Claims
- 1. A method of operating a mobile station to receive service from a preferred cellular/PCS service provider when the mobile station is not in its home service area, the method comprising the steps of:sending a message to a base station operated by a current remote service provider, the message including an identification of the mobile station; and receiving a return message from the base station with a redirection record and parameters if the current remote service provider is not the preferred cellular/PCS service provider, said redirection record including one of at least two instructions for execution by the mobile station, comprising one of: instructions to attempt to establish communication with a different and preferred service provider but if that cannot be done, attempt to reestablish communication with the current remote service provider; and instructions to attempt to establish communication with a different and preferred service provider and if that cannot be done, attempt to establish communication with any other service provider except the current remote service provider.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the message sent by the mobile station comprises an authentication request message, a registration notification message or a qualification request message.
- 3. The method of claim 1, wherein the return message includes parameters selected by the mobile station's home area service provider using Network Directed System Selection operations.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the return message comprises a Service Redirection Message.
- 5. The method of claim 1, wherein the redirection record includes a RETURN_IF_FAIL parameter.
- 6. The method of claim 5, wherein:if the RETURN_IF_FAIL parameter is set to a first value, the mobile station attempts to establish communication with a different and preferred service provider but if that cannot be done, attempts to reestablishes communication with the current remote service provider; and if the RETURN_IF_FAIL parameter is set to a second value, the mobile station attempts to establish communication with a different and preferred service provider and if that cannot be done, attempts to establish communication with any other service provider except the current remote service provider.
- 7. The method of claim 1, wherein the mobile station sends the message to the base station based upon a determination that it has entered the coverage area of the current remote service provider.
- 8. The method of claim 7, wherein the mobile station determines that it has entered the coverage area of the current remote service provider based upon receipt of an Overhead Message Train from the base station.
- 9. The method of claim 1, wherein the return message identifies the different and preferred service provider.
- 10. A method of operating a mobile station to receive service from a preferred cellular/PCS service provider when the mobile station is not in its home service area, the method comprising the steps of:sending a message to a base station operated by a current remote service provider, the message including an identification of the mobile station and a request to register or originate a call; and receiving a return message from the base station with a redirection record and parameters if the current remote service provider is not the preferred cellular/PCS service provider, said redirection record including one of at least two instructions for execution by the mobile station, comprising one of: instructions to attempt to establish communication with a different and preferred service provider but if that cannot be done, attempt to reestablish communication with the current remote service provider; and instructions to attempt to establish communication with a different and preferred service provider and if that cannot be done, attempt to establish communication with any other service provider except the current remote service provider.
- 11. The method of claim 10, wherein the return message includes parameters selected by the mobile station's home area service provider using Network Directed System Selection operations.
- 12. The method of claim 10, wherein the return message comprises a Service Redirection Message.
- 13. The method of claim 10, wherein the redirection record includes a RETURN_IF_FAIL parameter.
- 14. The method of claim 13, wherein:if the RETURN_IF_FAIL parameter is set to a first value, the mobile station attempts to establish communication with a different and preferred service provider but if that cannot be done, attempts to reestablishes communication with the current remote service provider; and if the RETURN_IF_FAIL parameter is set to a second value, the mobile station attempts to establish communication with a different and preferred service provider and if that cannot be done, attempts to establish communication with any other service provider except the current remote service provider.
- 15. The method of claim 10, wherein the return message identifies the different and preferred service provider.
- 16. A method of operating a mobile station to receive service from a preferred cellular/PCS service provider when the mobile station is not in its home service area, the method comprising the steps of:sending a message to a base station operated by a current remote service provider, the message including an identification of the mobile station and a request for service; and receiving a return message from the base station with a redirection record and parameters if the current remote service provider is not the preferred cellular/PCS service provider, said redirection record including one of at least two instructions for execution by the mobile station, comprising one of: instructions to attempt to establish communication with a different and preferred service provider but if that cannot be done, attempt to reestablish communication with the current remote service provider; and instructions to attempt to establish communication with a different and preferred service provider and if that cannot be done, attempt to establish communication with any other service provider except the current remote service provider.
- 17. The method of claim 16, wherein the return message includes parameters selected by the mobile station's home area service provider using Network Directed System Selection operations.
- 18. The method of claim 17, wherein the return message comprises a Service Redirection Message.
- 19. The method of claim 17, wherein the redirection record includes a RETURN_IF_FAIL parameter.
- 20. The method of claim 19, wherein:if the RETURN_IF_FAIL parameter is set to a first value, the mobile station attempts to establish communication with a different and preferred service provider but if that cannot be done, attempts to reestablishes communication with the current remote service provider; and if the RETURN_IF_FAIL parameter is set to a second value, the mobile station attempts to establish communication with a different and preferred service provider and if that cannot be done, attempts to establish communication with any other service provider except the current remote service provider.
- 21. The method of claim 16, wherein the return message identifies the different and preferred service provider.
