Claims
- 1. A nasal cannula retention apparatus, comprising:
an article of headgear comprising;
a substantially circular headband portion having left and right sides; and a crown portion having left and right sides; said left side of said crown portion being connected to at least a portion of said left side of said headband portion; said right side of said crown portion being connected to at least a portion of said right side of said headband portion; a first cannula supply tube retainer comprising a block of rigid material having a proximal face, a distal face and a rounded upper surface between said proximal and distal faces;
said rounded upper surface having a recessed groove therein; said recessed groove being adapted to retain a portion of a cannula supply tube therein; said proximal face of said first cannula supply tube retainer being attached to said left side of said headband portion or said crown portion; and a second cannula supply tube retainer comprising a block of rigid material having a proximal face, a distal face and a rounded upper surface between said proximal and distal faces;
said rounded upper surface having a recessed groove therein; said recessed groove being adapted to retain a portion of a cannula supply tube therein; said proximal face of said second cannula supply tube retainer being attached to said right side of said headband portion or said crown portion.
- 2. The nasal cannula retention apparatus of claim 1:wherein said first cannula supply tube retainer is attached to said left side of said headband portion using a first fastener; and wherein said second cannula supply tube retainer is attached to said right side of said headband portion using a second fastener; and wherein said first and second fasteners are selected from the group including; adhesives, thread, snaps, hooks, loops, threaded fasteners, rivets and buckles.
- 3. The nasal cannula retention apparatus of claim 2, further comprising:
a plurality of fasteners attached to said headband portion at a junction between said left side and said right side of the headband portion;
said plurality of fasteners attached to said head band portion being detachably engageable between said left side and said right side of said headband portion.
- 4. The nasal cannula retention apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:
a first length of loop fastener material attached to said left and right sides of said headband portion; a first length of hook fastener material attached to said proximal face of said first cannula supply tube retainer;
said first length of hook fastener material being detachably engageable with said first length of loop fastener material; and a second length of hook fastener material attached to said proximal face of said second cannula supply tube retainer;
said second length of hook fastener material being detachably engageable with said first length of loop fastener material.
- 5. The nasal cannula retention apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:
a first length of hook fastener material attached to said left and right sides of said headband portion; a first length of loop fastener material attached to said proximal face of said first cannula supply tube retainer;
said first length of loop fastener material being detachably engageable with said first length of hook fastener material; and a second length of loop fastener material attached to said proximal face of said second cannula supply tube retainer;
said second length of loop fastener material being detachably engageable with said first length of hook fastener material.
- 6. The nasal cannula retention apparatus of claim 4, wherein said crown portion of said headgear comprises:
a crown band having left and right ends, and interior and exterior faces; a first length of hook fastener material attached to said interior face of said left end of said crown band; a second length of hook fastener material attached to said interior face of said right end of said crown band; a first length of loop fastener material attached to said exterior face of said left end of said crown band; and a second length of loop fastener material attached to said exterior face of said right end of said crown band; wherein said first and second lengths hook fastener material on said interior faces of said left and right ends of said crown band are detachably engageable with said first length of loop fastener material attached to said left and right sides of said headband portion; and wherein said first length of hook fastener material attached to said proximal face of said first cannula supply tube retainer is detachably engageable with either said first length of loop fastener material on said headband portion or said first length of loop fastener material attached to said exterior face of said left end of said crown band; and and wherein said second length of hook fastener material attached to said proximal face of said second cannula supply tube retainer is detachably engageable with either said first length of loop fastener material on said headband portion or said second length of loop fastener material attached to said exterior face of said right end of said crown band.
- 7. The nasal cannula retention apparatus of claim 4, wherein said first or second cannula supply tube retainer further comprises:
a substantially cylindrical dowel comprising a distal portion, a proximal portion, and a central portion; said distal portion and said proximal portion each having circular cross-sections having a first radius; said central portion having a circular cross-section having a second radius smaller than said first radius.
- 8. The nasal cannula retention apparatus of claim 4, wherein said first or second cannula supply tube retainer further comprises:
a substantially cylindrical dowel comprising a distal portion, a proximal portion, and a central portion;
said distal portion and said central portion each having circular cross-sections having a first radius; said proximal portion having a circular cross-section having a second radius smaller than said first radius.
- 9. The nasal cannula retention apparatus of claim 4, wherein said first or second cannula supply tube retainer further comprises:
a substantially triangular prism having a rounded apex and comprising a distal portion, a proximal portion, and a central portion; said distal portion and said proximal portion each having a first height, a first apex arc length and a first apex radius of curvature; said central portion having second height smaller than said first height; said central portion having second apex arc length smaller than said first apex arc length; said central portion having second apex radius of curvature smaller than said first apex radius of curvature.
