Claims
- 1. A composition comprising a blend of (A) a major proportion of a hydrocarbon fuel, a lubricating oil, or a mixture of a hydrocarbon fuel and a lubricating oil, and (B) a minor detergent amount of a multipurpose additive comprising a mixture of:
- (1) the reaction product of (a) a glycidyl ether compound of the formula ##STR19## where R.sup.6 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group having at least 8 carbon atoms and m is 1-3, and (b) an amine having at least one amino group having at least one active hydrogen atom; and
- (2) a polycarboxylic acid ester wherein the ester group is the residue of a C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkanol, an alkyl phenoxy polyethoxy ethanol, or the mixed residue of said alkanol and said ethanol.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein said amine has the formula: ##STR20## where R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 independently are hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl substituted by --NH.sub.2 or --OH, R.sup.4 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 divalent hydrocarbon radical, R.sup.5 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, and n is 0 to about 5; and the ester group of the ester component (2) is a mixed residue of a C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkanol and an alkyl phenoxy polyethoxy ethanol.
- 3. The composition of claim 2 wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are hydrogen and R.sup.4 is ethylene or propylene.
- 4. The composition of claim 1 wherein the mole ratio of said glycidyl ether compound to said amine is 2:1 to about 4:1, R.sup.6 is polyalkylene having a molecular weight of about 500 to 2000, and m is 1-2.
- 5. The composition of claim 4 wherein said amine has the formula: ##STR21## where R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 independently are hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl substituted by --NH.sub.2 or --OH, R.sup.4 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 divalent hydrocarbon radical, R.sup.5 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, and n is 0 to about 5.
- 6. The composition of claim 5 wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are hydrogen, R.sup.4 is ethylene or propylene, and the ester group of the ester component (2) is a mixed residue of a C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkanol and an alkyl phenoxy polyethoxy ethanol.
- 7. The composition of claim 1 wherein the mole ratio of said glycidyl ether compound to said amine is 2:1 to about 4:1, R.sup.6 is nonyl, m is 1-2, and the ester group of the ester component (2) is a mixed residue of a of a C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkanol and an alkyl phenoxy polyethoxy ethanol.
- 8. The composition of claim 7 wherein said amine has the formula: ##STR22## where R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 independently are hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl substituted by --NH.sub.2 or --OH, R.sup.4 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 divalent hydrocarbon radical, R.sup.5 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, and n is 0 to about 5.
- 9. The composition of claim 8 wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are hydrogen and R.sup.4 is ethylene or propylene.
- 10. The composition of claim 1 wherein R.sup.6 is polyisobutylene or polyisopropylene and said R.sup.6 has a molecular weight of about 500 to 2000, m is 1-2, the mole ratio of said glycidyl ether compound to said amine is 1:1 to about 2:1, and said amine is selected from ethylene diamine, N-(3-aminopropyl) morpholine, 3-aminoethyl pyridine, 2-aminoethylaminoethanol, N,N-dimethylethylenediamine, aniline and hexylamine.
- 11. The composition of claim 1 wherein R.sup.6 is nonyl, m is 1-2, the mole ratio of said glycidyl ether compound to said amine is 1:1 to about 4:1, and said amine is selected from ethylene diamine, N-(3-aminopropyl) morpholine, 3-aminomethyl pyridine, 2-aminoethylaminoethanol, N,N-dimethylethylenediamine, aniline and hexylamine.
- 12. The composition of claim 1 wherein the alkyl group of the alkyl phenoxy polyethoxy ethanol is C.sub.4 -C.sub.20 and said alkyl phenoxy polyethoxy ethanol contains 1-20 moles of condensed ethylene oxide.
- 13. The composition of claim 12 wherein the ester component (2) is an ester of adipic acid, isodecanol, and octyl phenoxy polyethoxy ethanol conaining an average of 5 moles of condensed ethylene oxide.
