Claims
- 1. A multi-purpose weapon system comprising:
a military land vehicle; a first multiple missile system operably attached to the military land vehicle and selectively positionable in both vertical and horizontal orientations and selectively movable to multiple heights relative to the military land vehicle for direct targeting of the first multiple missile system against short and medium range land targets; and a second multiple missile system operably attached to the military land vehicle in a fixed and generally vertical orientation for indirect targeting against long range land targets or against air targets.
- 2. The multi-purpose weapon system of claim 1, wherein the means for moving the transport vehicle comprises an internal combustion engine and at least one wheel that is operably connect to the internal combustion engine and to the frame.
- 3. The multi-purpose weapon system of claim 2, wherein the at least one wheel comprises a plurality of wheels and wherein the means for moving the transport vehicle further comprises a track that extends around the plurality of wheels.
- 4. The multi-purpose weapon system of claim 1, wherein the transport vehicle further comprises a substantially enclosed region that is adapted to receive an operator who controls the operation of the transport vehicle and the multi-purpose launcher.
- 5. The multi-purpose weapon system of claim 1, wherein the first multiple missile system comprises:
a base that is pivotally mounted to the frame; a missile array that includes at least one missile; and a mounting mechanism that rotatably and pivotally attaches the missile array to the base.
- 6. The multi-purpose weapon system of claim 1, wherein the first multiple missile system comprises a first launching module and a second launching module, and wherein the first launching module and the second launching module each comprises:
a base that is pivotally mounted to the frame; a missile array that includes at least one missile; and a mounting mechanism that rotatably and pivotally attaches the missile array to the base.
- 7. The multi-purpose weapon system of claim 1, wherein the first multiple missile system is movable between a retracted position and an extended position.
- 8. The multi-purpose weapon system of claim 1, wherein the first multiple missile system is movable between a retracted position and a reloading position.
- 9. The multi-purpose weapon system of claim 1, wherein the second multiple missile system is removably attachable to the transportable base.
- 10. The multi-purpose weapon system of claim 1, wherein the second multiple missile system includes a plurality of missile modules removably mounted therein, and wherein each of the missiles modules is capable of holding one missile.
- 11. A multi-purpose missile launcher system comprising:
a military land vehicle; a weapon system platform operably attached to the military land vehicle; and a first missile system operably attached to the weapon system platform and including at least a pair of independently positionable multiple missile modules carried in a retracted position during transport and selectively movable to an extended position for firing.
- 12. The missile launcher system of claim 11, wherein each multiple missile module is to operably attached to a platform that pivots from a substantially vertical orientation in the retracted position to a substantially horizontal orientation in the extended position.
- 13. The missile launcher system of claim 11, wherein each multiple missile module is operably attached to the platform by a mounting mechanism that includes a rotatable base and at least one elevatable support arm to enable the missile module to be both rotated and elevated in the extended position.
- 14. A method of launching a first missile and a second missile, the method comprising:
providing a transport vehicle; loading a multi-purpose launcher onto the transport vehicle, wherein the multi-purpose launcher has a base structure, a first multiple missile system and a second multiple missile system; rotating the first multiple missile system with respect to the base structure in a horizontal direction and a vertical direction to aim the first multiple missile system towards a desired target; launching at least one missile from the first multiple missile system; and launching at least one missile from the second multiple missile system in a substantially vertical direction.
- 15. The method of claim 14, and further comprising moving the first multiple missile system from a retracted position to extended position.
- 16. The method of claim 14, and further comprising moving the first multiple missile system from a retracted position to a reloading position, wherein when in the reloading position it is possible to reload missiles into the first multiple missile system.
- 17. The method of claim 14, and further comprising:
removing the second multiple missile system from the multi-purpose launcher; and placing a replenished second multiple missile system into the multi-purpose launcher, wherein the replenished second multiple missile system has at least one missile therein.
- 18. The method of claim 14, and further comprising:
removing missile module from the second multiple missile system; and placing a replenished missile module into the second multiple missile system, wherein the replenished missile module has at least one missile therein.
