Claims
- 1. A multi-cycle refastenable contact responsive non-tacky fastener system, having a fastening component comprising:
- a) a contact responsive fastening layer which has essentially no surface tack, is multiply releasable and refastenable against a non-tacky target surface, and has substantially constant 90.degree. peel strength at room temperature in the range of from at least 0.061 kN/m to about 5 kN/m when in contact with glass, and
- b) a mounting layer onto which said contact responsive fastening layer is directly attached.
- 2. The fastener system of claim 1 further comprising a non-tacky target surface component.
- 3. The fastener system of claim 1 in which the composition of the fastening layer is selected from the group consisting of homopolymers, random copolymers, block copolymers, and graft copolymers.
- 4. The fastener system of claim 1 in which a covering layer is removably attached to the fastening layer.
- 5. The fastener system of claim 1 in which the fastening layer is cleanable with retention of fastening characteristics.
- 6. The fastener system of claim 1 in which the fastening layer comprises a polymer of from about 10 to about 50 weight percent of acrylonitrile and about 50 to about 90 weight percent of at least one of butadiene and isoprene, said polymer having a Mooney viscosity of from about 20 to about 95.
- 7. The fastener system of claim 1 in which the fastening layer comprises a crosslinked oligomeric resin having one or more like or different hard segments, and one or more like or different soft segments, and one or more like or different monovalent moieties containing a radiation-sensitive, addition-polymerizable, functional group.
- 8. The fastener system of claim 1 wherein the fastening layer is selected from the group consisting of an ethylene-containing polymer, a urethane polymer, a urethane-acrylate polymer, an acrylic polymer, an acrylate polymer, a butyl rubber, a butadiene acrylonitrile polymer, a butadiene-acrylonitrile-isoprene polymer, a block copolymer, a graft copolymer, mixtures thereof, and blends thereof.
- 9. The fastener system of claim 8 wherein the fastening layer is selected from the group consisting of a butadiene-acrylonitrile polymer, and a butadieneacrylonitrile-isoprene polymer.
- 10. The fastener system of claim 8 wherein the fastening layer is a urethane-acrylate polymer.
- 11. The fastener system of claim 1 wherein the fastening layer has a substantially constant peel strength of less than about 1.5 kN/m when in contact with the target surface.
- 12. The fastener system of claim 11 wherein the fastening layer has a substantially constant peel strength of less than about 0.5 kN/m when in contact with the target surface.
- 13. The fastener of claim 1 wherein the 90.degree. peel strength is at least about 0.1 kN/m.
- 14. The fastener of claim 1 which can be refastened at least 100 times.
- 15. The fastener system according to claim 1 further comprising a backing layer operatively attached to the contact responsive fastener.
- 16. The fastener system according to claim 1 further comprising means for strengthening the contact responsive fastener.
- 17. The fastener system of claim 2 in which the target surface comprises another non-tacky fastening layer.
- 18. A multi-cycle refastenable contact responsive non-tacky fastener system having a fastening component comprising:
- (a) a contact responsive fastening layer selected from the group consisting of an ethylene-containing polymer, a urethane polymer consisting of the reaction of an isocyanate and an isocyanate-reactive compound, a butyl rubber, a butadiene-acrylonitrile polymer, a butadieneacrylonitrile-isoprene polymer, a block copolymer, a graft copolymer, mixtures thereof, and blends thereof, wherein said contact responsive fastening layer has essentially no surface tack, is multiply releasable and refastenable against a non-tacky target surface, and has substantially constant 90.degree. peel strength at room temperature in the range of from at least 0.061 kN/m to about 5 kN/m when in contact with glass;
- (b) a mounting layer; and
- (c) a backing layer interposed between said contact responsive layer and said mounting layer.
- 19. The fastener system of claim 18 wherein the fastening layer is selected from the group consisting of said butadiene-acrylonitrile polymer, and said butadiene-acrylonitrile-isoprene polymer.
- 20. The fastener system of claim 19 in which the said polymer comprises from about 10 to about 50 weight percent of acrylonitrile and about 50 to about 90 weight percent of at least one of butadiene and isoprene, said polymer having a Mooney viscosity of from about 20 to about 95.
- 21. The fastener of claim 18 which can be refastened at least 100 times.
- 22. The fastener of claim 23 which can be refastened at least 100 times.
- 23. The fastener of claim 22 which can be refastened at least 100 times.
- 24. The fastener system according to claim 22 further comprising a backing layer operatively attached to the fastening layer.
