Claims
- 1. In a process for enhancing the degree of imidization of polymers having an acid number .ltoreq.0.5 equivalents per kilogram of polymer, a transmissivity of .gtoreq.85% and a yellowness index of .ltoreq.15 and comprising essentially repeat units of the formula I ##STR3## where R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each hydrogen or methyl, and
- R.sup.3 is C.sub.6 -C.sub.14 -aryl, which may be monosubstituted, disubstituted or trisubstituted by radicals selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy and halogen,
- obtained by reacting a polymer based on C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 -alkyl esters of methacrylic acid or of acrylic acid or mixtures of such esters with an aromatic amine of the formula II
- R.sup.3 NH.sub.2 II,
- the improvement which comprises: carrying out the imidization reaction in the presence of an amine having a pK.sub.b value not greater than 9.
