Claims
- 1. A multi-stroke fastening device for driving fasteners into a workpiece, comprising:
a housing; a fastener drive track carried by said housing; a striker assembly guide track mounted within said housing; a striker assembly mounted in slidable relation within said guide track and including a driver member constructed and arranged to strike a fastener disposed in said fastener drive track, said striker assembly being moved along said guide track through a plurality of alternating drive strokes and return strokes to effect a plurality of impacts of said driver member upon said fastener workpiece; a power drive assembly resiliently coupled to said striker assembly to maintain a predetermined range of distance therebetween, said power drive member being operable to resiliently drive said striker assembly through said plurality of drive strokes in order to drive said fastener into said workpiece; a feed mechanism constructed and arranged to feed successive fasteners into said drive track, each fastener being fed into said drive track after a preceding fastener has received said plurality of impacts and driven into said workpiece.
- 2. A multi-stroke fastening device for driving fasteners into a workpiece, comprising:
a housing; a fastener drive track carried by said housing; a striker assembly guide track mounted within said housing; a striker assembly mounted in slidable relation within said guide track and including a driver member constructed and arranged to strike a fastener disposed in said fastener drive track, said striker assembly being constructed and arranged to be moved along said guide track through a plurality of alternating drive stokes and return strokes to effect a plurality of impacts of said driver member upon said fastener in order to drive said fastener into said workpiece, said striker assembly having substantially constant drive stroke lengths relative to said guide track for said plurality of impacts; a power drive assembly constructed and arranged to drive said striker assembly to effect said plurality of impacts of said driver member upon said fastener; and a feed mechanism constructed and arranged to feed successive fasteners into said drive track to be struck by said striker assembly.
- 3. A fastening device according to claim 2, wherein said drive stroke length of said striker assembly is limited by said guide track.
- 4. A fastening device according to claim 2, wherein said striker assembly is coupled to said power drive assembly and wherein said drive stroke length of said striker assembly is limited by a range of movement of said power drive assembly.
- 5. A multi-stroke fastening device for driving fasteners into a workpiece, comprising:
a housing; a fastener drive track carried by said housing; a striker assembly guide track mounted within said housing; a striker assembly mounted in slidable relation within said guide track and including a driver member constructed and arranged to strike a fastener disposed in said fastener drive track, said striker assembly being constructed and arranged to be moved along said guide track through a plurality of alternating drive stokes and return strokes to effect a plurality of impacts of said driver member upon said fastener in order to drive said fastener into said workpiece, said striker assembly having a drive stroke length which does not progressively increase as the fastener is progressively driven into the workpiece; a power drive assembly constructed and arranged to drive said striker assembly to effect said plurality of impacts of said driver member upon said fastener; and a feed mechanism constructed and arranged to feed successive fasteners into said drive track to be struck by said striker assembly.
- 6. A multi-stroke fastening device for driving fasteners into a workpiece, comprising:
a housing; a striker assembly guide track mounted within said housing; a striker assembly mounted in slidable relation with respect to said guide track and including a driver member constructed and arranged to strike a fastener to be driven into a workpiece, said striker assembly being moveable along said guide track through a plurality of alternating drive strokes and return strokes to effect a plurality of impacts of said driver member upon the fastener; a power drive assembly constructed and arranged to drive said striker assembly through said plurality of alternating drive strokes and return strokes to effect said plurality of impacts of said driver member upon said fastener. a nose assembly carried by said housing and defining a fastener drive track along which said driver travels during said drive strokes and return strokes; a faster head engaging structure constructed and arranged to engage a portion of the head of the fastener to be driven at least during the return stroke; a resilient structure operatively coupled to said fastener head engaging structure, said resilient structure constructed and arranged to permit limited longitudinal movement of said fastener head engaging structure relative to said striker assembly guide track, said resilient structure constructed and arranged to dampen impact of engagement between said fastener head engaging structure and the head of the fastener to be driven.
- 7. A multi-stroke fastening device according to claim 6, wherein said striker assembly comprises a piston and said striker assembly comprises a piston and said striker assembly comprises a cylindrical tubular member, said piston being reciprocal within said cylindrical tubular member to effect said drive strokes and return strokes.
- 8. A multi-stroke fastening device according to claim 7, further comprising a resilient bumper disposed at a forward end of said cylindrical tubular member,
said resilient bumper acting as a shock absorber in the event that said piston contacts said resilient bumper at a forward end of any one of said drive strokes.
- 9. A multi-stroke fastening device according to claim 8, wherein said resilient structure is integrally formed as part of said resilient bumper.
- 10. A multi-stroke fastening device according to claim 9, wherein said resilient bumper and said resilient structure integrally formed therewith are made from a urethane material.
- 11. A multi-stroke fastening device according to claim 6, wherein said fastener head engaging structure is formed as a separate structure from said nose assembly.
- 12. A multi-stroke fastening device according to claim 6, further comprising a feed mechanism constructed and arranged to feed successive fasteners into said drive track, each fastener being fed into said drive track after a preceding fastener has received said plurality of impacts and driven into said workplace.
- 13. A multi-stroke fastening device according to claim 6, wherein said power drive assembly is powered by a rechargeable battery.
- 14. A multi-stroke fastening device according to claim 6, wherein said fastener head engaging structure engages said portion of the fastener head during said drive stroke as well as said return stroke.
- 15. A multi-stroke fastening device according to claim 6, wherein said fastener head engaging structure maintains said striker assembly guide track in spaced relation to the head of the fastener to be driven.
- 16. A multi-stroke fastening device for driving fasteners into a workpiece, comprising:
a housing; a nose assembly carried by the housing and defining a drive track; a fastener feed mechanism including a fastener feed pawl that moves successive fasteners into said drive track; a cylinder guide track mounted within the housing, said cylinder guide track having a forward end and a rearward end; a driver assembly disposed in slidably sealed relation with said cylinder guide track, said driver assembly movable forwardly through said cylinder drive track during a fastener impacting drive stroke thereof and movable rearwardly through said cylinder guide track during a return stroke thereof, said driver assembly including a driver member movable through said drive track during alternating fastener impacting drive strokes and return strokes to impart a plurality of impacts upon a fastener to be driven into the workpiece so as to drive the fastener into the workpiece; a piston disposed in slidably sealed relation with said cylinder guide track, said piston being rearwardly spaced from said driver assembly, an air space being disposed between said piston and said driver assembly; a motor operatively connected with said piston and constructed and arranged to drive said piston forwardly and rearwardly through said cylinder guide track to effect said alternating fastener impacting drive strokes and return strokes, wherein movement of said piston forwardly through said cylinder guide track compresses air within said air space so as to force said driver assembly forwardly through said cylinder guide track to effect said fastener impacting drive stroke so that said driver member impacts said fastener to be driven.
- 17. A multi-stroke fastening device according to claim 16, wherein after each said drive stroke said motor moves said piston rearwardly during said return stroke so as to create a negative pressure within said air space thereby causing said driver assembly to be pulled rearwardly through said cylinder guide track away from said fastener to be driven.
