Claims
- 1. Insect repellent compounds which are liquid at room temperature and of the formula ##STR3## wherein R, R' and R" are alkyls and the sum of the carbon atoms therein is eight, and wherein R"' is methyl, ethyl or a mixture thereof, and wherein the acyl moiety, ##STR4## of such formula, is a mixture of acyls of corresponding acids of the formula ##STR5## wherein in about 31% of the neodecanoic acid R is hexyl and R' and R" are both methyl, in about 67% of the neodecanoic acid R' is methyl, R" is alkyl of a carbon atoms content greater than that of methyl and less than that of R, and R is of a carbon atoms content less than that of hexyl, and in about 2% of the neodecanoic acid R' and R" are both of a carbon atoms content greater than that of methyl and less than that of R, and R is of a carbon atoms content less than that of hexyl.
- 2. An insect repellent compound according to claim 1 wherein R"' is methyl.
- 3. An insect repellent compound according to claim 1 wherein R"' is ethyl.
- 4. A built synthetic organic detergent composition for washing laundry or hard surfaces and for making them insect repellent, which comprises a detersive proportion of synthetic organic detergent, a building proportion, sufficient to increase the detersive action of the synthetic organic detergent, of a builder for such detergent, which builder is selected from the group consisting of water soluble polyphosphates, carbonates, bicarbonates, borates, silicates, gluconates, nitrilotriacetates, and polyacetal carboxylates, water insoluble zeolites, and mixtures thereof, and an insect repellent proportion of N-lower alkyl neodecanamide of claim 1, which proportion is sufficient so that after washing of the laundry or hard surface with the detergent composition enough of the N-lower alkyl neodecanamide is retained on the surface of the washed item so as to repel insects from such surface.
- 5. A detergent composition according to claim 4 which comprises 1 to 35% of a synthetic organic detergent selected from the group consisting of anionic and nonionic detergents and mixtures thereof, 10 to 90% of builder(s) for such detergent(s), and 0.2 to 10% of the N-lower alkyl neodecanamide, which composition is in particulate form.
- 6. A particulate laundry detergent composition according to claim 5 which comprises 7 to 30% of the synthetic organic detergent or a mixture of such detergents, 20 to 75% of water soluble builder salt(s) for such detergent(s), which builder salt(s) is/are selected from the group consisting of sodium polyphosphates, sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and borax, and mixtures thereof, 0 to 50% of water soluble filler salt and 0.5 to 5% of the neodecanamide mixture wherein R'" is methyl.
- 7. A detergent composition according to claim 4, which is in liquid form and which comprises 3 to 20% of synthetic organic detergent selected from the group consisting of anionic and nonionic detergents and mixtures thereof, 10 to 30% of water soluble and/or water insoluble builder salt(s) for such detergent(s), 0 to 20% of water soluble filler salt, 0.5 to 5% of the N-lower alkyl neodecanamide, and 50 to 90% of water.
- 8. A process for repelling insects from an area, location or item which comprises applying to or near such area, location or item an insect repelling quantity of a compound of claim 1.
- 9. A process according to claim 8 wherein the neoalkanamide is applied to the area, location or item by washing such area, location or item with a synthetic organic detergent composition which comprises a detersive proportion of synthetic organic detergent, and an insect repelling proportion of the N-lower alkyl neoalkanamide(s) so that the application rate of the neoalkanamide is in the range of 0.2 to 10 g./sq. m., said insect repelling proportion of said N-lower alkyl lower neoalkanamide(s) being such that sufficient neoalkanamide is retained on the washed area, location or item, after washing with the detergent composition, to repel insects from such area, location or item.
