Claims
- 1. Sound generating apparatus comprising,
- output means,
- a plurality of tone generators coupled to said output means for providing note signals with each including means for producing any of a large common plurality of frequencies characterizing respective musical notes over at least an octave,
- a plurality of note selecting means for selecting note signals characteristic of selected notes for production to said tone generators where each note selecting means includes means upon selection for providing a note selection signal representing a unique contribution to a signal waveform on said output means which note selection signal is representative of note pitch and at least one of speed of note selection and force applied to note selecting means,
- control means coupled to said tone generators for providing continuous data signals to said tone generators representative of the selected note signals and for selecting which of said tone generators coupled to said output means is to provide said note signals,
- and scanning means responsive to said note selecting means for coupling the selected note selection signals to said control means.
- 2. Sound generating apparatus in accordance with claim 1 for producing sound characterized by as many as a predetermined plurality of musical notes occurring simultaneously,
- at least as many of said tone generators as said predetermined plurality,
- said control means including means for associating any of said tone generators not then coupled to said output means for providing a note signal for association with any other note selected by said note selecting means.
- 3. Sound generating apparatus in accordance with claim 2 wherein
- said control means including means for associating one and only one tone generator with each of a plurality of selected notes.
- 4. Sound generating apparatus in accordance with claim 2 for producing a number of musical notes in excess of said predetermined plurality, the number of said tone generators being less than said number of musical notes,
- said switching means including means for associating each note selected by said note selecting means with one of said tone generators that generates the frequency of that note.
- 5. Sound generating apparatus in accordance with claim 4 wherein said switching control means includes means for associating any of said tone generators not already associated with a selected note with any note that is selected and not then associated with any other tone generator.
- 6. Sound generating apparatus in accordance with claim 1 wherein said control means includes means responsive to said note selecting means for providing a first number of control signals representative of selected notes and means responsive to said control signals for providing a second number less than said first number of time sequenced control signals,
- and second means for coupling said time sequenced control signals to selected ones of said tone generators.
- 7. Sound generating apparatus in accordance with claim 1 wherein said control means includes means responsive to the order in which said note selecting means selects notes for associating respective ones of said tone generators with the selected notes.
- 8. Sound generating apparatus in accordance with claim 1 wherein said control means comprises means for associating an idle tone generator with a note selected by said note selecting means which selected note is disassociated from all other tone generators and means for disassociating the formerly idle tone generator when said note selecting means releases that note from selection.
- 9. Sound generating apparatus in accordance with claim 1 wherein said control means includes means responsive to said means for scanning for determining a note selection not then associated with a tone generator for associating that note with a tone generator not then associated with any other note.
- 10. Sound generating apparatus in accordance with claim 9 wherein said control means further comprises means for delaying said scanning function until said control means associates a selected note with a tone generator.
- 11. Sound generating apparatus in accordance with claim 1 and further comprising means for sampling and holding note information while said means for scanning scans said note selecting means.
- 12. Sound generating apparatus in accordance with claim 11 and further comprising means for storing the sampled and held information in the tone generator associated with the note.
- 13. Sound generating apparatus in accordance with claim 1 wherein said control means includes means for associating a particular tone generator with a particular note so long as said note selecting means continues designating selection of that note and interrupting such association in response to termination of such selection.
- 14. Apparatus in accordance with claim 13 and further comprising means for retaining the information of the note associated with a tone generator just released.
- 15. Sound generating apparatus in accordance with claim 6 wherein said scanning means comprises a temporal sequencer having means for sequentially sampling the states of said note selecting means,
- a note address generator having means for indicating the note status to be sensed,
- a note-selected detector having means for indicating the state of selection of a note,
- a note address tolerance generator having means for establishing a predetermined region of acceptable note addresses,
- and gating means responsive to a signal form said note-selected detector indicating selection of a note.
- 16. Sound generating apparatus in accordance with claim 6 wherein said scanning means comprises a temporal sequencer having means for sensing the state of said note selecting means,
- a note address generator having means for designating respective ones of said notes,
- a note-selected detector having means for providing a signal indicative of a note being selected,
- and memory means for providing a signal representative of whether a note is associated with a respective tone generator.
- 17. Sound generating apparatus in accordance with claim 6 wherein said scanning means comprises a temporal sequencer having means for sensing the states of said note selecting means,
- a subsequencer having means for generating subintervals of intervals designated by said temporal sequencer,
- a control unit address generator having means for designating the location of respective control units,
- a note address generator having means for providing note address signals representative of respective notes,
- a note-selected detector,
- and a comparator having means for comparing a note address signal provided by said note address generator with address signals stored in the tone generators designating the associated note to provide a signal representative of which note an active tone generator is then associated with.
- 18. Sound generating apparatus in accordance with claim 15 wherein said gating means comprise octave gates each associated with a particular octave in which a selected note may occur and note gates each associated with the order of all notes that may be selected separated by an octave for designating any note by enabling only one octave gate and only one note gate in response to a signal from said note selected detector.
- 19. Sound generating apparatus in accordance with claim 15 and further comprising a note frequency generator having means for providing a frequency designating signal and a source of a control signal coupled to said note frequency generator for establishing any frequency designated by said note frequency generator in response to said frequency designating signal.
- 20. Sound generating apparatus in accordance with claim 15 wherein said note address generator comprises a staircase waveform generator having means for providing a staircase waveform with the different levels designating the different note addresses,
- a note multivibrator,
- and means for coupling said note multivibrator to said staircase waveform generator so that the output of said note multivibrator defines transitions in said staircase waveform.
- 21. Sound generating apparatus in accordance with claim 18 and further comprising a note frequency generator and means for coupling the outputs of said octave and note address gates to said note frequency generator for controlling any designated note frequency.
- 22. Sound generating apparatus in accordance with claim 21 and further comprising a source of a variable tuning potential,
- a tapped note attenuator,
- a note multivibrator chain,
- a plurality of note gates each having one input leg coupled to a respective note attenuator tap and a second leg for receiving a note designation from said note multivibrator chain,
- a tapped octave attenuator,
- an impedance buffer amplifier having its input coupled to the outputs of all said note gates comprising means for providing a note potential for application to said tapped octave attenuator,
- an octave multivibrator chain,
- a plurality of octave gates each having one leg coupled to a respective tap of said octave attenuator and a second input leg for receiving respective enabling signals from said octave multivibrator chain,
- and an output buffer amplifier having its input coupled to the outputs of all said octave gates for providing a frequency designating signal.
- 23. Sound generating apparatus in accordance with claim 1 and further comprising,
- means responsive to said note selecting means for providing a potential characteristic of the frequency of a selected note,
- each of said tone generators comprising a voltage controlled oscillator responsive to said potential for oscillating at the frequency of the note selected.
- 24. Sound generating apparatus in accordance with claim 23 and further comprising sampling means responsive to said scanning means for storing said characteristic potential,
- and means for coupling the stored characteristic potential to said voltage controlled oscillator to control the frequency thereof.
