Claims
- 1. A method for designing a negative pressure slider for use in a storage device including a rotatable storage medium having an inner diameter (ID) and an outer diameter (OD), said method comprising the steps of:
- for a first slider having one negative pressure pocket of a first width and one leading edge pocket of a second width, determining first ID and OD fly heights at a predetermined RPM;
- for a second slider having a leading edge pocket of a third width and otherwise having dimensions identical to the first slider, determining second ID and OD fly heights at the predetermined RPM; and
- determining a point of intersection between a first curve defined by the first ID fly height versus a ratio of the second width to the first width, and the second ID fly height versus a ratio of the third width to the first width, and a second curve defined by first OD fly height versus a ratio of the second width to the first width, and the second OD fly height versus a ratio of the third width to the first width;
- the point of intersection of the first and second curves identifying a leading edge pocket width for providing optimal fly height performance for a slider having dimensions otherwise identical to the first and second sliders.
- 2. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of producing a third slider having the identified leading edge pocket width and having dimensions otherwise identical to the first and second sliders.
- 3. A method for designing a negative pressure slider for use in a storage device including a rotatable storage medium having an inner diameter (ID) and an outer diameter (OD), said method comprising the steps of:
- for each of a plurality of sliders, each slider having a leading edge pocket of a unique width and otherwise having identical dimensions including a negative pressure pocket of a fixed width, determining first ID and OD fly heights at a predetermined RPM;
- determining a point of intersection of a first curve defined by a first set of coordinates, each coordinate representing the ID fly height versus a ratio of the unique pocket width to the fixed pocket width of a respective one of the sliders, and a second curve defined by a second set of coordinates, each coordinate representing the OD fly height versus a ratio of the unique pocket width to the fixed pocket width of a respective one of the sliders;
- the point of intersection of the first and second curves identifying a leading edge pocket width for providing optimal fly height performance for a slider having dimensions otherwise identical to the plurality of sliders.
- 4. The method of claim 3, further comprising the step of producing a slider having a negative pressure pocket of the first fixed dimensions, and a leading edge pocket having a width which provides the optimal pocket width ratio and otherwise having the fixed second dimensions.
