Claims
- 1. A folding tool comprising:
(a) a pair of jawlike members, each said jawlike member including an acting portion and a base portion, said jawlike members being connected to each other through a pivot joint located between said acting portion and said base portion of each said jawlike member; (b) a pair of handles, each of said handles defining a respective cavity capable of receiving a portion of one of said jawlike members, each of said handles being pivotally connected to said base portion of a respective one of said jawlike members such that said tool may be configured with said jawlike members deployed with respect to said handles, or in a folded configuration with said jawlike members received in said cavities of said handles; and (c) at least one of said handles including a respective spring pressing upon said base portion of said respective one of said jawlike members to which said at least one of said handles is connected.
- 2. The folding tool of claim 1 wherein said spring urges said respective one of said jawlike members into a deployed position with respect to said at least one of said handles.
- 3. The folding tool of claim 1 wherein said spring retains said respective one of said jawlike members in a deployed position with respect to said at least one of said handles.
- 4. The folding tool of claim 1 wherein said spring resists movement of said respective one of said jawlike members from a deployed position toward said folded configuration.
- 5. The folding tool of claim 1 wherein said base portion upon which said spring presses includes a cam surface.
- 6. The folding tool of claim 5 wherein said cam surface and said spring cooperate to urge said respective one of said jawlike members into a deployed position.
- 7. The folding tool of claim 5 wherein said cam surface and said spring cooperate to urge said respective one of said jawlike members into said respective cavity of said at least one of said handles.
- 8. The folding tool of claim 5 wherein said cam surface and said spring cooperate to urge said at least one handle toward said other one of said pair of handles when said tool is in said folded configuration.
- 9. The folding tool of claim 1 wherein said spring urges said respective one of said jawlike members into said respective cavity of said at least one of said handles.
- 10. The folding tool of claim 1 wherein said spring retains said respective one of said jawlike members in said respective cavity of said at least one of said pair of handles.
- 11. The folding tool of claim 1 wherein said spring resists movement of said respective one of said jawlike members from a position within said respective cavity toward a position outside of said respective cavity.
- 12. The folding tool of claim 1 wherein said spring urges said at least one of said handles toward the other of said pair of handles when said tool is in said folded configuration.
- 13. The folding tool of claim 1 wherein said spring resists movement of said handles away from each other when said tool is in said folded configuration.
- 14. The folding tool of claim 1 wherein said spring retains said at least one handle near the other one of said pair of handles when said tool is in said folded configuration.
- 15. The folding tool of claim 1 wherein said at least one of said handles is elongate and has first and second ends, and wherein said base portion of said respective one of said jawlike members is attached to said at least one of said handles at said first end, and a tool blade is attached to said at least one of said handles at said second end.
- 16. The folding tool of claim 1 wherein each of said pair of handles includes a respective spring and both of said springs urge said handles together when said tool is in said folded configuration.
- 17. The folding tool of claim 16 wherein said springs urge said handles toward each other when said tool approaches said folded configuration.
- 18. The folding tool of claim 16 wherein said springs resist movement of said handles away from each other when said tool is in said folded configuration.
- 19. The folding tool of claim 1 wherein said spring limits movement of said one of said jawlike members with respect to said at least one of said handles.
- 20. The folding tool of claim 1 wherein said spring defines at least a portion of said respective cavity of said at least one of said handles.
- 21. The folding tool of claim 1 wherein said at least one of said handles has a range of movement between a pair of limits with respect to said jawlike member, said spring urging said at least one of said handles toward a respective one of said limits of said range of movement when said at least one of said handles nears either of said limits.
- 22. The folding tool of claim 1 wherein said base portion of said respective one of said jawlike members includes a stop capable of limiting pivoting movement of said at least one of said handles with respect to said respective one of said jawlike members, said spring urging said at least one of said handles toward said stop as said respective one of said jawlike members approaches a deployed position with respect to said one of said pair of handles.
- 23. The folding tool of claim 22 wherein said spring engages said stop when said jawlike member is in said deployed position, thereby preventing further movement of said at least one of said handles with respect to said respective one of said jawlike members once said respective one of said jawlike members has reached said deployed position.
