Claims
- 1. A dielectric induction logging tool operating in the frequency range of 1 MHz to 200 MHz comprising:
- (a) an elongate fluid tight sonde having:
- (1) an external housing having a specified resistivity and comprising a moldable material, said moldable material being generally non-conductive but having a plurality of conductive fibers dispersed therein to enable current flow in said fibers and rendering said housing conductive;
- (2) an elongate central mandrel in said housing for supporting plural generally toroidally shaped coils wound thereabout;
- (3) spaced conductive disks along said housing extending interiorly toward said mandrel and comprising similar moldable conductive material having a specified resistivity as said housing; and
- (4) said external housing and said disks cooperatively limiting electromagnetic field propagation by absorption of electromagnetic energy along said sonde housing so that external dipole fields are suppressed;
- (b) a plurality of multiple turn antenna coils supported on said mandrel in an annular space between said mandrel and said housing and spaced along said housing;
- (c) transmitter means connected to at least one of said coils to function as a transmitter antenna; and
- (d) receiver means connected to at least one of said coils to function as a receiver antenna responsive to signals transmitted by said transmitter antenna,
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein at least two of said coils are connected to said transmitter means and are arranged relative to said receiver antenna to transmit upwardly through adjacent earth formations to said receiver antenna and also downwardly through adjacent earth formations to said receiver antenna.
- 3. The structure of claim 1 wherein said coils comprise plural turns of coaxially shielded conductor loops wherein said coaxial shielding has selected gaps therein.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said transmitter antenna includes a multiple turn coil formed of shielded coaxial cable having a grounding bar along the shielding and extending across multiple turns thereof.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein said multiple turn antenna coil connects through a transformer for signal transfer.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein said coil is positioned within said housing and first and second radially directed disks are above and below said transmitter antenna coil.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein materials having a bulk resistivity in the range of about 0.01 to about 1 ohm-meters are used in the fabrication of said disks.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein materials having a bulk resistivity in the range of about 0.01 to about 1 ohm-meters are used in the fabrication of said external housing.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein said disks are made of materials having a bulk resistivity of 0.01 to about 1 ohm-meters.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein said external housing is formed of woven glass fiber impregnated with a resin material and fibers in said woven material are formed of conductive fibrous material.
