Claims
- 1. A method for monitoring the condition of a twisted pair line having a first end and a second end comprising the steps of:
- applying to said first end of said twisted pair line, alternately, a first DC current having a first direction and a second DC current having a second direction opposite to said first direction, said first and second currents alternating at rate slow enough so as to allow said twisted pair line to be stable in response to said first current and said second current;
- applying to said second end of said twisted pair line concurrent with applying to said first end of said twisted pair line said first and said second DC currents, a third DC current equal in value and direction to said first DC current and a fourth DC currents equal in value and direction to said second DC current, said third and fourth DC currents alternating on said twisted pair line at a rate slow enough to permit said twisted pair line to become stable in response to said first and second DC currents, said alternating of said third and fourth DC currents being asynchronous with said alternating second DC currents: and
- comparing the potential on said twisted pair line to a predetermined potential, said predetermined potential being selected such that a determination is made of the condition of said twisted pair line including a determination of said twisted pair line being open, crossed, short circuited, or terminated in a predetermined resistance value.
- 2. An apparatus for monitoring and testing a twisted pair line having a first end and a second end comprising:
- first current means coupled to said first end of said twisted pair line for providing a first DC current and a second DC current, said first current means alternating said first current and said second current;
- second current means coupled to said second end of said twisted pair line for providing a third DC current and a fourth DC current, said second current means alternating said third and said fourth current while said first current means alternates said first and said second current: and
- comparator means for comparing the potential on said twisted pair line to a predetermined potential, said predetermined potential being selected such that a determination is made by said comparator means of said twisted pair line being intact and terminated in a predetermined resistance value.
- 3. The apparatus defined by claim 2 including a meter coupled to said line for providing a visual indication of the average DC potential on said line.
- 4. The apparatus defined by claim 2 wherein said third DC current is equal in value to said first DC current and said fourth DC current is equal in value to said second DC current.
- 5. The apparatus defined by claim 2 wherein said first current is in a first direction on said twisted pair line and said second current is in the opposite direction on said twisted pair line.
- 6. The apparatus defined by claim 5 wherein said first and second currents alternate at a rate slow enough to permit each of said currents to reach a stable state on said line.
- 7. The apparatus defined by claim 2 wherein said predetermined potential is selected such that a determination can determine if said twisted pair line is terminated in other than said predetermined value, is open, is crossed, or is short circuited.
- 8. The apparatus defined by claim 7 including observable indicia which provides a visual indication of said determination.
- 9. The apparatus defined by claim 4 wherein said alternating of said first and second current by said first current means is asynchronous with said alternating of said third and fourth currents of said second current means.
- 10. The apparatus defined by claim 4 wherein said comparator means is a first comparator means and is coupled to said first end of said twisted pair line, and a second comparator means being substantially identical to said first comparator means is coupled to said second end of said twisted pair line.
- 11. The apparatus defined by claim 10 including observable indicia which provides a visual indication of said determination made by at least one of said comparators.
