Claims
- 1. A fluorescent lamp providing white light comprising:
- a light transmissive lamp tube having an enclosed volume, and one or more electrodes in contact with the enclosed volume;
- a substantially pure neon fill with no mercury, enclosed in the enclosed volume, emitting an ultraviolet light and a visible light with color coordinates (P,Q); and
- a phosphor coating having a visible light emission with color coordinates (X,Y) excited by the neon ultraviolet emission; and the phosphor during lamp operation has a relative intensity I of the induced phosphor visible emission compared to the intensity of the neon visible emission and the combined neon visible light and the phosphor visible light has a color coordinate determined by the formula I*(X,Y)+(P,Q) that falls within the white region defined by the color coordinates {(0.310, 0.282); (0.310, 0.348); (0.453, 0.440); (0.500, 0.440); (0.500, 0.380) and (0.440, 0.380)}.
- 2. The lamp in claim 1, operated by providing pulsed power to the enclosed gas fill, wherein the pulse has at least a first portion prior in time and a second portion later in time, the first portion having a pulse width selected to excite ultraviolet photon emission from the neon, and the second portion having a pulse width selected to enhance the additional light output from the neon, while applying sufficient voltage and current to cause ionization of the lamp fill.
- 3. The lamp in claim 1, having a phosphor excitable by neon ultraviolet emission to emit visible light with a color coordinate within the region defined by the color coordinates of (0.310, 0.282); (0.310, 0.348); (0.453, 0.440); (0.500, 0.440); (0.500, 0.380) and (0.440, 0.380) the phosphor being coated on the lamp to a depth to such that approximately one half of the visible light emitted from the lamp is emitted by the phosphor, and one half of the visible light emitted by the lamp is emitted by the neon.
- 4. The lamp in claim 1, wherein the neon fill has an emission with a color coordinate of about (0.68,0.28).
- 5. A fluorescent lamp providing white light comprising:
- a light transmissive lamp tube having an enclosed volume, and one or more electrodes in contact with the enclosed volume;
- a substantially pure neon fill with no mercury, enclosed in the enclosed volume, emitting ultraviolet light and visible light having color coordinates (P,Q);
- a phosphor coating responsive to ultraviolet light emission from the neon to emit a visible light having color coordinates (X,Y) within the region defined by the color coordinates {(0.003, 0.238), (0.003, 0.370), (0.283, 0.554), (0.377, 0.554), (0.377, 0.434), (0.257, 0.434)}, and the phosphor during lamp operation provides a visible light emission that has a relative intensity of I compared to the intensity of the, neon visible emission, and the combined neon visible light emission and the phosphor visible light emissions yield a color coordinate determined by the formula I*(X,Y)+(P,Q) that falls within the white region defined by the color coordinates {(0.310, 0.282); (0.310, 0.348); (0.453, 0.440); (0.500, 0.440); (0.500, 0.380) and (0.440, 0.380)}.
