Claims
- 1. A modular electronic chassis system with rack mounted electronic modules, comprising:
at least one circuit board providing a first-module-receiving-location and a second-module-receiving-location; a first plug-in module having a housing with a first-elongated-housing-portion and a second-housing-portion, the second-housing-portion being detachably engaged with the first-module-receiving-location of the at least one circuit board; and a second plug-in module being detachably engaged with the second-module-receiving-location of the at least one circuit board and configured to occupy at least a portion of a space defined on a first side by at least a part of the second-housing-portion and defined on a second side by at least a part of the first-elongated-housing-portion of the first plug-in module, wherein the first plug-in module and the second plug-in module are nested.
- 2. The system of claim 1, further comprising an electronic chassis substantially enclosing the first and second plug-in modules.
- 3. The system of claim 2, wherein when the first and second plug-in modules are viewed along a chassis axis, the first and second plug-in modules substantially fill a cross-sectional area defined by the electronic chassis.
- 4. The system of claim 3, wherein when the first and second plug-in modules are viewed along the chassis axis, the first and second plug-in modules substantially fill at least seventy-five (75) percent of the cross-sectional area defined by the electronic chassis.
- 5. The system of claim 3, wherein when the first and second plug-in modules are viewed along the chassis axis, the first and second plug-in modules substantially fill at least eighty-five (85) percent of the cross-sectional area defined by the electronic chassis.
- 6. The system of claim 3, wherein when the first and second plug-in modules are viewed along the chassis axis, the first and second plug-in modules substantially fill at least ninety-five (95) percent of the cross-sectional area defined by the electronic chassis.
- 7. The system of claim 1, wherein the first plug-in module has a first width, as measured along a chassis axis, and the second plug-in module has a second width, as measured along the chassis axis, different from the first width.
- 8. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one circuit board comprises a single circuit board.
- 9. The system of claim 8, wherein the single circuit board has opposing major surfaces each having at least one surface mount assembly disposed thereon.
- 10. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one circuit board comprises two circuit boards pinned together.
- 11. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one circuit board comprises two circuit boards wired together.
- 12. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one circuit board comprises a rigid flex circuit board.
- 13. The system of claim 1, wherein the first plug-in module and the second plug-in module are disposed on a single major surface of a single circuit board.
- 14. The system of claim 13, further comprising an electronic chassis substantially enclosing the first and second plug-in modules, wherein the single circuit board is disposed adjacent a side of the electronic chassis.
- 15. A backplane for receiving plug-in modules, comprising:
a first circuit board having a first perimeter defining a first plane and including at least a first electrical connector; a second circuit board having a second perimeter defining a second plane and including at least a second electrical connector; a flexible member connecting the first circuit board to the second circuit board and establishing electrical communication therebetween; and the backplane is operational in a first position, in which the first circuit board is positioned so that the first plane is generally co-planar with the second plane, a second position, in which the first circuit board is positioned so that the first plane is spaced from and generally parallel to the second plane and the first perimeter extends over at least a portion of the second perimeter when viewing the first circuit board along an axis generally perpendicular to the first circuit board, and any position between the first and second positions.
- 16. The backplane of claim 15, wherein the flexible member comprises flexible printed circuit material.
- 17. The backplane of claim 16, wherein the first circuit board, the second circuit board, and the flexible member are formed as one piece and include a printed circuit thereon.
- 18. The backplane of claim 15, wherein the flexible member is attached along an edge of the first perimeter of the first circuit board and is attached along an edge of the second perimeter of the second circuit board.
- 19. The backplane of claim 15, wherein the flexible member is bent through an arc of approximately one hundred eighty (180) degrees.
- 20. The backplane of claim 19, wherein the first electrical connector extends from the first circuit board in a first direction, generally away from the second circuit board, and the second electrical connector extends from the second circuit board in a second direction, generally opposite from the first direction.
- 21. A plug-in module for engaging a computer backplane, comprising: a housing having a first-elongated-housing-portion with a first end, a second end, and a longitudinal axis and having a second-housing-portion extending from the first-elongated-housing-portion generally perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis, the second-housing-portion disposed proximate to the first end of the first-elongated-housing-portion and having a connector surface oriented generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis and facing generally toward the second end of the first-elongated-housing-portion; and
a backplane connector disposed on the connector surface of the second-housing-portion.
- 22. The plug-in module of claim 21, wherein the second-housing-portion is spaced from the first end of the first-elongated-housing-portion.
