Claims
- 1. A process for preparing a cation exchange membrane from fluorinated polymers having sulfonic or carboxylic ion exchange groups and having at least one fluorine atom on a carbon atom adjacent to each ion exchange group, said membrane having three adhered layers which are, in turn,
- (a) a first layer consisting essentially of fluorinated polymer having sulfonic ion exchange groups,
- (b) a second layer adhered to the first layer consisting essentially of fluorinated polymer having carboxylic ion exchange groups, and
- (c) a third layer adhered to the second layer, having a thickness of less than 25 microns and consisting essentially of fluorinated polymer with carboxylic ion exchange groups and having an ion exchange capacity of at least 0.1 milliquivalent/gram of dry resin greater than that of the fluorinated polymer of the second layer.
- which process comprises coating, onto layer (b) of a two-layer membrane of layers (a) an (b), a solution or non-aqueous dispersion of the polymer used in layer (c), drying said coating and hot pressing the resulting membrane to adhere layer (c) to layer (b).
