Claims
- 1. Composition of matter comprising reaction product of:
- (i) (a) degraded ethylene-alpha-olefin copolymer obtained by degrading undegraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer, said undegraded copolymer comprising intramolecularly heterogeneous copolymer chains containing at least one crystallizable segment of methylene units having a number average molecular weight of at least 700 and at least one low crystallinity ethylene-alpha-olefin copolymer segment, wherein said at least one crystallizable segment comprises at least about 10 weight percent of said copolymer chain and contains at least about 57 weight percent ethylene, wherein said low crystallinity segment contains not greater than about 53 weight percent ethylene, and wherein said copolymer has a molecular weight distribution characterized by at least one of a ratio of M.sub.w /M.sub.n of less than 2 and a ratio of M.sub.z /M.sub.w of less than 1.8, and wherein at least two portions of an individual intramolecularly heterogeneous chain, each portion comprising at least 5 weight percent of said chain, differ in composition from one another by at least 7 weight percent ethylene; said degraded copolymer grafted with (b) at least one ethylenically monounsaturated carboxylic acid material selected from the group consisting of carboxylic acids having 1 to 2 carboxylic acid groups, anhydride derivatives of said carboxylic acids and ester derivatives of said carboxylic acids to form grated ethylene copolymer; and
- (ii) at least on polyamine containing one primary amino group and at least one secondary amino group.
- 2. The composition of matter according to claim 1 wherein said degrading comprises mechanical degradation.
- 3. The composition of matter according to claim 2 wherein said mechanical degradation comprises shear assisted oxidative degradation.
- 4. The composition of matter according to claim 2 wherein said mechanical degradation comprises shear assisted degradation carried out in an inert atmosphere.
- 5. The composition of matter according to claim 3 wherein said shear assisted oxidative degradation is carried out in the presence of catalysts.
- 6. The composition of matter according to claim 4 wherein said shear assisted degradation is carried out in the presence of catalyst.
- 7. The composition of matter according to claim 1 wherein said polyamine contains 1 primary amino group, from to about 6 secondary amino groups, and from about 7 to about 80 carbon atoms.
- 8. The composition of matter according to claim 7 wherein said polyamine further contains sulfur or oxygen atom.
- 9. The composition of matter according to claim 1 wherein said polyamine is represented by the formula
- H.sub.2 N(R.sup.1 --NH).sub.z (R.sup.2 --A).sub.y R.sup.3
- wherein:
- R.sup.1 is hydrocarbylene containing from 1 to about 6 carbons;
- R.sup.2 is hydrocarbylene containing from 1 to about 6 carbons;
- R.sup.3 is hydrocarbyl containing from 1 to about 40 carbons;
- A is oxygen;
- y is one; and
- z has a value of from 1 to 6.
- 10. The composition of matter according to claim 9 wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are alkylene and R.sup.3 is alkyl.
- 11. The composition of matter according to claim 10 wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are independently alkylene containing from 2 to 4 carbon atoms and R.sup.3 is alkyl containing from about 5 to about 30 carbons.
- 12. The composition of matter according to claim 9 wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are propylene, and R.sup.3 is alkyl containing from about 10 to about 20 carbon atoms.
- 13. The composition of matter according to claim 1 wherein said monounsaturated carboxylic acid material (i)(b) is selected from the group consisting of C.sub.4 to C.sub.10 monounsaturated dicarboxylic acid material, C.sub.3 to C.sub.10 monounsaturated monocarboxylic acid material, and mixtures thereof.
- 14. The composition of matter according to claim 13 wherein said monounsaturated carboxylic acid material (i)(b) comprises monounsaturated C.sub.13 to C.sub.10 monocarboxylic acid.
- 15. The composition of matter according to claim 13 wherein said monounsaturated carboxylic acid material (i)(b) comprises C.sub.4 to C.sub.10 monounsaturated dicarboxylic acid material.
- 16. The composition of matter according to claim 15 wherein said C.sub.4 to C.sub.10 monounsaturated dicarboxylic acid material is selected from the group consisting of maleic anhydride, maleic acid, and mixtures thereof.
- 17. The composition of matter according to claim 16 wherein said C.sub.4 to C.sub.10 monounsaturated dicarboxylic acid material is maleic anhydride.
- 18. The composition of matter according to claim 1 wherein said undegraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer has an intermolecular compositional dispersity such that 95 weight % of said copolymer chains have a composition 15 weight % or less different from said average ethylene composition.
- 19. The composition of matter according to claim 18 wherein said intermolecular compositional dispersity of said undegraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer is such that 95 weight % of said copolymer chains have a composition 10 wt. % or less different from said average ethylene composition.
