Claims
- 1. A needle mounting system comprising:
a needle assembly comprised of:
a hub (10) that is attached to a needle, the hub having an interior cylindrical wall (20); a plurality of protrusions (30) extending radially inward from the interior cylindrical wall (20) of the hub; and a needle mount (100) comprising:
a cylindrical outer wall (110) having a top end; a plurality of grooves (120) disposed in the cylindrical outer wall, the grooves comprising:
a first portion (130) beginning at the top end of the cylindrical outer wall, the first portion defining a passage way that is generally parallel to the cylindrical axis of the cylindrical outer wall, the first portion of the groove being widest at the top end of the needle mount; and a second portion (150) that is oriented at an angle to the first portion.
- 2. The needle mounting system of claim 1, wherein the needle mount is an integral part of an ampoule.
- 3. The needle mounting system of claim 1, wherein the needle mount is part of an adapter top for an ampoule.
- 4. The needle mounting system of claim 1, wherein the needle mount is part of an injection device.
- 5. The needle mounting system of claim 1, further comprising threads (200) disposed on the cylindrical outer wall of the needle mount.
- 6. The needle mounting system of claim 1, further comprising a means (439) for tactilely determining whether the needle hub is securely mounted on the needle mount.
- 7. The needle mounting system of claim 1, further comprising a means (439) for audibly determining whether the needle hub is securely mounted on the needle mount.
- 8. The needle mount of claim 3, further comprising a means for tacitly determining that the needle is securely mounted.
- 9. The needle mount of claim 3, further comprising a means for audibly confirming that the needle assembly is securely mounted to the needle hub.
- 10. A needle assembly comprising:
a needle; and a hub that that is attached to the needle, the hub comprising:
an inner cylindrical hub wall; a plurality of protrusions extending radially inward from the hub wall.
- 11. The needle assembly of claim 10, wherein the protrusions are sized to fit between threads of a standard ampoule adapter top and wherein the protrusions are arranged on the inner hub wall to align between the threads of the standard adapter top, thereby allowing the needle assembly to be screwed onto the adapter top.
- 12. The needle assembly of claim 11, wherein the protrusions are sized to fit between standard insulin needle assemblies.
- 13. A needle mount comprising:
an outer cylindrical wall; a top end; and a plurality of grooves, the grooves comprising:
a first portion beginning at the top end, the first portion being widest at the top end, the first portion defining a passageway substantially parallel to the cylindrical axis of the outer wall; and a second portion that defines a passageway that lies at angle to the first portion.
- 14. The needle mount of claim 13, further comprising threads disposed on the outer cylindrical wall.
- 15. A needle mounting system comprising:
a needle assembly comprised a needle mounted in the hub (550), the hub comprising:
an inner cylindrical hub wall (600); a top portion; a cylindrical element (650) located within the, the inner cylindrical wall and having its own cylindrical outer wall (660) that faces the inner hub wall; a plurality of protrusions (650) extending radially outward from the outer wall of cylindrical element; a needle mount comprising:
an interior cylindrical surface; a plurality of locking elements (777) disposed on the interior wall of the needle mount; the locking elements arranged to form a plurality of first passageways (561) that have entrances and that are substantially parallel to the cylindrical axis of the interior mount wall, at least some of the locking elements (777) having a surface that is substantially perpendicular to the first passageway, thereby defining a second passageway (571).
- 16. The needle mounting system of claim 15, wherein the first passageways are widest at the entrance.
- 17. The needle mounting system of claim 15, wherein the protrusions comprise a triangular surface.
- 18. A needle assembly comprised of a hub and a needle mounted in the hub, the hub comprising:
an inner cylindrical hub wall; a top portion; a cylindrical mounting element located within the hub and extending from the top portion of the hub, the cylindrical mounting element having a cylindrical outer wall that faces the inner hub wall; and a plurality of protrusions extending radially outward from the cylindrical mounting element wall.
- 19. A needle mount comprising:
an interior cylindrical mount wall surface; a plurality of locking elements disposed on the interior mount wall surface; the locking elements arranged to form a plurality of first passageways that have entrances and that are substantially parallel to the cylindrical axis of the interior mount wall, at least some of the locking elements having a surface that is substantially perpendicular to the passageway having a needle and a cylindrical hub with an interior wall surface.
- 20. The needle mount of claim 19 further comprising:
an exterior cylindrical wall having threads disposed thereon.
- 21. A needle mounting system comprising:
a needle assembly having a hub and needle mounted to the hub; a needle mount for mounting the needle hub; a means for completely mounting the needle hub to the needle mount with only a partial rotation of the hub relative to the mount, the mounting means being located interior of the needle hub and on the interior of the needle mount.
- 22. A needle assembly comprising:
a needle; a hub in which the needle is mounted; and a means for securing the hub to a needle mount with only a partial rotation of the hub relative to the mount.
- 23. A needle mount comprising:
a top end; an outer wall; a mounting means for affixing a needle assembly to the top end of the needle mount with only a partial rotation of the needle mount; and a means for aligning the needle assembly on the mounting means.
- 24. A needle mount according to claim 23, further comprising a means for receiving a standard threaded needle hub.
- 25. A method for mounting a needle assembly to an injection device, the method comprising the steps of:
inserting a portion (3010) of the injection device (3000) into a magazine (3050) containing a plurality of needle assemblies; rotating the injection device (3000) relative to the needle less than a full revolution; removing the portion of the injection device from the magazine with the needle assembly fully attached to the device.
- 26. The method of claim 25, wherein the portion of the injection device is a distal portion of an ampoule that is mounted in the injection device.
- 27. The method of claim 25, wherein the portion of the injection device is not the most distal portion of the injection device.
- 28. The method of claim 27, wherein the injection device is not cylindrically shaped.
- 29. A method for removing a needle assembly from an injection device, the method comprising the steps of:
inserting at least a portion of the needle assembly into a magazine; and rotating the injection device relative to the magazine less than a full revolution to remove the needle assembly.
- 30. The method of claim 29, wherein the needle assembly may be reattached to the injection device.
- 31. The method of claim 29, wherein the needle assembly may not be reattached to the injection device.
- 32. A needle mounting system comprising:
a needle hub comprising an interior cylindrical wall with a top and bottom and a plurality of grooves on the interior cylindrical wall, the grooves beginning at the bottom of the interior cylindrical wall and having entrances at the bottom of the interior wall, the grooves being widest at their entrances; and a needle mount comprising an exterior cylindrical wall and a plurality of protrusions extending outward from the exterior wall.
- 33. The needle mounting system of claim 32, wherein the protrusions on the needle mount are sized to fit between standard female threads of a standard needle hub and are oriented so that a standard needle hub can be screwed onto the mount.
- 34. The needle mounting system of claim 33, wherein the interior wall of the needle hub is threaded.