- 23. A modular electronic chassis system with rack mounted electronic modules, comprising:
an electronic chassis; a backplane for receiving at least a first and second plug-in module located in the electronic chassis, the backplane comprising:
a first circuit board having a first perimeter defining a first plane and including at least a first electrical connector; a second circuit board having a second perimeter defining a second plane and including at least a second electrical connector; and a flexible member connecting the first circuit board to the second circuit board to establish electrical communication therebetween, the flexible member being bent between approximately eighty (80) degrees and approximately one hundred ninety (190) degrees, the first plug-in module having a housing with a first-elongated-housing-portion and a second-housing-portion, the second-housing-portion including a backplane connector engaged with the first electrical connector of the backplane, the first-elongated-housing-portion extending beyond the backplane and past the second electrical connector; and the second plug-in module being engaged with the second electrical connector and configured to occupy at least a portion of a space defined on a first side by the second circuit board and defined on a second side by a portion of the first-elongated-housing-portion of the first plug-in module that extends past the second electrical connector.
- 24. The system of claim 23, wherein the first-elongated-housing-portion has a first end, a second end, and a longitudinal axis, the second-housing-portion extending from the first-elongated-housing-portion generally perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis, the second-housing-portion being disposed proximate to the first end of the first-elongated-housing-member and having a connector surface oriented generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis and facing generally toward the second end of the first elongated housing.
- 25. The system of claim 24, wherein the backplane connector is located on the connector surface of the second-housing-portion.
- 26. The system of claim 24, wherein the electronic chassis includes a generally rectilinear interior, wherein the backplane is medially positioned in the interior and the first plug-in module and the second plug-in module are attached to the backplane, the second-housing-portion of the first plug-in module being positioned to form, in combination with a side of the interior of the electronic chassis, a channel between the first plug-in module and the side of the interior to allow air flow between the backplane and outside the electronic chassis.
- 27. The system of claim 23, wherein the flexible member comprises printed circuit material.
- 28. The system of claim 27, wherein the flexible member is attached to an edge of the first perimeter of the first circuit board and is attached to an edge of the second perimeter of the second circuit board.
- 29. The system of claim 23, wherein the flexible member is bent through an arc between approximately one hundred sixty (160) degrees and one hundred eighty-five (185) degrees.
- 30. A modular electronic chassis system with rack mounted electronic modules, comprising:
an electronics-rack-housing; a backplane located in the electronics-rack-housing and configured to receive plug-in modules, the backplane comprising:
a first circuit board having a first perimeter defining a first plane and including at least a first electrical connector; a second circuit board having a second perimeter defining a second plane and including at least a second electrical connector; a flexible member connecting the first circuit board to the second circuit board and establishing electrical communication therebetween; and wherein the backplane is operational in each one of a first position, in which the first circuit board is positioned so that the first plane is generally co-planar with the second plane, and a second position, in which the first circuit board is positioned so that the first plane is spaced from and generally parallel to the second plane and the first perimeter extends over at least a portion of the second perimeter when viewing the first circuit board along an axis generally perpendicular to the first circuit board.
- 31. The system of claim 30 further comprising:
a first plug-in module having a housing with a first-elongated-housing-portion and a second-housing-portion, the second-housing-portion including a backplane connector engaged with the first electrical connector of the backplane, the first-elongated-housing-portion extending beyond the backplane and past the second electrical connector; and a second plug-in module engaged with the second electrical connector and configured to occupy at least a portion of a space defined on a first side by the second circuit board and defined on a second side by a portion of the first-elongated-housing-portion of the first plug-in module that extends past the second electrical connector, wherein the backplane is operational in one position, in which the first circuit board is positioned so that the first plane is generally perpendicular to the second plane, and another position, in which the first circuit board is positioned so that the first plane is spaced from and generally parallel to the second plane and the first perimeter extends over a least a portion of the second perimeter when viewing the first circuit board along an axis generally perpendicular to the first circuit board.
- 32. The system of claim 31, wherein the backplane is medially positioned in the electronics-rack-housing.
- 33. The system of claim 32, wherein the second-housing-portion of the first plug-in module forms, in combination with the electronics-rack-housing, a channel to allow air to flow between outside the electronics-rack-housing and the backplane.
- 34. The system of claim 30, wherein the flexible member is bent through an arc of approximately one hundred eighty (180) degrees.
- 35. The system of claim 34, wherein the first electrical connector extends from the first circuit board in a first direction, generally away from the second circuit board, and the second electrical connector extends from the second circuit board in a second direction, generally opposite from the first direction.
- 36. The system of claim 30 wherein the chassis has a generally rectilinear interior.
- 37. The system of claim 34 further comprising:
a first plug-in module engaged with the first electrical connector and having an L-shape; and a second plug-in module engaged with the at least a second electrical connector and having a rectilinear shape.
- 38. The system of claim 31 wherein the chassis includes at least front and side openings to access any one of the first plug-in module aand the second plug-in module.
