Claims
- 1. A display device utilizing gas discharge, said display device comprising a pair of insulating substrates spaced from each other and in substantially parallel relation, each of said substrates having an inside surface facing that of the other and at least one of said substrates being transparent; a first group of electrodes positioned in rows on the inside surface of one of the substrates; a second group of electrodes positioned in columns on the inside surface of the other of the substrates, the first and second groups of electrodes being positioned transverse relative to each other; a first dielectric layer covering the first group of electrodes and a second dielectric layer covering the second group of electrodes; said first and second dielectric layers being of a material having heavy metallic elements therein; and a first protection layer formed on the first dielectric layer and a second protection layer formed on the second dielectric layer for preventing sputtering, said insulating substrates being positioned relative to each other in a manner whereby they are oppositely placed with a discharge gap between them, said discharge gap being filled with gas capable of ionization and each cross point of an electrode of the first group of electrodes and an electrode of the second group of electrodes being a discharge point for display.
- 2. A display device as claimed in claim 1, wherein each of the protection layers comprises silicon dioxide.
- 3. A display device utilizing gas discharge, said display device comprising a pair of insulating substrates spaced from each other and in substantially parallel relation, each of said substrates having an inside surface facing that of the other and at least one of said substrates being transparent; a first group of electrodes positioned in rows on the inside surface of one of the substrates; a second group of electrodes positioned in columns on the inside surface of the other of the substrates, the first and second groups of electrodes being positioned transverse relative to each other; a first dielectric layer covering the first group of electrodes and a second dielectric layer covering the second group of electrodes; said first and second dielectric layers being of a material having heavy metallic elements therein; and a first protection layer formed on the first dielectric layer and a second protection layer formed on the second dielectric layer, said insulating substrates being positioned relative to each other in a manner whereby they are oppositely placed with a discharge gap between them, said discharge gap being filled with gas capable of ionization and each cross point of an electrode of the first group of electrodes and an electrode of the second group of electrodes being a discharge point for display.
- 4. A display device as claimed in claim 3, wherein each of the protection layers comprises silicon dioxide.
- 5. A display device utilizing gas discharge, said display device comprising:
- (a) a pair of support members which are electrically nonconductive, each of said support members having a surface confronting that of the other;
- (b) first and second arrays of parallel-like electrical conductor members positioned at the respective of said confronting surfaces of said support members, the conductor members of said first and second arrays being transversely oriented with respect to each other;
- (c) first and second dielectric films overlying the respective of said first and second arrays of conductor members, said first and second dielectric films comprising heavy metallic elements; and
- (d) first and second layers of a composition, overlying the respective of said first and second dielectric films, for providing operating voltages which do not significantly vary or substantially change during long-term operation of the display device and thereby increase the effective and useful operating life of the display device;
- (e) said support members being positioned relative to each other to provide a space between said first and second layers, said space being filled with an ionizable gas;
- (f) each crosspoint of a conductor member of said first array and a conductor member of said second array being a discharge point for display.
- 6. A display device according to claim 5 wherein said composition of said first and second layers is selected from the group consisting of oxides of aluminum, titanium, zirconium, hafnium and silicon.
- 7. A display device utilizing gas discharge, said display device comprising:
- (a) a pair of dielectric material members, each of said members having a surface confronting that of the other member and a back surface opposite said confronting surface, said members being positioned relative to each other to provide a space between said confronting surfaces of said members;
- (b) each of said members comprising heavy metallic elements with a layer, on said confronting surface thereof, of a composition for providing operating voltages which do not significantly vary or substantially change during long-term operation of the display device and thereby increase the effective and useful operating life of the display device;
- (c) an ionizable gas filling said space between said layers on said confronting surfaces of said members;
- (d) first and second arrays of parallel-like electrical conductor members positioned at the respective of said back surfaces of said dielectric material members, said conductor members of said first and second arrays being transversely oriented with respect to each other, each crosspoint of a conductor member of the first array and a conductor member of the second array being a discharge point for display.
- 8. A display device according to claim 7 wherein said composition of said layer on each of said dielectric material members is selected from the group consisting of oxides of aluminum, titanium, zirconium, hafnium and silicon.
- 9. A display device utilizing gas discharge, said device comprising:
- (a) means providing a gas-tight envelope;
- (b) an ionizable gas filling said envelope;
- (c) a plurality of arrays of electrical conductor members mounted within said envelope means in spaced relationship; and
- (d) means arranged within said envelope to isolate said arrays of electrical conductor members from said ionizable gas filling, said isolating means comprising:
- 1. dielectric film means overlying said plurality of arrays of electrical conductor members, said dielectric film means comprising heavy metallic elements; and
- 2. composition layer means overlying said dielectric film means and contiguous to said ionizable gas, said composition layer means providing operating voltages which do not significantly vary or substantially change during long-term operation of said display device and thereby increase the effective and useful operating life of said display device.
- 10. A display device according to claim 9 wherein said composition layer means is selected from the group consisting of oxides of aluminum, titanium, zirconium, hafnium and silicon.
- 11. A display device utilizing gas discharge, said device comprising:
- (a) means providing a gas-tight envelope;
- (b) an ionizable gas filling said envelope;
- (c) a plurality of arrays of electrical conductor members mounted within said envelope means in spaced relationship;
- (d) dielectric film means overlying said plurality of arrays of electrical conductor members, said dielectric film means comprising heavy metallic elements; and
- (e) composition layer means overlying said dielectric film means and contiguous to said ionizable gas, said composition layer means providing operating voltages which do not significantly vary or substantially change during long-term operation of said display device and thereby increase the effective and usful operating life of said display device.
- 12. A display device according to claim 11 wherein said composition layer means is selected from the group consisting of oxides of aluminum, titanium, zirconium, hafnium and silicon.
