Claims
- 1. A filter assembly comprising
- a vacuum manifold having a base and removable cover,
- a chamber in the vacuum manifold,
- a passage in the manifold communicating with the chamber for applying a reduced pressure to the chamber,
- a multi-well filter strip having a plurality of wells, each of the wells having side walls and open top and bottom ends, each of the wells further having a separate filter membrane attached to a bottom surface of the side walls and closing the open bottom end of each well of the strip,
- means provided on the outside of the cover for supporting the strip and for supporting each membrane adjacent the bottom ends of the respective wells to maintain the membrane attachment to the well when a vacuum is applied to the chamber, and
- means defining openings in the cover for placing each membrane in communication with the chamber whereby a reduced pressure applied to the chamber will draw liquid in the wells through the membranes into the chamber.
- 2. A filter assembly as defined in claim 1 wherein
- the supporting means provided on the cover comprises a plurality of individual recesses each receiving the bottom end of a respective well of the filter strip, each recess having a bottom wall with a peripheral shoulder portion for supporting the respective membrane, and
- said openings in the cover extend from each recess into the chamber.
- 3. A filter assembly as defined in claim 2 wherein
- the bottom wall of each recess has a central funnel-shaped portion which is surrounded by the shoulder portion,
- the shoulder portion of each recess forming a seal with the bottom end of each respective well.
- 4. A filter assembly as defined in claim 3 further comprising
- a second multi-well strip disposed in the chamber and having a plurality of wells with side walls, open tops and closed bottoms, the second strip being positioned such that each well in the second strip receives the filtrate from a separate respective well in the filter strip.
- 5. A filter assembly as defined in claim 4 wherein
- the supporting means provided on the cover includes nozzle means extending downwardly from each opening which prevents the intermixing of filtrate passing from the well in the filter strip through the membrane to the respective well in the second strip.
- 6. A filter assembly as defined in claim 5 wherein
- frangible webs connect the separate wells of the filter strip enabling the wells to be easily separated from one another.
- 7. A filter assembly as defined in claim 1 wherein
- the supporting means provided on the cover includes nozzle means extending downwardly from each opening which prevents the intermixing of filtrate passing from each well through the respective membrane to the chamber.
- 8. A filter assembly as defined in claim 1 further comprising
- a second multi-well strip disposed in the chamber and having a plurality of wells with side walls, open tops and closed bottoms, the second strip being positioned such that each well in the second strip receives the filtrate from a separate respective well in the filter strip.
- 9. A filter assembly as defined in claim 8 wherein
- the chamber comprises a bottom wall and a surrounding side wall,
- a trough is formed in the bottom wall for receiving the second multi-well strip in alignment with the multi-well filter strip on the cover, and
- said passage being connected to the chamber in the trough.
- 10. A filter assembly as defined in claim 9 wherein
- said trough includes a bottom and side walls and said passage enters the trough through the trough side wall, and
- said passage diminishes smoothly in cross-section away from the side wall to reduce spatter of the filtrate flowing from the chamber.
- 11. A filter assembly as defined in claim 9 wherein
- said passage diminishes smoothly in cross-section away from the through to reduce spatter of the filtrate flowing from the chamber.
- 12. A filter assembly as defined in claim 1 wherein
- a vacuum control device is provided in the vacuum manifold for limiting the reduced pressure applied to the chamber.
- 13. A filter assembly as defined in claim 1 wherein
- frangible webs connect the separate wells of the filter strip enabling the wells to be easily separated from one another.
- 14. A filter assembly as defined in claim 1 wherein
- the passage in the manifold is provided in the base and is connected to the bottom of the chamber so as to remove all filtrate drawn into the chamber and not separately contained within the chamber.
- 15. A filter assembly as defined in claim 14 wherein
- said passage diminishes smoothly in cross-section away from a side wall of the chamber to reduce spatter of the filtrate flowing from the chamber.
