Claims
- 1. A thin film coating produced by physical vapor deposition, for filtering a selected wavelength of electromagnetic energy, said selected wavelength being within a range of wavelengths, said coating comprising:
- a dye selected from the group consisting of the porphyrins, metallo-phthalocyanines, rare-earth diphthalocyanines, cyanines, carbocyanines, merocyanines, squaryliums and tetracenes, wherein said dye strongly absorbs at said selected wavelength; and
- an inert organic polymer for diluting and holding said dye in a solid form, said polymer being substantially transparent to at least the majority of wavelengths in said range other than said selected wavelength, and wherein molecules of said dye are dispersed substantially randomly throughout said polymer.
- 2. The coating of claim 1 wherein said organic polymer is selected from the group consisting of the polyesters and polypropylenes.
- 3. The coating of claim 1 wherein said polymer is a polyester and said dye is chloroaluminumchlorophthalocyanine.
- 4. The coating of claim 1 wherein said polymer is a polyester and said dye is vanadyl phthalocyanine.
- 5. The coating of claim 1 wherein said polymer is a polyester and said dye is platinum octaethylporphine.
- 6. An absorption filter for filtering a selected wavelength of electromagnetic energy, said selected wavelength being within a range of wavelengths, said filter comprising:
- an evaporable dye, wherein said dye strongly absorbs at said selected wavelength; and
- an evaporable, inert organic polymer for diluting and holding said dye in a solid form, said polymer being substantially transparent to at least the majority of wavelengths in said range other than said selected wavelength, and wherein molecules of said dye are dispersed substantially randomly through said polymer.
- 7. A multilayered absorption filter for filtering out a plurality of selected wavelengths of electromagnetic energy, said selected wavelengths being within a range of wavelengths, said filter comprising:
- a plurality of dyes, each of said dyes being selected from the group consisting of the porphyrins, metallo-phthalocyanines, rare-earth diphthalocyanines, cyanines, carbocyanines, mercocyanines, squaryliums and tetracenes, wherein each of said wavelengths is strongly absorbed by at least one of said dyes; and
- an inert organic polyester, for diluting and holding said dyes in a multilayered solid form, wherein each of said dyes is held in a different layer than the other of said dyes;
- wherein molecules of said dyes are dispersed substantially randomly within their respective layers; and
- said polyester is substantially transparent to at least a majority of wavelengths in said range other than said selected wavelengths.
- 8. A multilayered absorption filter for filtering out a plurality of selected wavelengths of electromagnetic energy, said selected wavelengths being within a range of wavelengths, said filter comprising:
- a plurality of evaporable dyes, wherein each of said wavelengths is strongly absorbed by at least one of said dyes; and
- an evaporable, inert organic polyester, for diluting and holding said dyes in a multilayered solid form, wherein each of said dyes is held in a different layer than the other of said dyes;
- wherein molecules of said dyes are dispersed substantially randomly within their respective layers; and
- said polyester is substantially transparent to at least the majority of wavelengths in said rang other than said selected wavelengths.