- 25. The fastener system according to claim 22 further comprising a backing layer interposed between the fastening layer and the connecting means.
- 26. The fastener system according to claim 22 further comprising means for strengthening the fastening layer.
- 27. A non-tacky contact responsive fastener system comprising:
- at least one fastening component having a polymer fastening layer which demonstrates properties of:
- i) essentially no surface track;
- ii) multiple repositionability against a non-tacky surface; and
- iii) a substantially constant low 90.degree. peel strength at room temperature in the range of from at least 0.06 kN/m to about 5 kN/m when in contact with glass wherein the polymer fastening layer is a different material than the target surface and has a solubility parameter that is sufficiently different from that of the target surface to prevent blocking.
- 28. The fastener system of claim 27 further comprising a non-tacky fastening component target surface.
- 29. The fastener system of claim 27 wherein the polymer fastening layer demonstrates a substantially constant low 90.degree. peel strength of less than about 0.5 kN/m when in contact with said target surface.
- 30. The fastener of claim 27 which can be refastened at least 100 times.
- 31. The fastener system according to claim 27 further comprising a backing layer operatively attached to the fastening layer.
- 32. The fastener system according to claim 27 further comprising means for strengthening the fastening layer.
- 33. An assembly comprising, in order, a first substrate comprising a structure that is to be covered, a multicycle refastenable contact responsive fastener having a fastening layer that exhibits essentially no surface tack and low 90.degree. peel strength at room temperature in the range of from at least 0.061 kN/m to about 5 kN/m when in contact with glass,and a second substrate in contact with said fastening layer, wherein said second substrate comprises a covering for said substrate.
- 34. The fastener system according to claim 33 further comprising a backing layer operatively attached to the contact responsive fastener.
- 35. The fastener system according to claim 33 further comprising means for strengthening the contact responsive fastener.
- 36. A system for connecting a first substrate to a second substrate, the first substrate comprising a first multicycle refastenable contact responsive fastening layer that exhibits essentially no surface tack and low 90.degree. peel strength at room temperature in the range of from at least 0.061 kN/m to about 5 kN/m when in contact with glass and a second substrate positioned to contact with the first fastening layer.
- 37. The system according to claim 36 wherein the first fastening layer is capable of being coated on the first substrate.
- 38. The system according to claim 36 further comprising a second multicycle refastenable contact responsive fastening layer that exhibits essentially no surface tack and low 90.degree. peel strength at room temperature in the range of from at least 0.061 kN/m to about 5 kN/m when in contact with glass positioned to contact with the first fastening layer.
- 39. A system according to claim 36 further comprising a target portion on the second substrate positioned to contact with the first fastening layer.
- 40. A multicycle refastenable contact responsive non-tacky fastener system comprising
- (a) a contact responsive fastening layer having essentially no surface tack and a low 90.degree. peel strength of from a least 0.061 kN/m to about 5 kN/m when in contact with glass wherein said contact responsive fastening layer is selected from the group consisting of an ethylene-acrylonitrile polymer, a crosslinked butadiene-acrylonitrile-isoprene polymer, a block copolymer, a graft copolymer, mixtures thereof and blends thereof, and wherein said target is a different material than said contact responsive fastening layer; and
- (b) a connecting means functionally secured to the contact responsive fastening layer.
- 41. The fastener system of claim 40 wherein the fastening layer has a substantially constant 90.degree. peel strength when in contact with the target surface.
- 42. The fastener system of claim 41 wherein the substantially constant 90.degree. peel strength is less than about 5 kN/m.
- 43. The fastener system of claim 40 in which the fastening layer comprises a polymer of from about 10 to about 50 weight percent of acrylonitrile and about 50 to about 90 weight percent of at least one of butadiene and isoprene, said polymer having a Mooney viscosity of from about 20 to about 95.
- 44. The fastener system of claim 40 attached to the non-tacky target surface.
- 45. The fastener system of claim 40 further comprising a covering on the fastening layer.
- 46. The fastener system of claim 40 which is recyclable.
- 47. The fastener system of claim 40 wherein the fastening layer has essentially no adhesion to paper.
- 48. The fastener system of claim 40 wherein the connecting means comprises a polymeric film.
- 49. The fastener system of claim 42 wherein the substantially constant 90.degree. peel strength is less than about 1.5 kN/m.
- 50. The fastener system of claim 42 wherein the substantially constant 90.degree. peel strength is less than about 0.5 kN/m.