- 10. The nasal cannula retention apparatus of claim 4, wherein said first or second cannula supply tube retainer further comprises:
a substantially triangular prism having a rounded apex and comprising a distal portion, a proximal portion, and a central portion; said distal portion and said central portion each having a first height, a first apex arc length and a first apex radius of curvature; said proximal portion having second height smaller than said first height; said proximal portion having second apex arc length smaller than said first apex arc length; said proximal portion having second apex radius of curvature smaller than said first apex radius of curvature.
- 11. The nasal cannula retention apparatus of claim 1, wherein said article of headgear is selected from the group comprising: baseball caps, golf caps, tennis caps, fishing hats, surgical caps, hospital caps, helmets, construction hard hats, straw hats, western hats, men's and women's dress hats, derbies, fedoras, bonnets, visor-less caps, berets, winter hats, and ski hats.
- 12. The nasal cannula retention apparatus of claim 4, wherein the material of construction of said left and right cannula supply tube retainers is selected from the group comprising: wood, plastic, metal, leather, rubber, cardboard, foam rubber, resilient Styrofoam, and polystyrene.
- 13. The nasal cannula retention apparatus of claim 4, wherein the materials of construction of said headband or said crown portion are elasticized.
- 14. A nasal cannula retention apparatus comprising: an article of headgear comprising;
a substantially circular headband portion having left and right sides;
said headband portion having a first length of loop fastener material attached to said left and right sides; a crown band having left and right ends, and interior and exterior faces;
said left end of said crown band having a first length of hook fastener material attached to said interior face; said right end of said crown band having a second length of hook fastener material attached to said interior face; said left end of said crown band having a first length of loop fastener material attached to said exterior face; said right end of said crown band having a second length of loop fastener material attached to said exterior face; a first substantially cylindrical dowel portion having a proximal face and a distal face and a rounded upper surface;
said rounded upper surface having a first recessed groove therein, adapted to retain a portion of a cannula supply tube therein; said proximal face of said first substantially cylindrical dowel portion having a first length of hook fastener material attached thereto; and a second substantially cylindrical dowel portion having a proximal face and a distal face and a rounded upper surface;
said rounded upper surface having a second recessed groove therein, adapted to retain a portion of a cannula supply tube therein; said proximal face of said second substantially cylindrical dowel portion having a second length of hook fastener material attached thereto; wherein said first and second lengths hook fastener material on said interior faces of said left and right ends of said crown band are detachably engageable with said first length of loop fastener material attached to said left and right sides of said headband portion; and wherein said first length of hook fastener material attached to said proximal face of said first cannula supply tube retainer is detachably engageable with either said first length of loop fastener material on said headband portion or said first length of loop fastener material attached to said exterior face of said left end of said crown band; and and wherein said second length of hook fastener material attached to said proximal face of said second cannula supply tube retainer is detachably engageable with either said first length of loop fastener material on said headband portion or said second length of loop fastener material attached to said exterior face of said right end of said crown band.
- 15. The nasal cannula retention apparatus of claim 14, wherein said first or second cannula supply tube retainer further comprises:
a distal portion, a proximal portion, and a central portion;
said distal portion and said proximal portion each having circular cross-sections having a first radius; said central portion having a circular cross-section having a second radius smaller than said first radius.
- 16. The nasal cannula retention apparatus of claim 14, wherein said first or second cannula supply tube retainer further comprises:
a distal portion, a proximal portion, and a central portion;
said distal portion and said central portion each having circular cross-sections having a first radius; said proximal portion having a circular cross-section having a second radius smaller than said first radius.
- 17. The nasal cannula retention apparatus of claim 1, wherein said article of headgear further comprises:
a visor attached to a front portions said headband portion. wherein each of said input voltage electrodes are on the an opposite major face of each input electroactive layer with respect to said major face to which said ground electrode is bonded; and wherein a first electroded major face of said first input portion is bonded to said first dielectric layer electroactive layer.
- 8. The piezoelectric transformer of claim 7, wherein said second input portion comprises:
a second plurality of input electroactive layers each having first and second opposing major faces and polarized such that upon application of a voltage across said first and second opposing major faces, each of said input electroactive layers in said second plurality of input electroactive layers deforms in said longitudinal direction parallel to each of said first and second opposing major faces; a second plurality of ground electrodes bonded between alternate input electroactive layers in said second plurality of input electroactive layers; and a second plurality of input voltage electrodes bonded between alternate input electroactive layers in said second plurality of input electroactive layers; wherein each of said input voltage electrodes are on the an opposite major face of each input electroactive layer with respect to said major face to which said ground electrode is bonded; and wherein a first electroded major face of said second input portion is bonded to said second dielectric layer electroactive layer.
