Claims
- 1. An N,N'-bis-sulphonyl guanidine of the formula ##STR835## wherein R.sup.40 and R.sup.41 are identical or different and represent C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl (which may be substituted by fluorine and/or chlorine) or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy (which may be substituted by fluorine and/or chlorine);
- R.sup.4 represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl (which may be substituted by fluorine, chlorine, bromine, cyano, carboxyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-carbonyl, hydroxyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy), C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -cycloalkyl (which may be interrupted by a --SO.sub.2 -- bridge), C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkenyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkynyl, benzyl or phenylethyl (which may be substituted by fluorine, chlorine and/or methyl) or phenyl (which may be substituted by fluorine, chlorine, bromine, hydroxyl, cyano, nitro, amino, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, trifluoromethyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, trifluoromethoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio, trifluoromethylthio, aminosulphonyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxycarbonyl), or
- R.sup.4 represents the radical --O--R.sup.8,
- wherein
- R.sup.8 represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl (which may be substituted by fluorine, chlorine, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylsulphinyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylsulphonyl), C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkenyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkynyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -cycloalkyl, benzyl (which may be substituted by fluorine, chlorine or methyl) or phenyl (which may be substituted by fluorine, chlorine, bromine, nitro, cyano, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, trifluoromethyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, trifluoromethoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio or trifluoromethylthio); or
- R.sup.4 represents the radical ##STR836## wherein R.sup.9 represents hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl and
- R.sup.10 represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl (which may be substituted by fluorine, chlorine, bromine, cyano, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-carbonyl), C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkenyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkynyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -cycloalkyl (which may be interrupted by a --SO.sub.2 -- bridge), benzyl or phenylethyl (which may be substituted by fluorine, chlorine or methyl), phenyl (which may be substituted by fluorine, chlorine, bromine, nitro, cyano, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, trifluoromethyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, trifluoromethoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio or trifluoromethylthio), pyrimidyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl-carbonyl, benzoyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-carbonyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl-sulphonyl or phenylsulphonyl (which may be substituted by fluorine, chlorine, bromine or methyl) or R.sup.9 and R.sup.10 together represent C.sub.4 -C.sub.6 -alkane-diyl (which may be interrupted by an oxygen bridge); or
- R.sup.4 represents the radical ##STR837## wherein R.sup.11 represents hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl and
- R.sup.12 represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkenyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkynyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -cycloalkyl, benzyl or phenylethyl (which may be substituted by fluorine, chlorine or methyl) or phenyl (which may be substituted by fluorine, chlorine, bromine, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, trifluoromethyl, cyano, nitro, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy or trifluoromethoxy), or
- R.sup.11 and R.sup.12 together represent C.sub.4 -C.sub.6 -alkane-diyl; or
- R.sup.4 represents a five-membered or six-membered heterocyclic structure with a ring consisting of 1 to 3 nitrogen atoms and/or an oxygen or sulphur atom and optionally substituted by 1 or 2 fluorine, chlorine, bromine, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, trifluoromethyl, nitro, cyano or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy;
- R.sup.5 each independently represents alkyl having up to 6 carbon atoms which may be substituted by chlorine, fluorine or bromine, or represents the radical ##STR838## wherein R.sup.16 and R.sup.17 are identical or different and represent hydrogen, halogen, cyano, nitro, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl (which may be substituted by fluorine, chlorine, bromine, cyano, carboxyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-carbonyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylaminocarbonyl, di-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)-aminocarbonyl, hydroxyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, formyloxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl-carbonyloxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-carbonyloxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylaminocarbonyloxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylsulphinyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylsulphonyl, di-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)-aminosulphonyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -cycloalkyl or phenyl), C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 -alkenyl (which may be substituted by fluorine, chlorine, bromine, cyano, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-carbonyl, carboxyl or phenyl), C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy (which may be substituted by fluorine, chlorine, bromine, cyano, carboxyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-carbonyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylsulphinyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylsulphonyl), C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkenoxy (which may be substituted by fluorine, chlorine, bromine, cyano or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-carbonyl), C.sub. 3 -C.sub.6 -alkinoxy or the radical --S(O).sub.p --R.sup.18, wherein p represents the numbers zero, 1 or 2 and R.sup.18 represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl (which may be substituted by fluorine, chlorine, bromine, cyano or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy carbonyl), C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkenyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkinyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylamino or di(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)-amino, or
