Claims
- 1. An optical data storage system comprising:
- an electromagnetic radiation source for producing an electromagnetic radiation beam;
- an optical medium having a plurality of data surfaces;
- a focus device for focussing the electromagnetic radiation beam to a selected one of the data surfaces;
- an optical detector for receiving a return electromagnetic radiation beam from the medium and generating a focus error signal responsive thereto; and
- a focus control device connected to the focus device, the focus control device comprising a peak detector for detecting a peak in the focus error signal and a controller for counting the peaks detected by the peak detector and determining the data surface on which the electromagnetic radiation beam is focused.
- 2. The system of claim 1, wherein the optical detector is a segmented optical detector.
- 3. The system of claim 2, wherein the segmented optical detector is comprised of at least four segments.
- 4. The system of claim 1, wherein the optical detector is comprised of four segments which are segmented by two intersecting boundary lines into four quadrants, the focus error signal being generated by summing the output signal from each diagonally opposed quadrant pair and then subtracting the two sums from each other.
- 5. The system of claim 1, wherein the focus device comprises a lens connected to a linear movement device which moves the lens in a direction substantially perpendicular to the data surfaces.
- 6. The system of claim 1, wherein the detection of two peaks in the focus error signal designates the location of a data surface.
- 7. The system of claim 6, wherein the focus control device controls the focus device such that the focus error signal maintains a zero point between the two peaks.
- 8. The system of claim 1, wherein the optical medium is a disk and the system further comprises a rotation device for rotating the disk.
- 9. The system of claim 1, wherein the optical medium contains information identifying the number of data layers present in the medium.
- 10. An optical data storage system comprising:
- a laser for producing a light beam;
- an optical disk medium having a plurality of data surfaces;
- a rotation device connected to the disk medium for rotating the disk medium;
- a focus device for focussing the light beam to a selected one of the data surfaces;
- an optical detector for receiving a return light beam from the medium and generating a focus error signal responsive thereto; and
- a focus control device connected to the focus device, the focus control device comprising a peak detector for detecting a peak in the focus error signal and a controller for counting the peaks detected by the peak detector and determining the data surface on which the light beam is focussed.
- 11. The system of claim 10, wherein the optical detector is a segmented optical detector.
- 12. The system of claim 11, wherein the segmented optical detector is comprised of at least four segments.
- 13. The system of claim 10, wherein the optical detector is comprised of four segments which are segmented by two intersecting boundary lines into four quadrants, the focus error signal being generated by summing the output signal from each diagonally opposed quadrant pair and then subtracting the two sums from each other.
- 14. The system of claim 10, wherein the focus device comprises a lens connected to a linear movement device which moves the lens in a direction substantially perpendicular to the data surfaces.
- 15. The system of claim 10, wherein the detection of two peaks in the focus error signal designates the location of a data surface.
- 16. The system of claim 15, wherein the focus control device controls the focus device such that the focus error signal maintains a zero point between the two peaks.
- 17. The system of claim 10, wherein the optical medium contains information identifying the number of data layers present in the medium.
