such that the wires are locked into the teeth of the retention comb of the first connector component.
- 44. An electrical connector as recited in claim 43 further comprising:a second latch having a panel and at least two clasps wherein one clasp extends from a first end of the panel and another clasp extends from a second end of the panel, the panel covering at least a portion of the wire retention comb of the second connector component and the clasps secured to the first connector component such that the clasps lock the first and second connector components together, the panel being suitable for making contact with the wires connected to the top contact region of the contact leads such that the wires are locked into the teeth of the retention comb of the second connector component.
- 45. An electrical connector as recited in claim 35 wherein the electrical connector components are substantially identical.
- 46. An electrical connector component comprising:a support block; a plurality of contact leads supported by the support block, each of the contact leads having a first connection portion suitable for making contact with an external connector device, a second connection portion suitable for making contact with electrical wires, and a third connection portion suitable for making contact with traces on an electrical device, wherein the second connection portion of the contact leads have a longitudinal axis and the contact leads have a curved configuration such that the third connection portion of the contact leads are offset from the longitudinal axis of the second connection portions, whereby the second and third connection portions of the contact leads form a leaf spring configuration; and a registration block having a plurality of registration recesses, each of the registration recesses being positioned proximate to the second connection portion of an associated contact lead and configured to receive and position an end portion of an associated wire to be connected to the second connection portion of the associated contact lead, wherein each of the registration recesses has a center and wherein the distance between the centers of each pair of adjacent registration recesses is approximately 0.8 mm.
- 47. An electrical connector component comprising:a support block having a first surface; a plurality of elongated contact leads that have a top surface and a bottom surface, each of the contact leads having approximately an s-shape in that they extend out of the first surface of the support block along a first axis, bend away from the first axis, and then bend again so that at least a portion of each contact lead extends along a second axis that is parallel to the first axis, wherein the top surface of each of the contact leads along the first axis forms a top contact region suitable for connection to external wires and wherein the bottom surface of each of the contact leads along the second axis forms a bottom contact region suitable for connection to an electrical device; and a registration block having a plurality of registration recesses, each of the registration recesses being positioned proximate to the top contact region of an associated contact lead and configured to receive and position an end portion of an associated wire to be connected to the top contact region of the associated contact lead, wherein each of the registration recesses has a center and wherein the distance between the centers of each pair of adjacent registration recesses is approximately 0.8 mm.