- R.sup.16 and R.sup.17 further represents phenyl or phenoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl-carbonylamino, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-carbonylamino, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylamino-carbonyl-amino, di-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)-amino-carbonylamino or the radical --CO--R.sup.19, wherein R.sup.19 represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkoxy, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkenoxy, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylamino or di-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)-amino (which may be substituted by fluorine and/or chlorine), or represent C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylsulphonyloxy, di-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)-aminosulphonylamino or the radical --CH.dbd.N--R.sup.20, wherein R.sup.20 represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl (which may be substituted by fluorine, chlorine, cyano, carboxyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-carbonyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylsulphinyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylsulphonyl), benzyl (which may be substituted by fluorine or chlorine), C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkenyl or C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkynyl (which may be substituted by fluorine or chlorine), phenyl (which may be substituted by fluorine, chlorine, bromine, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub. 4 -alkoxy, trifluoromethyl, trifluoromethoxy or trifluoromethylthio), C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkenoxy, C.sub.3 -Chd 6-alkinoxy, benzyloxy or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkoxy (which may be substituted by fluorine and/or chlorine), or R.sup.20 represents amino, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylamino, di-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl)-amino, phenylamino, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl-carbonylamino, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-carbonylamino or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl-sulphonylamino, or R.sup.20 represents phenylsulphonylamino (which may be substituted by fluorine, chlorine, bromine or methyl); or R.sup.5 represents the radical ##STR839## wherein R.sup.21 represents hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 -alkyl and
- R.sup.22 and R.sup.23 are identical or different and represent hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, nitro, cyano, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl (which may be substituted by fluorine and/or chlorine), C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy (which may be substituted by fluorine and/or chlorine), carboxyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-carbonyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylsulphonyl or di-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)-aminosulphonyl; or
- R.sup.5 represents the radical ##STR840## wherein R.sup.24 and R.sup.25 are identical or different and represent hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, nitro, cyano, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl (which may be substituted by fluorine and/or chlorine) or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy (which may be substituted by fluorine and/or chlorine); or
- R.sup.5 represents the radical ##STR841## wherein R.sup.26 and R.sup.27 are identical or different and represent hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, nitro, cyano, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl (which may be substituted by fluorine and/or chlorine), C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy (which may be substituted by fluorine and/or chlorine), C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylsulphinyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylsulphonyl (which may be substituted by fluorine and/or chlorine), and di-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)-aminosulphonyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-carbonyl; or
- R.sup.5 represents the radical ##STR842## wherein R.sup.28 and R.sup.29 are identical or different and represent hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl (which may be substituted by fluorine and/or bromine), C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy (which may be substituted by fluorine and/or chlorine), C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylsulphinyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylsulphonyl (which may be substituted by fluorine and/or chlorine) or di-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)-aminosulphonyl; or
- R.sup.5 represents the radical ##STR843## wherein R.sup.30 and R.sup.31 are identical or different and represent hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, cyano, nitro, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl (which may be substituted by fluorine and/or chlorine), C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy (which may be substituted by fluorine and/or chlorine), C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylsulphinyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylsulphonyl (which may be substituted by fluorine and/or chlorine), di-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)-aminosulphonyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-carbonyl), and
- Z represents oxygen, sulphur or the grouping N--Z.sup.1,

- Z.sup.1 represents hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl (which may be substituted by fluorine, chlorine, bromine or cyano), C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -cycloalkyl, benzyl, phenyl (which may be substituted by fluorine, chlorine, bromine or nitro), C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl-carbonyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-carbonyl or di-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl)-aminocarbonyl); and
- M represents hydrogen, one equivalent of sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, aluminum, manganese, iron, cobalt or nickel, an ammonium radical which may be substituted by C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl (which may be substituted by chlorine), C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkenyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkynyl and/or benzyl (which may be substituted by fluorine, chlorine or methyl), or--in the case in which M is bonded to the same nitrogen atom as the triazinyl radical--also represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl (which may be substituted by fluorine, chlorine or cyano), C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkenyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 -alkynyl or benzyl.
- 2. A compound according to claim 1, in which
- R.sup.5 represents the radical ##STR844## wherein R.sup.16 represents fluorine, chlorine, bromine, methyl, trifluoromethyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 -alkoxy, difluoromethoxy, trifluoromethoxy or C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 -alkoxy-carbonyl and
- R.sup.17 represents hydrogen;
- R.sup.40 represents methyl, methoxy or ethoxy and
- R.sup.41 represents methyl, methoxy or ethoxy;
- R.sup.4 represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.3 -C.sub.4 -alkenoxy, C.sub.3 -C.sub.4 -alkinoxy, benzyloxy or the radical ##STR845## R.sup.9 represents hydrogen or methyl and R.sup.10 represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 -alkyl, phenyl, acetyl, methoxycarbonyl, phenylsulphonyl or p-toluenesulphonyl; and
- M represents hydrogen, sodium or potassium or one equivalent of magnesium or calcium.
