Claims
- 1. An interactive video workstation for processing video images comprising:
- a plurality of display units for displaying video images, including at least a first display unit for displaying textual information, a second display unit for displaying graphic information and a third display unit for displaying control information, wherein each of the display units has a substantially planar display surface;
- a coordinate sensing means having a single transparent energized conductive surface with a front surface and a back surface, a stylus and a coordinate calculation means, wherein the stylus and single conductive surface are each connected to the calculation means and wherein the calculation means calculates the coordinate position of the stylus with respect to the single conductive surface, and wherein the plurality of video display units are positioned in proximity to the back surface of the single conductive surface wherein the single conductive surface substantially overlays the entire surface area of each of the display surfaces of the plurality of display units;
- function symbols mechanically affixed to the single conductive surface adjacent to one or more of the video display units, wherein each of the function symbols is associated with a particular video image processing function of the workstation; and
- control means connected to each of the display units and to the coordinate sensing means for controlling each of the display units, wherein the control means is responsive to the position of the stylus with respect to the single conductive surface and wherein the control means is further responsive to the coordinate calculation means of the coordinate sensing means when the stylus is positioned near any of the function symbols, wherein the video images displayed on the plurality of display units are controlled by the position of the stylus with respect to one or more of the plurality of display units and/or function symbols, and wherein the textual information displayed on the first display unit corresponds to the graphic information displayed on the second display unit.
- 2. The workstation of claim 1 further comprising data communication means responsive to the control means, wherein the data communication means transmits image data derived from the image displayed on one of the plurality of display units to a communication network.
- 3. The workstation of claim 1 further comprising mechanical adjustment means for altering the height and orientation of the plurality of display units.
- 4. A workstation comprising:
- a plurality of video display units for displaying image data, including at least a first display unit for displaying textural information, a second display unit for displaying graphic information and a third display unit for displaying control information, wherein each of the display units has a substantially planar display surface;
- a coordinate sensing means having a single transparent energized conductive surface with a front surface and a back surface, a stylus and a coordinate calculation mode, wherein the stylus and single conductive surface are each connected to the calculation means and wherein the calculation means calculates the coordinate position of the stylus with respect to the single conductive surface, and wherein the plurality of video display units are positioned in proximity to the back surface of the single energized conductive surface wherein the single conductive surface substantially overlays the entire surface area of each of the display surfaces of the plurality of display units; and
- control means connected to the coordinate calculation means for controlling the image data displayed on the plurality of video display units, wherein the control means is responsive to the coordinate calculation means of the coordinate sensing means, and wherein the image data displayed on the video display units is dependent upon the coordinate position of the stylus with respect to the single conductive surface, and wherein in response to positioning the stylus over the control information displayed on the third display unit the control means displays textual information on the first display unit and graphic information on the second display unit.
- 5. The workstation of claim 4 further comprising a plurality of function symbols mechanically affixed to the single energized conductive surface, wherein the control means is further responsive to the coordinate calculation means of the coordinate sensing means when the stylus is positioned near any of the plurality of function symbols.
- 6. The workstation of claim 4 further comprising:
- height adjustment means for adjusting the vertical position of the single energized conductive surface; and
- angular adjustment means for adjusting the angular position of the single energized conductive surface with respect to a horizontal reference plane.
- 7. The workstation of claim 4 further comprising communication means responsive to the control means for communicating to a communication network data derivative from the image data displayed on at least one of the plurality of video display units.
- 8. The workstation of claim 4 wherein image data are displayed on one of the plurality of video display units and wherein certain of the displayed image data are altered in response to the stylus being directed towards those certain displayed image data.
- 9. The workstation of claim 4 wherein the image data displayed on one of the display units is controlled by directing the stylus towards preselected portions of the image data displayed on another of the display units.
- 10. A workstation system comprising a first workstation and a second workstation wherein each of the first and second workstations are substantially as described in claim 7, and wherein each of the first and second workstations are connected to the same communication network.
- 11. The workstation system as claimed in claim 10 wherein the control means of the second workstation is responsive to the control means of the first workstation.
- 12. The workstation system as claimed in claim 1 wherein the image displayed on one of the video display units of the first workstation is substantially the same as the image displayed on one of the video display units of the second workstation.
- 13. The workstation system as claimed in claim 12 wherein the image displayed on one of the video display units of the first workstation is altered in response to the stylus of the coordinate sensing means of the first workstation and wherein the image displayed on one of the video display units of the second workstation is altered in substantial synchronization with the altering of the image displayed on one of the video display units of the first workstation.
- 14. The workstation system as claimed in claim 11 wherein the control means of each of the first and second workstations comprise storage means for storing image data, wherein the storage means each having a first portion and a second portion, wherein the control means of the first workstation is responsive to the first portion of the storage means of the control means of the second workstation and is not responsive to the second portion of the storage means of the control means of the second workstation.