- 14. A multipurpose additive for a hydrocarbon fuel, a lubricating oil, or a mixture of a hydrocarbon fuel and a lubricating oil, comprising a mixture of:
- (1) the reaction product of (a) a glycidyl ether compound of the formula ##STR23## where R.sup.6 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group having at least 8 carbon atoms and m is 1-3, and (b) an amine having at least one amino group having at least one active hydrogen atom, and
- (2) a polycarboxylic acid ester wherein the ester group is the residue of a C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkanol, an alkyl phenoxy polyethoxy ethanol, or the mixed residue of said alkanol and said ethanol.
- 15. The additive of claim 14 wherein said amine has the formula: ##STR24## where R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 independently are hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl substituted by --NH.sub.2 or --OH, R.sup.4 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 divalent hydrocarbon radical, R.sup.5 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, and n is 0 to about 5; and the ester group of the ester component (2) is a mixed residue of a C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkanol and an alkyl phenoxy polyethoxy ethanol.
- 16. The additive of claim 15 wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are hydrogen and R.sup.4 is ethylene or propylene.
- 17. The additive of claim 12 wherein the mole ratio of said glycidyl ether compound to said amine is 2:1 to about 4:1, R.sup.6 is polyalkylene having a molecular weight of about 500 to 2000, and m is 1-2.
- 18. The additive of claim 17 wherein said amine has the formula: ##STR25## where R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 independently are hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl substituted by --NH.sub.2 or --OH, R.sup.4 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 divalent hydrocarbon radical, R.sup.5 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, and n is 0 to about 5.
- 19. The additive of claim 18 wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are hydrogen, R.sup.4 is ethylene or propylene, and the ester group of the ester component (2) is a mixed residue of a C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 alkanol and an alkyl phenoxy polyethoxy ethanol.
- 20. The additive of claim 14 wherein the mole ratio of said glycidyl ether compound to said amine is 2:1 to about 4:1, R.sup.6 is nonyl, and m is 1-2.
- 21. The additive of claim 20 wherein said amine has the formula ##STR26## where R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 independently are hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl substituted by --NH.sub.2 or --OH, R.sup.4 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 divalent hydrocarbon radical, R.sup.5 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, and n is 0 to about 5.
- 22. The additive of claim 21 wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are hydrogen and R.sup.4 is ethylene or propylene.
- 23. The additive of claim 14 wherein R.sup.6 is polyisobutylene or polyisopropylene and said R.sup.6 has a molecular weight of about 500 to 2000, m is 102, the mole ratio of said glycidyl ether compound to said amine is 1:1 to about 2:1, and said amine is selected from ethylene diamine, N-(3-aminopropyl) morpholine, 3-aminomethyl pyridine, 2-aminoethylaminoethanol, N,N-dimethylethylenediamine, aniline and hexylamine.
- 24. The additive of claim 23 wherein R.sup.6 is nonyl, m is 1-2, the mole ratio of said glycidyl ether compound to said amine is 1:1 to about 4:1, and said amine is selected from ethylene diamine, N-(3-aminopropyl) morpholine, 3-aminomethyl pyridine, 2-aminoethylaminoethanol, N,N-dimethylethylenediamine, aniline and hexylamine.
- 25. The additive of claim 14 wherein reaction product (1) is selected from ##STR27## and mixtures thereof, wherein R.sup.6 is polyisobutyl of number average molecular weight of about 670 and R.sup.7 is hydrogen or the same as R.sup.6.
- 26. A composition comprising a major proportion of gasoline, and a minor amount of the additive of claim 1 in amounts of said reaction product (1) of about 20-300 ppm and said polycarboxylic acid ester (2) of about 100-650 ppm.
- 27. The composition of claim 14 wherein the alkyl group of the alkyl phenoxy polyethoxy ethanol is C.sub.4 -C.sub.20 and said alkyl phenoxy polyethoxy ethanol contains 1-20 moles of condensed ethylene oxide.
- 28. The composition of claim 27 wherein the ester component (2) is an ester of adipic acid, isodecanol, and octyl phenoxy polyethoxy ethanol containing an average of 5 moles of condensed ethylene oxide.

This is a continuation-in-part application of application Ser. No. 671,461, filed Mar. 29, 1976 and abandoned as of the filing date accorded this application. Ser. No. 671,461 is a continuation-in-part of application Ser. No. 536,075 filed Dec. 24, 1974, now abandoned.