- 3. A compound according to claim 1, in which
- R.sup.5 represents the radical ##STR846## wherein R.sup.16 and R.sup.17 both represent hydrogen, or
- R.sup.16 represents chlorine, nitro, methyl, trifluoromethyl or methoxy and
- R.sup.17 represents fluorine, chlorine, bromine, methyl, trifluoromethyl, cyano, nitro or methoxy;
- R.sup.40 represents methyl, methoxy or ethoxy;
- R.sup.41 represents methyl, methoxy or ethoxy;
- R.sup.4 represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy, C.sub.3 -C.sub.4 -alkenoxy, C.sub.3 -C.sub.4 -alkinoxy, benzyloxy or the radical ##STR847## R.sup.9 represents hydrogen or methyl; and R.sup.10 represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 -alkyl, phenyl, acetyl, methoxycarbonyl, phenylsulphonyl or p-toluenesulphonyl.
- 4. A compound according to claim 1, in which
- R.sup.5 represents the radical ##STR848## R.sup.16 represents hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, nitro, methyl, trifluoromethyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 -alkoxy, difluoromethoxy, trifluoromethoxy or C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 -alkoxy;
- R.sup.17 represents hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, nitro, methyl, trifluoromethyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 -alkoxy, difluoromethoxy or trifluoromethoxy;
- R.sup.40 represents methyl, methoxy or ethoxy;
- R.sup.41 represents methyl, methoxy or ethoxy;
- R.sup.4 represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl which is optionally substituted by chlorine, cyano, C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 -alkoxycarbonyl, hydroxyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 -alkoxy, or represents C.sub.5 -C.sub.6 -cycloalkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.4 -alkenyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.4 -alkinyl or benzyl, or represents phenyl which is optionally substituted by fluorine, chlorine, bromine, nitro, cyano, aminosulphonyl, hydroxyl, amino, methyl, trifluoromethyl, methoxy, trifluoromethoxy, methylthio, trifluoromethylthio or C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 -alkoxy-carbonyl, or hydrogen.
- 5. A 1:1 acid adduct according to claim 1, with an acid selected from the group consisting of hydrogen fluoride, hydrogen chloride, hydrogen bromide, hydrogen iodide, sulphuric acid phosphoric acid, an alkanesulphonic acid having up to 4 carbon atoms and optionally substituted by fluorine or chlorine, or a benzene- or naphthalenesulphonic acid which is optionally substituted by fluorine, chlorine or methyl.
- 6. A compound according to claim 1 of the formula ##STR849## or a sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, aluminum, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel or ammonium salt thereof.
- 7. A compound according to claim 1 of the formula ##STR850## or a sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, aluminum, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel or ammonium salt thereof.
- 8. A compound according to claim 1 of the formula ##STR851## or a sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, aluminum, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel or ammonium salt thereof.
- 9. A compound according to claim 1 of the formula ##STR852## or a sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, aluminum, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel or ammonium salt thereof.
- 10. A compound according to claim 1 of the formula ##STR853## or a sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, aluminum, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel or ammonium salt thereof.
- 11. A compound according to claim 1 of the formula ##STR854## or a sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, aluminum, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel or ammonium salt thereof.
- 12. A compound according to claim 1 of the formula ##STR855## or a sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, aluminum, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel or ammonium salt thereof.
- 13. A compound according to claim 1 of the formula ##STR856## or a sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, aluminum, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel or ammonium salt thereof.
- 14. A compound according to claim 1 of the formula ##STR857## or a sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, aluminum, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel or ammonium salt thereof.
- 15. A compound according to claim 1 of the formula ##STR858## or a sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, aluminum, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel or ammonium salt thereof.
- 16. A plant growth regulating composition comprising a herbicidally or plant growth regulating effective amount of a compound or adduct according to claim in admixture with a diluent.
- 17. A method of controlling the growth of plants which comprises administering to such plants or to a habitat in which they are grown a plant growth regulating effective amount of a compound or adduct according to claim 1.
- 18. The method according to claim 17, wherein such compound is ##STR859##
