Claims
- 1. A method in a mobile wireless communication device, the method comprising:
conducting a packet data interchange; sending a reselection communication to a network during the packet data interchange; receiving, from the network in response to the reselection communication, a new cell assignment.
- 2. The method of claim 1, receiving the new cell assignment includes receiving a cell index.
- 3. The method of claim 1, receiving the new cell assignment includes receiving a new cell assignment within a current routing area.
- 4. The method of claim 1, sending the reselection communication to the network includes sending an indication that cell reselection is imminent.
- 5. The method of claim 4, determining when reselection is imminent using a reselection predictor on the mobile wireless communication device.
- 6. The method of claim 1, sending the reselection communication to the network in a measurement report.
- 7. The method of claim 1, reselecting to the new cell assigned and continuing the packet data interchange on the new cell.
- 8. The method of claim 1, predicting when reselection will occur with a reselection predictor on the mobile wireless communication device.
- 9. The method of claim 1, predicting when reselection will occur by approximating a curve to several temporally separated signal strength measurements, and estimating when the curve will cross a threshold corresponding to reselection.
- 10. A method in a mobile wireless communication device, the method comprising:
sending a reselection communication to a network; receiving, from the network in response to the reselection communication, at least one of a new cell assignment in any routing area, a new cell assignment in a current routing area, a packet data termination communication.
- 11. The method of claim 10, sending the reselection communication to the network during a packet data interchange, reselecting to an assigned cell in response to receiving a new cell assignment.
- 12. The method of claim 10, sending reselection communication to a network during a packet data interchange, terminating the packet data interchange in response to receiving a packet data termination instruction.
- 13. The method of claim 10, sending the reselection communication to the network includes sending an indication that reselection is imminent.
- 14. The method of claim 13, determining when reselection is imminent using a reselection predictor on the mobile wireless communication device.
- 15. The method of claim 10, sending the reselection communication to the network in a measurement report.
- 16. A method in a mobile wireless communication network, the method comprising:
receiving a reselection communication from a mobile station; sending, in response to the reselection communication from the mobile station, at least one of a new cell assignment in any routing area, a new cell assignment in a current routing area, a packet data termination communication.
- 17. A method in a mobile wireless communication device, the method comprising:
sending a network controlled/assisted reselection mode support communication to a network; receiving a reselection control communication from the network in response to sending the network controlled/assisted reselection mode support communication to the network; reselecting based on the reselection control communication from the network.
- 18. The method of claim 17, disabling reselection in the mobile wireless communications device based on adjacent cell information in response to the reselection control communication from the network.
- 19. The method of claim 17, disabling a cell ranking parameter on the mobile wireless communication device in response to receiving the reselection control communication.
- 20. The method of claim 17, disabling a C32 criterion parameter on the mobile wireless communication device in response to receiving the reselection control communication.
- 21. The method of claim 17, reselecting using a reselection predictor on the mobile wireless communication device when a PBCCH is present in a serving cell.
- 22. The method of claim 17, receiving a new reselection threshold, reselecting using a reselection predictor on the mobile wireless communication device after receiving new reselection threshold in the absence of a PBCCH in a serving cell.
- 23. The method of claim 17, reselecting using a default warning interval upon satisfying a reselection threshold in the absence of a PBCCH in a serving cell and in the absence of receipt of a new reselection threshold from the network.
- 24. A method in a mobile wireless communication network, the method comprising:
receiving a network reselection mode support communication to a network; sending a reselection control communication to the mobile station in response to receiving the network reselection mode support communication from the mobile station, the reselection control communication instructing the mobile wireless communications device to disable reselection based on adjacent cell information.
- 25. The method of claim 24, sending a reselection control communication includes instructing the mobile station to disable a cell ranking parameter on the mobile wireless communication device in response to receiving the reselection control communication.
- 26. A wireless communications uplink message for transmission from a mobile wireless communication device to a wireless communications network, the message comprising:
at least one reselection bit, a state of the reselection bit indicating that mobile wireless communications device reselection is imminent.
- 27. The wireless communications uplink message of claim 26 is a measurement report.
- 28. The wireless communications uplink message of claim 26, at least one state of the reselection bit indicating when reselection is predicted.
- 29. A method in a mobile wireless communications device, the method comprising:
obtaining signal strength measurements; computing reselection criteria based upon sets of functions that approximate corresponding sets of values based upon the signal strength measurements; predicting when reselection is imminent based upon the reselection criteria and at least some of the coefficients of the functions that approximate the corresponding sets of values.
- 30. The method of claim 29,
estimating when reselection criteria will cross a reselection threshold sending a reselection communication to a network when reseletcoin is imminent; receiving, from the network in response to the reselection communication a new cell assignment.
