Claims
- 1. A thin film magnetic head for effecting at least a write operation of data into a magnetic recording medium, comprising:an air bearing surface that interacts with the magnetic recording medium, upper and lower magnetic poles overlaid one upon another with an electrical/magnetic insulating layer interposed therebetween, and a pair of grooves formed on said air bearing surface and machined by focused ion beam etching, wherein a width with respect to the direction of a track width of said upper pole or lower pole at said air bearing surface is defined by said pair of grooves.
- 2. A thin film magnetic head according to claim 1, whereinsaid pair of grooves are packed with a non-magnetic material.
- 3. A magnetic head, comprising:an air bearing surface that interacts with a magnetic recording medium, a lower shield layer, an upper shield layer that serves as a lower magnetic pole, a magnetoresistive sensor that is interposed between said lower shield layer and said upper shield layer, an upper magnetic pole, a gap layer formed between said upper magnetic pole and said lower magnetic pole, and a pair of grooves formed on said air bearing surface and on either side of said upper magnetic pole and lower magnetic pole, wherein said pair of grooves are machined by a focused ion beam.
- 4. A magnetic head according to claim 3, whereinsaid pair of grooves are packed with a non-magnetic material.
