Claims
- 1. A multi-grip blind rivet, which comprises:
a mandrel; a hollow cylindrical body having an outer surface and formed about an axis thereof and adapted to receive at least a portion of the mandrel therethrough, a first plurality of indentations formed in the outer surface of the hollow cylindrical body in a first transaxial plane; a second plurality of indentations formed in the outer surface of the hollow cylindrical body in a second transaxial plane spaced axially from the first transaxial plane; and at least one indentation of the first and second plurality of indentations formed with a base surface having a convex portion.
- 2. The multi-grip blind rivet as set forth in claim 1, which further comprises:
the base surface of the at least one indentation of the first and second plurality of indentations formed with a first transaxial edge and a second transaxial edge spaced axially from the first transaxial edge; and the first transaxial edge having a nonlinear portion such that axial distances between a plurality of pairs of axially spaced points of the first and second transaxial edges varies along the nonlinear portion of the first transaxial edge.
- 3. The multi-grip blind rivet as set forth in claim 2, which further comprises:
the second transaxial edge having a nonlinear portion such that axial distances between a plurality of pairs of axially spaced points of the first and second transaxial edges varies along the nonlinear portions of the first and second transaxial edges.
- 4. The multi-grip blind rivet as set forth in claim 2, which further comprises:
the first transaxial edge being formed in the shape of an arc extending in an axial direction away from the second transaxial edge.
- 5. The multi-grip blind rivet as set forth in claim 4, which further comprises:
the second transaxial edge being formed in the shape of an arc extending in an axial direction away from the first transaxial edge.
- 6. The multi-grip blind rivet as set forth in claim 5, which further comprises:
the arcs of the first and second transaxial edges of the base surface being of the same shape and in an orientation in which the first and second transaxial edges are concave toward each other.
- 7. The multi-grip blind rivet as set forth in claim 1, which further comprises:
each indentation of the first and second plurality of indentations formed with the base surface including the convex portion.
- 8. The multi-grip blind rivet as set forth in claim 1, which further comprises:
the base surface of the at least one indentation of the first and second plurality of indentations formed with an endless outboard edge around the base surface; and the at least one indentation formed with an intermediate surface which extends between, and is contiguous with, the outer surface of the hollow cylindrical body and the entirety of the endless outboard edge of the base surface.
- 9. The multi-grip blind rivet as set forth in claim 2, which further comprises:
the base surface of the at least one indentation of the first and second plurality of indentations formed with an endless outboard edge around the base surface; and the at least one indentation formed with an intermediate surface which extends between, and is contiguous with, the outer surface of the hollow cylindrical body and the entirety of the endless outboard edge of the base surface.
- 10. The multi-grip blind rivet as set forth in claim 9, which further comprises:
the intermediate surface is flared outward in a direction away from the endless outer edge of the base surface.
- 11. The multi-grip blind rivet as set forth in claim 9, which further comprises:
a plurality of differently oriented surfaces integrally and continuously joined about the endless outboard edge of the base surface to form the intermediate surface.
- 12. The multi-grip blind rivet as set forth in claim 1, which further comprises:
a third plurality of indentations formed in the outer surface of the hollow cylindrical body in a third transaxial plane spaced axially from the first and second transaxial planes; and the second transaxial plane being located between the first and third transaxial planes and being closer to one of the first and third transaxial planes than to the other plane.
- 13. The multi-grip blind rivet as set forth in claim 9, which further comprises:
the base surface of the at least one indentation of the first and second plurality of indentations being formed as a work hardened surface.
- 14. A multi-grip blind rivet; which comprises:
a mandrel; a hollow cylindrical body having an outer surface and formed about an axis thereof and adapted to receive at least a portion of the mandrel therethrough; a first plurality of indentations formed in the outer surface of the hollow cylindrical body in a first transaxial plane; a second plurality of indentations formed in the outer surface of the hollow cylindrical body in a second transaxial plane spaced axially from the first transaxial plane; each of the first plurality and second plurality of indentations formed with a base surface having a first transaxial edge and a second transaxial edge spaced axially from the first transaxial edge; and the first transaxial edge having a nonlinear portion such that axial distances between a plurality of pairs of axially spaced points of the first and second transaxial edges varies along the nonlinear portion of the first transaxial.
- 15. The multi-grip blind rivet as set forth in claim 14, which further comprises:
the second transaxial having a nonlinear portion such that axial distances between a plurality of pairs of axially spaced points of the first and second transaxial edges varies along the nonlinear portions of the first and second transaxial edges.
- 16. The multi-grip blind rivet as set forth in claim 14, which further comprises:
the first transaxial edge being formed in the shape of an arc extending in an axial direction away from the second transaxial edge.
- 17. The multi-grip blind rivet as set forth in claim 16, which further comprises:
the second transaxial edge being formed in the shape of an arc extending in an axial direction away from the first transaxial edge.
- 18. The multi-grip blind rivet as set forth in claim 17, which further comprises:
the arcs of the first and second transaxial edges of each base surface being of the same shape and in an orientation in which the first and second transaxial edges are concave toward each other.
