Claims
- 1. A multi-stage receiver for recovering a traffic signal from at least one received signal supplied by a receiver section, the at least one received signal being associated with a respective multipath path of a sent signal encoded with the traffic signal and travelling through a transmission channel, comprising:for each received signal, a first processing stage connectable to the receiver section, for generating a first estimate of the traffic signal from the respective received signal; for each received signal, a second processing stage connected to the respective first processing stage and connectable to the receiver section, for generating a set of values from the respective first estimate of the traffic signal and from the respective received signal, each said value being indicative of the likelihood of the traffic signal having a corresponding predetermined value; and a final processing stage connected to each second processing stage, for combining the set of values from each second processing stage and generating a second improved estimate of the traffic signal therefrom.
- 2. A multi-stage receiver as claimed in claim 1, wherein each second processing stage comprises means for buffering and delaying the respective received signal to ensure time alignment of the respective first estimate of the traffic signal with the respective received signal.
- 3. A multi-stage receiver as claimed in claim 1, wherein each second processing stage comprises:a signal regenerator connected to the respective first processing stage, for producing an estimate of the sent signal from the respective first estimate of the traffic signal; a channel estimator connected to the signal regenerator and connectable to the receiver section, for estimating a phase of the transmission channel from the estimate of the sent signal and the respective received signal; and a coherent receiver connected to the channel estimator and connectable to the receiver section, for coherently detecting the respective received signal using the estimated phase of the transmission channel and providing said set of values.
- 4. A multi-stage receiver as claimed in claim 3, wherein each channel estimator comprises means for buffering and delaying the respective received signal to ensure time alignment of the respective estimate of the sent signal with the respective received signal.
- 5. A multi-stage receiver as claimed in claim 3, wherein each coherent receiver comprises means for buffering and delaying the respective received signal to ensure time alignment of the respective estimated channel phase with the respective received signal.
- 6. A multi-stage receiver as claimed in claim 1, wherein each first processing stage includes a non-coherent receiver.
- 7. A multi-stage receiver as claimed in claim 1, wherein each first processing stage includes a coherent receiver.
- 8. A multi-stage receiver as claimed in claim 1, wherein said values are energy values.
- 9. A multi-stage receiver as claimed in claim 1, wherein the first processing stage comprises a demodulator for demodulating the respective received signal.
- 10. A multi-stage receiver as claimed in claim 3, wherein the signal regenerator comprises an encoder, a deinterleaver and a mapper connected in series.
- 11. A multi-stage receiver as claimed in claim 10, wherein the signal regenerator comprises a modulator connected to the mapper and wherein the coherent receiver comprises a demodulator for demodulating the respective received signal.
- 12. A multi-stage receiver as claimed in claim 1, wherein the final processing stage comprises a summer, a soft decision data generator, a deinterleaver and a decoder connected in series.
- 13. A multi-stage receiver as claimed in claim 12, wherein the summer is operable to apply a controllable delay to each set of values received from the respective second processing stage.
- 14. A multi-stage receiver for recovering a traffic signal from a plurality of received signals supplied by a receiver section, the received signals being associated with respective multipath paths of a sent signal encoded with the traffic signal and travelling through a transmission channel, comprising:for each received signal, a first processing stage connectable to the receiver section, for generating a first estimate of the traffic signal from the respective received signal; for each received signal, a second processing stage connected to the respective first processing stage and connectable to the receiver section, for generating a second estimate of the traffic signal from the respective first estimate of the traffic signal and from the respective received signal; for each received signal, a third processing stage connected to the respective second processing stage and connectable to the receiver section, for generating a set of values from the respective second estimate of the traffic signal and from the respective received signal, each said value being indicative of the likelihood of the traffic signal having a corresponding predetermined value; and a final processing stage connected to each third processing stage, for combining the set of values from each third processing stage and generating an improved estimate of the traffic signal therefrom.
- 15. A multi-stage receiver as claimed in claim 14, wherein each second processing stage comprises means for feeding the respective second estimate of the traffic signal back to said second processing stage for a controllable number of iterations through said second processing stage.
- 16. A multi-stage receiver for recovering a traffic signal from at least one received signal supplied by a receiver section, the at least one received signal being associated with a respective multipath path of a sent signal encoded with the traffic signal and travelling through a transmission channel, comprising:for each received signal, a first processing stage connectable to the receiver section, for generating a set of values from the respective received signal, each said value being indicative of the likelihood of the traffic signal having a corresponding predetermined value; a common processing stage connected to each first processing stage, for combining the set of values from each first processing stage and generating a first estimate of the traffic signal therefrom; for each received signal, a second processing stage connected to the common processing stage and connectable to the receiver section, for generating a set of values from the first estimate of the traffic signal and from the respective received signal, each said value being indicative of the likelihood of the traffic signal having a corresponding predetermined value; and a final processing stage connected to each one second processing stage, for combining the set of values from each second processing stage and generating a second improved estimate of the traffic signal therefrom.
- 17. A multi-stage receiver as claimed in claim 16, wherein the common processing stage comprises a summer, a decision module and a signal regenerator connected in series.
- 18. A multi-stage receiver as claimed in claim 17, wherein the decision module comprises a soft decision data generator, a deinterleaver and a decoder connected in series.
- 19. A method of recovering a traffic signal from at least one received signal supplied by a receiver section, the at least one received signal being associated with a respective multipath path of a sent signal encoded with the traffic signal and travelling through a transmission channel, comprising:for each received signal, generating a first estimate of the traffic signal from the respective received signal; for each received signal, generating a set of values from the respective first estimate of the traffic signal and from the respective received signal, each said value being indicative of the likelihood of the traffic signal having a corresponding predetermined value; and combining the set of values and generating a second improved estimate of the traffic signal therefrom.
