Claims
- 1. An optical data storage system comprising:
- a medium receptor for receiving an optical data storage medium having a plurality of separate data surfaces located at different depths in the medium;
- a radiation source for producing a radiation beam;
- a surface identifying device for identifying the number of data surfaces present in the medium;
- a focus device for focusing the radiation beam to a selected one of the plurality of data surfaces of the medium; and
- an optical receptor for receiving a return radiation beam from the medium and generating a data signal responsive thereto.
- 2. The system of claim 1, wherein one of the data surfaces contains recorded information representing the number of data surfaces present in the optical data storage medium.
- 3. The system of claim 2, wherein the recorded information is recorded in the header region of one of the data surfaces.
- 4. The system of claim 1, wherein the surface identifying device comprises a controller electrically coupled to the focus device.
- 5. The system of claim 4, wherein the controller is preprogrammed with a number representing the number of data surfaces present in the optical data storage medium.
- 6. The system of claim 5, wherein one of the data surfaces contains recorded header information representing the number of data surfaces present in the optical data storage medium, and wherein the controller is responsive to a data signal corresponding to the header information read by the optical receptor.
- 7. The system of claim 1, wherein the focus device comprises a lens connected to a linear movement motor.
- 8. The system of claim 1, wherein the radiation source is a laser.
- 9. The system of claim 1, further comprising an optical data storage medium having a plurality of separate data surfaces located at different depths in the medium.
- 10. An optical data storage system comprising:
- a spindle motor for receiving an optical data storage disk, the disk having a plurality of separate data surfaces located at different depths in the disk;
- a laser for producing a light beam;
- a surface identifying device for identifying the number of data surfaces present in the disk;
- a beam movement device for directing the light beam to a selected radial position on the disk;
- a focus device for focusing the light beam to a selected one of the plurality of data surfaces of the disk; and
- an optical receptor for receiving a return light beam from the disk and generating a data signal responsive thereto.
- 11. The system of claim 10, wherein one of the data surfaces contains recorded information representing the number of data surfaces present in the optical data storage disk.
- 12. The system of claim 11, wherein the recorded information is recorded in the header region of one of the data surfaces.
- 13. The system of claim 10, wherein the surface identifying device comprises a controller electrically coupled to the focus device.
- 14. The system of claim 13, wherein the controller is preprogrammed with a number representing the number of data surfaces present in the optical data storage disk.
- 15. The system of claim 14, wherein one of the data surfaces contains recorded header information representing the number of data surfaces present in the optical data storage disk and wherein the controller is responsive to a data signal corresponding to the header information read by the optical receptor.
- 16. The system of claim 10, wherein the focus device comprises a lens connected to a linear movement motor.
- 17. The system of claim 10, further comprising an optical data storage disk having a plurality of separate data surfaces located at different depths in the disk.
- 18. An optical data storage system comprising:
- a spindle motor for receiving an optical data storage disk, the disk having a plurality of separate data surfaces located at different depths in the disk and having recorded information representing the number of data surfaces in the disk;
- a laser for producing a light beam;
- a beam movement device for directing the light beam to a selected radial position on the disk;
- a focus device for focusing the light beam to a selected one of the plurality of data surfaces of the disk;
- an optical receptor for receiving a return light beam from the disk and generating a data signal responsive thereto; and
- a disk drive controller connected to the optical receptor and the focus device for determining the number of data surfaces on the disk and controlling the focus device.
- 19. The system of claim 18, wherein the recorded information is recorded in the header region of one of the data surfaces.
- 20. The system of claim 18, wherein the controller is preprogrammed with a number representing the number of data surfaces present in the optical disk.
- 21. The system of claim 18, wherein the focus device comprises a lens connected to a linear movement motor.
- 22. The system of claim 18 further comprising an optical data storage disk having a plurality of separate data surfaces located at different depths in the disk.