- 19. The multi-grip blind rivet as set forth in claim 14, which further comprises:
each base surface having an endless outboard edge around the respective base surface; and each of the first plurality and the second plurality of indentations formed with an intermediate surface which extends between, and is contiguous with, the outer surface of the hollow cylindrical body and the entirety of the endless outboard edge of the base surface.
- 20. A multi-grip blind rivet, which comprises:
a mandrel; a hollow cylindrical body having an outer surface and formed about an axis thereof and adapted to receive at least a portion of the mandrel therethrough; a first plurality of indentations formed in the outer surface of the cylindrical body in a first transaxial plane; a second plurality of indentations formed in the outer surface of the cylindrical body in a second transaxial plane spaced axially from the first transaxial plane; each of the first plurality and second plurality of indentations formed with a base surface having an endless outboard edge around the base surface; and each of the first plurality and second plurality of indentations formed with an intermediate surface which extends between, and is contiguous with, the outer surface of the hollow cylindrical body and the entirety of the endless outboard edge of the base surface.
- 21. A multi-grip blind rivet, which comprises:
a mandrel; a hollow cylindrical body having an outer surface and formed about an axis thereof and adapted to receive at least a portion of the mandrel therethrough, a first plurality of indentations formed in the outer surface of the cylindrical body in a first location; a second plurality of indentations formed in the outer surface of the cylindrical body in a second location spaced axially from the first location; at least one indentation of the combined first and second plurality of indentations formed with a base surface having a first transaxial edge and a second transaxial edge spaced axially from the first; a first portion of the first transaxial edge being spaced axially from a first portion of the second transaxial edge by a prescribed distance; and a second portion of the first transaxial edge, spaced laterally from the first portion thereof, being spaced axially from a second portion of the second transaxial edge by a distance different than the prescribed distance.
- 22. A multi-grip blind rivet, which comprises:
a mandrel; a hollow cylindrical body having an outer circumferential surface formed about an axis thereof by a prescribed radius and adapted to receive at least a portion of the mandrel therethrough, a first plurality of indentations formed in the outer surface of the cylindrical body in a first location; a second plurality of indentations formed in the outer surface of the cylindrical body in a second location spaced axially from the first location; and at least one indentation of the combined first and second plurality of indentations formed with a base surface having an outer arc surface formed partially about the axis of the hollow cylindrical body by a radius less than the prescribed radius.
- 23. A multi-grip blind rivet, which comprises:
a mandrel; a hollow cylindrical body having an outer surface formed at a prescribed radius about an axis thereof and adapted to receive at least a portion of the mandrel therethrough; a plurality of indentations formed in the outer surface of the cylindrical body in a transaxial plane; each indentation of the plurality of indentations having an arc surface facing outward of the hollow cylindrical body and formed at a radius about the axis of the hollow cylindrical body less than the prescribed radius.
- 24. The multi-grip blind rivet as set forth in claim 23, which further comprises:
the arc surface of each indentation being located on an imaginary circle which is concentric with, and within, a circle coincidental with the circumference of the outer surface of the hollow cylindrical body.
- 25. The multi-grip blind rivet as set forth in claim 23, which further comprises:
a plurality of ribs formed in the transaxial plane with each rib separating an adjacent pair of the indentations.
- 26. The multi-grip blind rivet as set forth in claim 25, which further comprises:
each of the plurality of ribs has an outboard surface which is formed by a respective portion of the outer surface of the hollow cylindrical body.
- 27. A multi-grip blind rivet, which comprises:
a mandrel; a hollow cylindrical body having an outer surface and formed about an axis thereof and adapted to receive at least a portion of the mandrel therethrough, a plurality of indentations formed in the outer surface of the cylindrical body; and at least one indentation of the plurality of indentations formed with a base surface having a convex portion.
- 28. A multi-grip blind rivet, which comprises:
a mandrel; a hollow cylindrical body having an outer surface and formed about an axis thereof and adapted to receive at least a portion of the mandrel therethrough, a plurality of indentations formed in the outer surface of the cylindrical body; at least one indentation of the plurality of indentations formed with a base surface having a first transaxial edge extending along a length thereof and a second transaxial edge spaced axially from the first transaxial edge; and the first transaxial edge having nonlinear portions such that axial distances between a plurality of pairs of axially spaced points of the first and second transaxial edges varies along the length of the first transaxial edge.
- 29. A multi-grip blind rivet, which comprises:
a mandrel; a hollow cylindrical body having an outer surface and formed about an axis thereof and adapted to receive at least a portion of the mandrel therethrough, a plurality of indentations formed in the outer surface of the hollow cylindrical body; at least one of the plurality of indentations formed with a base surface having an endless outboard edge around the base surface; and the at least one indentation of the plurality of indentations formed with an intermediate surface which extends between, and is contiguous with, the outer surface of the hollow cylindrical body and the entirety of the endless outboard edge of the base surface.
