Claims
- 1. A matrix liquid crystal display with high temperature and UV-stability comprisingtwo plane parallel support plates which together with a frame form a cell of thickness d, wherein said thickness d is 3-7 μm, integrated non-linear elements for switching individual picture elements on said support plates, and a nematic liquid crystal mixture which is present in said cell, has a positive dielectric aniostropy and a birefringence Δn of from 0.12-0.20, said display being operated in the second or a higher transmission minimum of the Gooch-Tarry curve by selection of d·Δn,wherein the ratio of voltage holding ratio HR20 after 20 hours exposure to UV-light (280-400 nm, 12 mW/CM2) and voltage holding ratio HR0 before exposure to UV-light is ≧98%; and said nematic liquid crystal mixture comprises one or more compounds of the formula wherein n is 1-10; and X is Cl, CF3, OCF3.
- 2. A display according to claim 1, wherein the birefringence, Δn, of said nematic liquid crystal mixture is from 0.13 to 0.18.
- 3. A display according to claim 1, wherein the nematic liquid crystal mixture further comprises one or more compounds of the formulae III-IX: whereinn is 1-7, and X is F, Cl, CF3, OCF3 or OCHF2.
- 4. A display according to claim 1, wherein the nematic liquid crystal mixture further comprises one or more compounds of the formula I: whereinR is an alkyl or alkoxy of 1 to 10 carbon atoms r is 0 or 1, X is F, Cl, CF3, OCF3 or OCHF2, L, Y and Z are each H or F, and one of Q1 and Q2 is 1,4-phenylene or 3-fluoro-1,4-phenylene and the other is a single bond.
- 5. A matrix liquid crystal display with high temperature and UV-stability comprisingtwo plane parallel support plates which together with a frame form a cell of thickness d, integrated non-linear elements for switching individual picture elements on said support plates, and a nematic liquid crystal mixture which is present in said cell, has a positive dielectric aniostropy and a birefringence Δn, said display being operated in the second or a higher transmission minimum of the Gooch-Tarry curve by selection of d·Δn,wherein the ratio of voltage holding ratio HR20 after 20 hours exposure to UV-light (280-400 nm, 12 mW/CM2) and voltage holding ratio HR0 before exposure to UV-light is ≧98%; and said liquid comprises one or more compounds of the formula whereinn is 1-10; and X is Cl, CF3, OCF3 or OCHF2, and further comprises one or more compounds of the formula I wherein R is alkyl or alkoxy of 1 to 10 carbon atoms; r is 0 or 1; X is F, Cl, CF3, OCF3 or OCHF2; L, Y and Z are H or F; and one of Q1 and Q2 is 3-fluoro-1,4-phenylene or 1,4-phenylene; and the other of Q1 and Q2 is a single bond.
- 6. A display according to claim 5, wherein the birefringence, Δn, of said nematic liquid crystal mixture is from 0.12 to 0.20.