- 20. The composition of matter according to claim 1 wherein said low crystallinity segment of said undegraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer comprises from about 20 to 53 wt. % ethylene.
- 21. The composition of matter according to claim 20 wherein said crystallizable segment comprises at least about 57 wt. % ethylene.
- 22. The composition of matter according to claim 21 wherein said degraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer is characterized by a number-average molecular weight of from about 15,000 to about 250,000.
- 23. The composition of matter according to claim 21 wherein said low crystallinity segment of said undegraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer comprises from about 30 to 50 weight % ethylene.
- 24. The composition of matter according to claim 1 wherein said undegraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer has a MWD characterized by at least one of a ratio of M.sub.w /M.sub.n of less than about 1.5 and a ratio of M.sub.z /M.sub.w of less than about 1.5.
- 25. The composition of matter according to claim 24 wherein said undegraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer has a MWD characterized by at least one of a ratio of M.sub.w /M.sub.n of less than about 1.25 and a ratio of M.sub.z /M.sub.w of less than about 1.2.
- 26. The composition of matter according to claim 24 wherein said intermolecular compositional dispersity of said undegraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer is such that 95 weight % of said copolymer chains have a composition 13 weight % or less different from said average ethylene composition.
- 27. The composition of matter according to claim 1 wherein said undegraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer has a total minimum ethylene content of about 20% on a weight basis.
- 28. The composition of matter according to claim 1 wherein said undegraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer comprises chain segment sequences Characterized by at least one of the structures:
- M--T (I)
- T.sup.1 --(M--R.sup.2).sub.x (II)
- T.sup.1 --(M.sup.1 --T.sup.2).sub.y p13 M.sup.2 (III)
- wherein x and y are each integers of 1 to 3, M comprises said crystallizable segment, T comprises said low crystallinity segment, M.sup.1 and M.sup.2 are the same or different and each comprises an M segment, and T.sup.1 and T.sup.2 are the same or different and each comprises a T segment.
- 29. The composition of matter according to claim 28 wherein said copolymer chain segment sequences are characterized by structure I.
- 30. The composition of matter according to claim 28 wherein said chain segment sequences are characterized by structure II.
- 31. The composition of matter according to claim 30 wherein x is one.
- 32. The composition of matter according to claim 31 wherein in said chain segment sequences said T.sup.1 and T.sup.2 segments are of substantially the same weight-average molecular weight.
- 33. The composition of matter according to claim 32 wherein in said chain segment sequences the sum of the weight average molecular weights of said T.sup.1 and T.sup.2 segments is substantially equal to the weight-average molecular weight of said M segment.
- 34. The composition of matter according to claim 31 wherein said undegraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer has a MWD characterized by at least one of a ratio of M.sub.w /M.sub.n of less than about 1.5 and a ratio of M.sub.z /M.sub.w of less than about 1.5.
- 35. The composition of matter according to claim 34 wherein said undegraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer has a MWD characterized by at least one of a ratio of M.sub.w /M.sub.n of less than about 1.25 and a ratio of M.sub.z /M.sub.w of less than about 1.2.
- 36. Composition of matter comprising reaction product of:
- (i) (a) mechanical degraded ethylene-alpha-olefin copolymer obtained by degrading undegraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer, said undegraded copolymer comprising intramolecularly heterogeneous copolymer chains containing at least one crystallizable segment of methylene units having a number average molecular weight of at least 700 and at least one low crystallinity ethylene-alpha-olefin copolymer segment, wherein said at least one crystallizable segment comprises at least about 10 weight percent of said copolymer chain and contains at least about 57 weight percent ethylene, wherein said low crystallinity segment contains not greater than about 53 weight percent ethylene, and wherein said copolymer has a molecular weight distribution characterized by at least one of a ratio of M.sub.w /M.sub.n of less than 2 and a ratio of M.sub.z /M.sub.w of less than 1.8, and wherein at least two portions of an individual intramolecularly heterogeneous chain, each portion comprising at least 5 weight percent of said chain, differ in composition from one another by at least 7 weight percent ethylene, and wherein the chain segment sequences is characterized by the structure
- T'--(M--T.sup.2).sub.x;
- said degraded copolymer grafted with (b) at least one C.sub.4 to C.sub.10 ethylenically monounsaturated dicarboxylic acid material selected from the group consisting of carboxylic acids, anhydride derivatives of said carboxylic acids and ester derivatives of said carboxylic acids to form grafted ethylene copolymer; and
- (ii) at least one polyamine containing one primary amino group and at least one secondary amino group represented by the formula
- H.sub.2 N(R.sup.1 --NH).sub.z (R.sup.2 --A).sub.y R.sup.3
- wherein:
- R.sup.1 is hydrocarbylene containing from 1 to about 6 carbons;
- R.sup.2 is hydrocarbylene containing from 1 to about 6 carbons;
- R.sup.3 is hydrocarbyl containing from 1 to about 40 carbons;
- A is oxygen;
- y is one; and
- z has a value of from 1 to 6.
