Claims
- 1. A crane having an upper works rotatably mounted on a lower works comprising:
- a) a boom pivotally connected to said upper works, said boom comprising a boom butt and a removable boom top, said boom butt having an interior side, an exterior side, and an end, said end adapted to connect to said boom top;
- b) a load hoist line for lifting loads; and
- c) a wire rope guide connected to said boom butt for guiding said load hoist line, said wire rope guide comprising two or more sheaves, each sheave being supported by a frame, wherein at least one of said frames is pivotally connected to said boom butt so as to permit at least one of said sheaves to be positionable between a first location adjacent to said interior side of said boom butt when said boom top is connected to said boom butt and a second location adjacent to said end of said boom butt when said boom top is not connected to said boom butt, said first location being spaced outwardly from said interior side of said boom butt so as to guide said load hoist line to said boom top, said second location being near said exterior side of said boom butt so as to guide said load hoist line around said end of said boom butt to permit the lifting of loads.
- 2. A crane according to claim 1 wherein at least two of said frames are connected together when the sheave that is positionable is in the first location adjacent to said interior side of said boom butt.
- 3. A crane according to claim 1 wherein said load hoist line is reeved around a portion of at least two of said sheaves when the sheave that is positionable is in the second location adjacent said end of said boom butt.
- 4. A crane according to claim 1 wherein said boom further comprises one or more removable boom inserts connected between said boom butt and said boom top, said boom inserts being disconnected from said boom butt when the sheave that is positionable is in the second location adjacent said end of said boom butt.
- 5. A crane having an upper works rotatably mounted on a lower works comprising:
- a) a boom pivotally connected to said upper works, said boom comprising a boom butt and a removable boom top, said boom butt having an interior side, an exterior side, and an end, said end adapted to connect to said boom top;
- b) one or more load hoist lines for lifting loads; and
- c) a wire rope guide for guiding said load hoist lines, said wire rope guide comprising two or more sheaves, each said sheave being supported by a sheave frame connected to said boom butt, said sheaves being located outwardly from said interior side of said boom butt so as to guide said load hoist lines to said boom top, wherein at least one of said sheave frames is pivotable so as to permit one of said sheaves to be moved to a secondary position on said end of said boom butt when said boom top has been removed from said crane, said secondary position being near said exterior side of said boom butt so as to guide one of said load hoist lines around said end of said boom butt to permit the lifting of loads.
- 6. A crane according to claim 5 wherein the sheave frame that is pivotal is connected to the end of the boom butt near the exterior side of said boom butt when said sheave is in said secondary position on said end of said boom butt.
- 7. A crane according to claim 5 wherein one of said load hoist lines is reeved around a portion of at least two of said sheaves when the sheave that is movable is in the secondary position on said end of said boom butt.
- 8. A crane according to claim 5 wherein said boom further comprises one or more removable boom inserts connected between said boom butt and said boom top, said boom inserts being removed from said boom butt when the sheave that is movable is in the secondary position on said end of said boom butt.
- 9. A crane having an upper works rotatably mounted on a lower works comprising:
- a) a boom pivotally connected to said upper works, said boom comprising a boom butt and a removable boom top, said boom butt having an interior side, an exterior side, and an end, said end adapted to connect to said boom top;
- b) a load hoist line for lifting loads; and
- c) a wire rope guide connected to said boom butt for guiding said load hoist line, said wire rope guide comprising a first sheave supported by a first frame and a second sheave supported by a second frame, wherein said first frame is pivotally connected to said boom butt so as to permit said first sheave to be positionable between a first location adjacent to said interior side of said boom butt when said boom top is connected to said boom butt and a second location adjacent to said end of said boom butt when said boom top is not connected to said boom butt, said first location being spaced outwardly from said interior side of said boom butt so as to guide said load hoist line to said boom top, said second location being near said exterior side of said boom butt so as to guide said load hoist line around said end of said boom butt to permit the lifting of loads.
- 10. A crane according to claim 9 wherein said first frame is removably connected to said second frame when said first sheave is in said first location adjacent to said interior side of said boom butt.
- 11. A crane according to claim 10 wherein said first frame is not connected to said second frame when said first sheave is in said second location adjacent to said end of said boom butt.
- 12. A crane according to claim 9 wherein said load hoist line is reeved around a portion of said first sheave and a portion of said second sheave when said first sheave is in the second location adjacent said end of said boom butt.
- 13. A crane having an upper works rotatably mounted on a lower works comprising:
- a) a boom pivotally connected to said upper works, said boom comprising a boom butt and a removable boom top, said boom butt having an interior side, an exterior side, and an end, said end adapted to connect to said boom top;
- b) a first load hoist line for lifting loads;
- c) a second load hoist line for lifting loads; and
- d) a wire rope guide comprising a first sheave for guiding said first load hoist line and a second sheave for guiding said second load hoist line, said first sheave being supported by a first sheave frame connected to said boom butt, said second sheave being supported by a second sheave frame connected to said boom butt, said first and second sheaves being located outwardly from said interior side of said boom butt so as to guide said first and second load hoist lines to said boom top, wherein said first sheave frame is pivotable so as to permit said first sheave to be moved to a secondary position on said end of said boom butt when said boom top has been removed from said crane, said secondary position being near said exterior side of said boom butt so as to guide one of said load hoist lines around said end of said boom butt to permit the lifting of loads.
- 14. A crane according to claim 13 wherein said first sheave frame is removably connected to said second sheave frame.
- 15. A crane according to claim 13 wherein said first sheave frame is connected to said end of said boom butt at a location adjacent to said exterior side of said boom butt when said first sheave is in said secondary position on said end of said boom butt.
- 16. A crane according to claim 13 wherein said second sheave frame is pivotable so as to permit said second sheave to move to a secondary position on said end of said boom butt when said boom top has been removed from said crane, said secondary position being near said interior side of said boom butt.
- 17. A crane according to claim 16 wherein said first sheave frame is pivotally connected to said second sheave frame.
- 18. A crane according to claim 17 wherein a collapsible strut is connected between said first sheave frame and said second sheave frame.
- 19. A crane having an upper works rotatably mounted on a lower works comprising:
- a) a boom pivotally connected to said upper works, said boom comprising a boom butt, a removable boom top, and one or more removable boom inserts, said boom butt having an interior side, an exterior side, and an end, said interior side and said end joining together to form an interior edge, said exterior side and said end joining together to form an exterior edge, said end adapted to connect to said boom inserts;
- b) a first load hoist line for lifting loads;
- c) a second load hoist line for lifting loads; and
- d) a wire rope guide for guiding said first and second load hoist lines, said wire rope guide comprising a first sheave for guiding said first load hoist line and a second sheave for guiding said second load hoist line, said first sheave being supported by a first sheave frame, said second sheave being supported by a second sheave frame, said first sheave frame being pivotally connected to said interior edge of said boom butt and removably connected to said second sheave frame, said second sheave frame being connected to said interior side of said boom butt, said first sheave being located outwardly from said interior side of said boom butt so as to guide said first load hoist line to said boom top, said second sheave being located outwardly from said interior side of said boom butt so as to guide said second load hoist line to said boom top, wherein said first sheave frame is pivotable so as to permit said first sheave to be moved to a secondary position on said end of said boom butt when said boom inserts and said boom top have been removed from said crane, said secondary position being near said exterior edge of said boom butt so as to guide one of said load hoist lines around said end of said boom butt to permit the lifting of loads.
