Claims
- 1. A substrate labeled with a composite material, comprising:(a) a fired ceramic body comprising a base layer, said base layer including: (i) a first glassy phase; and (ii) a first refractory phase interspersed with said first glassy phase, said first glassy phase being capable of wetting a substrate at an application temperature; wherein based on the amount of first refractory phase in the base layer, the base layer exhibits dimensional and structural integrity at application temperature and wherein base layer is attached to the substrate; and (b) a top layer provided on said fired ceramic body, wherein said top layer consists essentially of a refractory material selected from the group consisting of a metal, an intermetallic material, a metal alloy, and combinations thereof, wherein there is sufficient color contrast between said top layer and said fired ceramic body such that a code pattern is optically discernible, and wherein said composite material includes said code pattern.
- 2. The substrate of claim 1, wherein said code pattern comprises a bar code pattern.
- 3. The substrate of claim 1, wherein the application temperature is a temperature in the range from about 400° C. to about 1000° C.
- 4. The substrate of claim 1, wherein the first refractory phase is present in the base layer in an amount of at least 40 volume percent.
- 5. The substrate of claim 1 wherein the first glass phase is present in the base layer in an amount in the range from 10 to 60 volume percent, and the first refractory phase is present in an amount in the range from about 40 to 90 volume percent.
- 6. The substrate of claim 1 wherein the first glassy phase is present in the base layer in an amount in the range from 30 to 50 volume percent, and the first refractory phase is present in an amount in the range from about 50 to 70 volume percent.
