Claims
- 1. A flexible multiple layer sheet material, comprising:
- (a) a first layer having a first softening temperature:
- (b) a second sealant layer having a second softening temperature no lower than 20.degree. C. less than said first softening temperature;
- (c) a third layer, said third layer having a third softening temperature greater than said first and second softening temperatures;
- (d) a fourth layer having a fourth softening temperature greater than said first and second softening temperatures; and
- (e) a fifth impact layer, the composition of said impact layer comprising a component providing elastomeric properties to said impact layer and shock tolerance to said multiple layer sheet material;
- wherein the fourth layer is positioned over the first layer, the first layer is positioned over the third layer, the third layer is positioned over the fifth layer and the fifth layer is over the second layer.
- 2. A multiple layer sheet material as in claim 1 wherein said first layer comprises a vinylidene chloride copolymer.
- 3. A multiple layer sheet material as in claim 1 wherein said third layer comprises polyethylene terephthalate.
- 4. A multiple layer sheet material as in claim 1 wherein the composition of said second layer comprises at least 40% polypropylene by weight.
- 5. A multiple layer sheet material as in claim 2 wherein the composition of said second layer comprises at least 40% polypropylene by weight.
- 6. A multiple layer sheet material as in claim 3 wherein the composition of said second layer comprises at least 40% polypropylene by weight.
- 7. A multiple layer sheet material as in claim 1 wherein the composition of said fourth layer comprises polyethylene terephthalate.
- 8. A multiple layer sheet material as in claim 4, said fifth layer includes a second component comprising polyisobutylene.
- 9. A multiple layer sheet material as in claim 5, said fifth layer includes a second component comprising polyisobutylene.
- 10. A multiple layer sheet material as in claim 6, said fifth layer includes a second component comprising polyisobutylene.
- 11. A multiple layer sheet material as in claim 1 and including, as a third component of said fifth layer, an ethylene butene-1 copolymer containing 85% to 95% mole ethylene.
- 12. A multiple layer sheet material as in claim 9 and including, as a third component of said fifth layer, an ethylene butene-1 copolymer containing 85% to 95% mol ethylene.
- 13. A multiple layer sheet material as in claim 10 and including, as a third component of said fifth layer, an ethylene butene-1 copolymer containing 85% to 95% mole ethylene.
- 14. A multiple layer sheet material as in claim 1 wherein the composition of said second layer comprises a polymer selected from the group consisting of polyisobutylene and ethylene butene-1 copolymer.
- 15. A multiple layer sheet material as in claim 2 wherein the composition of said second layer comprises a polymer selected from the group consisting of polyisobutylene and ethylene butene-1 copolymer.
- 16. A multiple layer sheet material as in claim 3 wherein the composition of said second layer comprises a polymer selected from the group consisting of polyisobutylene and ethylene butene-1 copolymer.
- 17. A multiple layer sheet material as in claim 8 and including, as a third component of said fifth layer, a second composition providing elastomeric properties to said impact layer and increased shock tolerance to said multiple layer sheet material.
- 18. A multiple layer sheet material as in claim 9 and including, as a third component of said fifth layer, a second composition providing elastomeric properties to said impact layer and increased shock tolerance to said multiple layer sheet material.
- 19. A multiple layer sheet material as in claim 10 and including, as a third component of said fifth layer, a second composition providing elastomeric properties to said impact layer and increased shock tolerance to said multiple layer sheet material.
- 20. A multiple layer sheet material as in claim 1 wherein the composition of said second layer comprises a combination of polypropylene polymer and a polyethylene having a density of at least about 0.930.
- 21. A multiple layer sheet material as in claim 2 wherein the composition of said second layer comprises a combination of polypropylene polymer and polyethylene having a density of at least about 0.930.
- 22. A multiple layer sheet material as in claim 3 wherein the composition of said second layer comprises a combination of polypropylene polymer and a polyethylene having a density of at least about 0.930.
- 23. A multiple layer sheet material as in claim 20 wherein the composition of said second layer comprises, as a third component, a polymer selected from the group consisting of polyisobutylenes and ethylene butene-1 copolymers.
- 24. A multiple layer sheet material as in claim 21 wherein the composition of said second layer comprises, as a third component, a polymer selected from the group consisting of polyisobutylenes and ethylene butene-1 copolymers.
- 25. A multiple layer sheet material as in claim 22 wherein the composition of said second layer comprises, as a third component, a polymer selected from the group consisting of polyisobutylenes and ethylene butene-1 copolymers.
- 26. A package made with a sheet material of any one of claims 1-25.
- 27. A flexible multiple layer sheet material comprising:
- (a) a first layer having a first softening temperature,
- (b) a second sealant layer having a second softening temperature no lower than 20.degree. C. less than said first softening temperature,
- (c) a third layer having a third softening temperature greater than said first and second softening temperatures, and,
- (d) a fourth impact layer,
- wherein said third layer is positioned over said first layer, said first layer is positioned over said fourth layer, and, said fourth layer is positioned over said second layer.
- 28. The flexible multiple layer sheet material of claim 21 wherein the third layer is comprised of polyethylene terephthlate, the first layer is comprised of a barrier material, and the second layer is comprised of polypropylene.
- 29. The flexible multiple layer sheet material of claim 28 wherein between the third and first layers is adhesive, between the first and fourth layers is adhesive and between said fourth and second layers is adhesive.
- 30. The flexible multiple layer sheet material of any one of claims 28 or 29 wherein the first layer is comprised of a vinylidene chloride copolymer.
- 31. A multiple layer sheet material comprising:
- a first layer;
- a second barrier layer disposed beneath said first layer;
- a third impact layer disposed beneath said second barrier layer; and
- a fourth sealant layer disposed beneath said third layer
- wherein said first layer has a first softening temperature, the second layer has a second softening temperature, and the fourth layer has a third softening temperature, and, the third softening temperature is no lower than 20.degree. C. less than the second softening temperature, and, the first softening temperature is greater than the second and third softening temperatures.
- 32. The multiple layer sheet material of claim 31 wherein the first layer is comprised of polyethylene terephthalate, the second layer is comprised of a vinylidene chloride copolymer, and the fourth layer is comprised of polypropylene.
- 33. The multiple layer sheet material of claim 32 wherein between said first layer of polyethylene terephthalate and said second layer of vinylidene chloride copolymer is adhesive, between said second layer and said third impact layer is adhesive, and between said third impact layer and said fourth layer of polypropylene is adhesive.
- 34. A multiple sheet material comprising a plurality of superimposed layers, said layers comprising, in order, a first layer comprising polyethylene terephalate, a second layer comprising a vinylidene chloride copolymer, a third impact layer, and a fourth layer comprising polypropylene.
- 35. The multiple layer sheet material of claim 34 wherein there is adhesive between the layers.
