Claims
- 1. Isolated hair follicle stem cells.
- 2. The isolated hair follicle stem cells defined in claim 1,
wherein the cells express nestin.
- 3. A method of isolating hair follicle stem cells defined in claim 1, comprising isolating hair follicle stem cells from skin containing hair follicles.
- 4. The method of isolating hair follicle stem cells as in claim 3,
wherein the skin is excised; and the isolating step further comprises
isolating nestin expressing cells from the hair follicle thereby isolating the hair follicle stem cells.
- 5. The method of claim 3,
wherein the skin is telogen skin.
- 6. The method of claim 3 further comprising
culturing the hair follicle stem cells in culture media to produce differentiated cells.
- 7. The method of claim 3, wherein the culture media comprises FBS, BDNF, PDGF or CNTF.
- 8. The method of claim 6wherein the differentiated cells are neurons, astrocytes, smooth muscle cells, or adipocytes.
- 9. The method of claim 4wherein the nestin is linked to green fluorescent protein.
- 10. A method of treating a disorder comprising
implanting the stem cells of claim 1 or cells differentiated therefrom into a mammal exhibiting the disorder.
- 11. The method of claim 10wherein the disorder is a neurological or degenerative disorder.
- 12. The method of claim 10wherein the implanting step further comprises systemic injection of the stem cells into the mammal.
- 13. The method of claim 10wherein the implanting step further comprises directly injecting the cells into an organ or tissue of the mammal.
- 14. The method of claim 13wherein the organ or tissue is the brain, liver or cardiovascular tissue.
- 15. The method of claim 10wherein the disorder is selected from the group consisting of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, age-related memory loss, hair loss, bums, aged skin, and skin replacement.
- 16. The method of claim 10wherein the stem cells are autologous.
- 17. The method of claim 10wherein the stem cells are heterologous.
- 18. Differentiated cells from the isolated hair follicle stem cells of claim 1.
- 19. The differentiated cells of claim 18 that have been differentiated in vitro.
