Claims
- 1. A multi-segment roll package of plastic tape, the package comprising:
a plurality of roll segments wound from a continuous length of the plastic tape and disposed axially about a longitudinal axis of the roll package, said plurality of roll segments comprising;
an outer roll segment comprising a plurality of spiral winding groups, a substantial portion of said plurality of outer spiral winding groups comprising at least one spiral winding of substantially zero helical pitch interrupted by a helical transition winding traversing to an intermediate roll segment comprising a plurality of intermediate spiral winding groups, a substantial portion of said plurality of intermediate spiral winding groups comprising an intermediate spiral winding portion of substantially zero helical pitch interrupted by said helical transition winding to a spooled roll segment comprising a plurality of spool windings of said tape at a predetermined spool pitch, said predetermined spool pitch being greater than zero; wherein a pitch of said helical transition winding is greater than said predetermined spool pitch.
- 2. The roll package of claim 1 wherein said plastic tape comprises a predetermined tape width and an axial length of said spooled roll segment is at least two times said predetermined tape width.
- 3. The roll package of claim 1 wherein a said substantial portion of said plurality of outer spiral winding groups comprise approximately twice a number of windings as said substantial portion of said plurality of intermediate spiral winding groups.
- 4. A method of wrapping a multi-segment roll package of tape, the method comprising the steps of:
wrapping at least one spiral winding of said tape having a predetermined tape width about a longitudinal roll package axis at a first outer roll segment position, said at least one spiral winding defining an end spiral winding group wrapped at substantially zero helical pitch; axially transitioning said tape to an intermediate roll segment position at a first predetermined transition pitch in a first axial direction; wrapping a spiral winding at substantially zero helical pitch about said roll package axis to define an intermediate spiral winding group at an intermediate roll segment position; axially transitioning said tape to a spooled roll segment position in said first axial direction p1 wrapping a layer of spool windings in said first direction about said longitudinal roll package axis at a predetermined spool winding pitch greater than zero to an axial length of at least two times said predetermined tape width; wherein said first predetermined transition pitch is greater than said predetermined spool winding pitch.
- 5. The process of claim 4 comprising the additional step of axially transitioning said tape in said first axial direction to a second intermediate roll segment position and wrapping at least one spiral winding group at substantially zero helical pitch about said roll package longitudinal axis.
- 6. The process of claim 5 comprising the additional step of axially transitioning said tape in said first axial direction to a second outer roll segment position and wrapping at least one spiral winding group at substantially zero helical pitch about said roll package longitudinal axis.
- 7. The process of claim 4 wherein said intermediate spiral winding group comprises approximately one half the windings of said end spiral winding group.
- 8. The method of claim 4 wherein at least two layers of spool windings are wrapped prior to transitioning to said second intermediate roll segment position.
- 9. A multi-segment roll package of plastic tape, the package comprising:
a plurality of roll segments wound from a continuous length of the plastic tape and disposed axially about a longitudinal axis of the roll package, said plurality of roll segments comprising; an outer roll segment comprising an end group having at least one spiral winding of substantially zero helical pitch interrupted by a helical transition winding traversing to an intermediate roll segment comprising an intermediate group having at least one spiral winding of substantially zero helical pitch interrupted by a transition winding to a spooled roll segment comprising a layer of spool windings of said tape at a predetermined spool pitch, said predetermined spool pitch being greater than zero; wherein a pitch of said helical transition winding is greater than said predetermined spool pitch.
- 10. The roll package of claim 10 wherein said end group comprises substantially one half the spiral windings as said intermediate group.
