Claims
- 1. In a process for the permanent deformation of hair wherein, in a first stage the disulfide bonds of keratin are reduced by the application of a reducing composition to the hair and in a second stage the said disulfide bonds of keratin are reformed by the application of an oxidizing composition, the improvement comprising in the said first stage applying to said hair, so as to reduce the disulfide bonds of said keratin, a cosmetic reducing composition consisting essentially of at least one N-(mercaptoalkyl).omega.-hydroxyalkylamide having the formula ##STR6## wherein n is 2 or 3, and
- m is 2 to 5 inclusive as a reducing agent in a cosmetically acceptable vehicle.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein said cosmetic reducing composition is permitted to remain in contact with the hair for a period of time ranging from 5 to 60 minutes.
- 3. A self-neutralizing composition for the permanent deformation of hair consisting essentially of, in combination, from 2 to 20 weight percent, based on the total weight of said composition, of at least one N-(mercaptoalkyl).omega.-hydroxyalkylamide having the formula ##STR7## wherein n is 2 or 3, and
- m is 2 to 5 inclusive, and at least one disulfide having the formula ##STR8## wherein n and m have the meanings given above, said disulfide being present in molar amounts ranging from 0.5 to 2.5 relative to the amount of N-(mercaptoalkyl).omega.-hydroxyalkylamide.