- 9. The piezoelectric transformer of claim 7:wherein said first input portion has third and fourth minor faces; and wherein each of said ground electrodes in said first plurality of ground electrodes contacts said third minor face and extends toward and in proximity to said fourth minor face, but does not contact said fourth minor face; and wherein each of said input voltage electrodes in said first plurality of input voltage electrodes contacts said fourth minor face and extends toward and in proximity to said third minor face, but does not contact said third minor face.
- 10. The piezoelectric transformer of claim 9:wherein said second input portion has third and fourth minor faces; and wherein each of said ground electrodes in said second plurality of ground electrodes contacts said third minor face and extends toward and in proximity to said fourth minor face, but does not contact said fourth minor face; and wherein each of said input voltage electrodes in said second plurality of input voltage electrodes contacts said fourth minor face and extends toward and in proximity to said third minor face, but does not contact said third minor face. means for applying a first voltage across said first input electroactive layer, wherein application of said first voltage deforms said first input electroactive layer in a first direction parallel to said longitudinal direction; and means for applying a second voltage across said second input electroactive layer, wherein application of said first voltage deforms said second input electroactive layer in a second opposite direction parallel to said longitudinal direction.
- 9. The piezoelectric transformer of claim 7,
wherein said direction of polarization of said first input electroactive layer is opposite said direction of polarization of said second input electroactive layer; and wherein said first voltage and said second voltage have the same polarity.
- 10. The piezoelectric transformer of claim 7,
wherein said direction of polarization of said first input electroactive layer and said direction of polarization of said second input electroactive layer are the same; and wherein said first voltage and said second voltage have opposite polarities.
- 11. The piezoelectric transformer of claim 7, further comprising:
a third input electroactive layer having first and second opposing electroded major faces and polarized such that upon application of a voltage is across said first and second opposing electroded major faces, said third input electroactive layer deforms in said longitudinal direction parallel to said first and second opposing major faces;
said first electroded major face of said third input electroactive layer being bonded to said second electroded major face of said second input electroactive layer.
- 12. The piezoelectric transformer of claim 11, further comprising:
means for applying a first voltage of a first polarity across said first input electroactive layer and said second input electroactive layer, wherein application of said first voltage deforms said first input electroactive layer and said second input electroactive layer in a first direction parallel to said longitudinal direction; and means for applying a second voltage having a second polarity opposite said first polarity across said second input electroactive layer and said third input electroactive layer, wherein application of said second voltage deforms said second input electroactive layer and said third input electroactive layer in a second opposite direction parallel to said longitudinal direction.
- 13. The piezoelectric transformer of claim 11, further comprising:
a fourth input electroactive layer having first and second opposing electroded major faces and polarized such that upon application of a voltage is across said first and second opposing electroded major faces, said fourth input electroactive layer deforms in said longitudinal direction parallel to said first and second opposing major faces;
said first electroded major face of said fourth input electroactive layer being bonded to said second electroded major face of said third input electroactive layer.
- 14. The piezoelectric transformer of claim 11, further comprising:
means for applying a first voltage across said first input electroactive layer and said third input electroactive layer, wherein application of said first voltage deforms said first input electroactive layer and said third input electroactive layer in a first direction parallel to said longitudinal direction; and means for applying a second voltage across said second input electroactive layer and said fourth input electroactive layer, wherein application of said second voltage deforms said second input electroactive layer and said fourth input electroactive layer in a second opposite direction parallel to said longitudinal direction.
- 15. The piezoelectric transformer of claim 11,
wherein said direction of polarization of said first input electroactive layer and said third input electroactive layer are opposite said direction of polarization of said second input electroactive layer and said fourth input electroactive layer; and wherein said first voltage and said second voltage have the same polarity.
- 16. The piezoelectric transformer of claim 11,
wherein said direction of polarization of said first input electroactive layer, said second input electroactive layer, said third input electroactive layer and said fourth input electroactive layer are the same; and wherein said first voltage and said second voltage have opposite polarities.
- 17. The piezoelectric transformer of claim 6,
wherein said means for applying said first and second voltages comprise means for applying said first and second voltages at a resonant frequency of said piezoelectric transformer; and wherein a third distance between said first and second opposing minor faces of said first input electroactive layer comprises an integral multiple of half wavelengths of said resonant frequency of said piezoelectric transformer.
- 18. The piezoelectric transformer of claim 17,
wherein said first distance between said central electrode and said first or second electroded minor faces comprises an integral multiple of half wavelengths of said resonant frequency of said piezoelectric transformer.
- 19. The piezoelectric transformer of claim 6,
wherein said second distance between said first and second opposing major faces of said output electroactive layer is greater than a fourth distance between said first and second opposing major faces of said first input electroactive layer.
