Claims
- 1. A process for modifying a thermopolastic polymer through a series of sequential reactions in an extruder-reactor comprising:
- (a) introducing said polymer into an extruder;
- (b) conveying said polymer into a reaction zone wherein said polymer undergoes one of the sequential reactions with a first reagent;
- (c) conveying said polymer into a first purification zone wherein impurities produced by the reaction of the preceding step are removed from or neutralized in said polymer;
- (d) repeating the steps of (b) and (c) on the polymer of step (c) with at least a second and different reagent than the first reagent, until each of said sequential reactions are completed; and
- (e) conveying said polymer through the rest of the extrusion process, wherein said reaction and purification zones are isolated from each other.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein said polymer is introduced into said reactor in molten form.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein said polymer is melted after introduction into the extruder reactor.
- 4. The process of claim 1, wherein said polymer is an elastomer.
- 5. The process of claim 4, wherein said elastomer is selected from the group consisting of ethylene-propylene copolymer and ethylene-propylene diene terpolymer.
- 6. The process of claim 1, wherein one of said sequential reactions is the grafting of one or more functional compounds to said polymer in the presence of a free radical initiator.
- 7. The process of claim 6, wherein said functional compound is unsaturated and wherein said functional compound includes functionality selected from the group consisting of carboxylic acid functionality and a derivative of said carboxylic acid functionality.
- 8. The process of claim 7, wherein said functional compound is selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid and an acrylic acid derivative.
- 9. The process of claim 7, wherein said functional compound is selected from the group consisting of maleic anhydride and maleic anhydride derivatives.
- 10. The process of claim 1, wherein the sequential reactions comprise grafting a functional compound to said polymer followed by reacting said grafted functional compound containing polymer with a reactive compound.
- 11. The process of claim 10, wherein said functional compound is unsaturated and wherein said functionality is-selected from the group consisting of carboxylic acid anhydride functionality and a derivative of said functionality and wherein said reactive compound is a nitrogen containing compound.
- 12. The process of claim 10, wherein said functional compound is maleic anhydride and said reactive compound is a primary amine.
- 13. The process of claim 12, wherein said primary amine is selected from the group consisting of 4-(3-aminopropyl) morpholine and 1-(2-aminoethyl) piperazine.
- 14. The process of claim 10 wherein said functional compound is maleic anhydride and said reactive compound is aminoethylpiperazine.
- 15. The process of claim 1 further comprising the step of drying said polymer before it is introduced into said extruder-reactor.
- 16. The process of claim 1 further comprising the step of injecting inert gas into said polymer to assist in the removal of said volatile impurities.
- 17. The process of claim 16, wherein said inert gas is nitrogen.
- 18. The process of claim 17, wherein said nitrogen is injected into said polymer immediately before said purification zone.
- 19. The process of claim 1 further comprising the step of pelletizing the polymer as it is extruded from the extruder-reactor.
