Claims
- 1. A composition comprising a mixture of (1) a major proportion of a hydrocarbon fuel, a lubricating oil, or a mixture of a hydrocarbon fuel and a lubricating oil, and (2) a minor detergent amount of a multipurpose additive comprising the reaction product of (a) a glycidyl ether compound of the formula ##STR19## where R.sup.6 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group having at least 8 carbon atoms and m is 1-3, and (b) an amine having at least one amino group, said amine having two or more active hydrogen atoms, and wherein the mole ratio of (a) to (b) is at least 2:1, said amine being selected from aliphatic monoamines, cyclic amines, heterocyclic amines, aromatic amines, and aliphatic polyamines of the formula ##STR20## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 independently are hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl substituted by --NH.sub.2 or --OH, R.sup.4 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 divalent hydrocarbon radical, R.sup.5 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, and n is 0 to about 5.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein said amine is the said aliphatic polyamine.
- 3. The composition of claim 1 wherein the mole ratio of said glycidyl ether compound to said amine is 2:1 to about 4:1.
- 4. The composition of claim 1 wherein the mole ratio of said glycidyl ether compound to said amine is 2:1 to about 4:1, R.sup.6 is nonyl, and m is 1-2.
- 5. The composition of claim 1 wherein said amine is selected from N-(3-aminopropyl) morpholine, 3-aminoethyl pyridine, 2-aminoethylaminoethanol, N,N-dimethylethylenediamine, aniline and hexylamine.
- 6. The composition of claim 1 wherein R.sup.6 is nonyl, m is 1-2, and said amine is selected from N-(3-aminopropyl) morpholine, 3-aminomethyl pyridine, 2-aminoethylaminoethanol, N,N-dimethylethylenediamine, aniline and hexylamine.
- 7. A multipurpose additive for a hydrocarbon fuel, a lubricating oil, or a mixture of a hydrocarbon fuel and a lubricating oil, comprising the reaction product of (a) a glycidyl ether compound of the formula ##STR21## where R.sup.6 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group having at least 8 carbon atoms and m is 1-3, and (b) an amine having at least one amino group, said amine having two or more active hydrogen atoms, and wherein the mole ratio of (a) to (b) is at least 2:1, said amine being selected from aliphatic monoamines, cyclic amines, heterocyclic amines, aromatic amines, and aliphatic polyamines of the formula ##STR22## wherein R.sub.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 independently are hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl substituted by --NH.sub.2 or --OH, R.sup.4 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 divalent hydrocarbon radical, R.sup.5 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, and n is 0 to about 5.
- 8. The additive of claim 7 wherein said amine is the said aliphatic polyamine.
- 9. The additive of claim 7 wherein the mole ratio of said glycidyl ether compound to said amine is 2:1 to about 4:1.
- 10. The additive of claim 7 wherein the mole ratio of said glycidyl ether compound to said amine is 2:1 to about 4:1, R.sup.6 is nonyl, and m is 1-2.
- 11. The additive of claim 7 wherein said amine is selected from N-(3-aminopropyl) morpholine, 3-aminomethyl pyridine, 2-aminoethylaminoethanol, N,N-dimethylethylenediamine, aniline and hexylamine.