- 37. The composition of matter according to claim 36 wherein said mechanical degradation comprises shear assisted oxidative degradation.
- 38. The composition of matter according to claim 37 wherein said mechanical degradation comprises shear assisted degradation carried out in an inert atmosphere.
- 39. The composition of matter according to claim 39 wherein said shear assisted oxidative degradation is carried out in the presence of catalysts.
- 40. The composition of matter according to claim 39 wherein said shear assisted degradation is carried out in the presence of catalyst.
- 41. The composition of matter according to claim 36 wherein said polyamine contains 1 primary amino group, from 1 to about 6 secondary amino groups, and from about 7 to about 80 carbon atoms.
- 42. The composition of matter according to claim 36 wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are alkylene and R.sup.3 is alkyl.
- 43. The composition of matter according to claim 42 wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are independently alkylene containing from 2 to 4 carbon atoms and R.sup.3 is alkyl containing from about 5 to about 30 carbons.
- 44. The composition of matter according to claim 36 wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are propylene, and R.sup.3 is alkyl containing from about 10 to about 20 carbon atoms.
- 45. The composition of matter according to claim 36 wherein said monounsaturated carboxylic acid material (i) (b) contains two anhydride groups.
- 46. The composition of matter according to claim 36 wherein said C.sub.4 to C.sub.10 monounsaturated dicarboxylic acid material is selected from the group consisting of maleic anhydride, maleic acid, and mixtures thereof.
- 47. The composition of matter according to claim 46 wherein said C.sub.4 to C.sub.10 monounsaturated dicarboxylic acid material is maleic anhydride.
- 48. The composition of matter according to claim 36 wherein said undegraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer has an intermolecular compositional dispersity such that 95 weight percent of said copolymer chains have a composition 15 weight percent or less different from said average ethylene composition.
- 49. The composition of matter according to claim 48 wherein said intermolecular compositional dispersity of said undegraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer is such that 95 weight percent of said copolymer chains have a composition 10 weight percent or less different from said average ethylene composition.
- 50. The composition of matter according to claim 36 wherein said low crystallinity segment of said undegraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer comprises from about 20 to 53 weight percent ethylene.
- 51. The composition of matter according to claim 50 wherein said crystallizable segment comprises at least about 57 weight percent ethylene.
- 52. The composition of matter according to claim 51 wherein said degraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer is characterized by a number-average molecular weight of from about 15,000 to about 250,000.
- 53. The composition of matter according to claim 36 wherein said undegraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer has a MWD characterized by at least one of a ratio of M.sub.w /M.sub.n of less than about 1.5 and a ratio of M.sub.z /M.sub.w of less than about 1.5.
- 54. The composition of matter according to claim 53 wherein said undegraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer has a MWD characterized by at least one of a ratio of M.sub.w /M.sub.n of less than about 1.25 and a ratio of M.sub.z /M.sub.w of less than about 1.2.
- 55. The composition of matter according to claim 53 wherein said intermolecular compositional dispersity of said undegraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer is such that 95 weight percent of said copolymer chains have a composition 13 weight percent or less different from said average ethylene composition.
- 56. The composition of matter according to claim 51 wherein said low crystallinity segment of said undegraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer comprises from about 30 to 50 weight percent ethylene.
- 57. The composition of matter according to claim 36 wherein said undegraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer has a total minimum ethylene content of about 20 percent on a weight basis.
- 58. The composition of matter according to claim 36 wherein said chain segment sequences said T.sup.1 and T.sup.2 segments are of substantially the same weight-average molecular weight.
- 59. The composition of matter according to claim 58 wherein said chain segment sequences the sum of the weight average molecular weights of said T.sup.1 and T.sup.2 segments is substantially equal to the weight-average molecular weight of said M segment.
- 60. The composition of matter according to claim 58 wherein said undegraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer has a MWD characterized by at least one of a ratio of M.sub.w /M.sub.n of less than about 1.5 and a ratio of M.sub.z /M.sub.w of less than about 1.5.
- 61. The composition of matter according to claim 60 wherein said undegraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer has a MWD characterized by at least one of a ratio of M.sub.w /M.sub.n of less than about 1.25 and a ratio of M.sub.z /M.sub.w of less than about 1.2.
