Claims
- 1. A method for accessing technical data, the method comprising:
a plurality of data cache components registering with a first server, wherein each data cache component is located on a different computer system, wherein each data cache component provides access to one or more data stores; a first data cache component receiving a request from a first application for first technical data; the first data cache component relaying the request for the first technical data to the first server; the first server relaying the request for the first technical data to one or more of the other data cache components registered with the first server; the first server receiving the first technical data from one or more of the other data cache components registered with the first server; the first data cache component receiving the first technical data from the first server; and the first data cache component passing the first technical data to the first application.
- 2. The method of claim 1,
wherein said first data cache component receiving the request from the first application for first technical data comprises the first data cache component receiving a request from the first application for technical data that has one or more specified attributes; wherein said first data cache component relaying the request for the first technical data to the first server comprises the first data cache component relaying a request for technical data that has one or more specified attributes to the first server.
- 3. The method of claim 2,
wherein said first data cache component receiving the request from the first application for first technical data does not include the first data cache component receiving information specifying a location of the first technical data.
- 4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:
a second plurality of data cache components registering with a second server, wherein each data cache component is located on a different computer system, wherein each data cache component provides access to one or more data stores; the first data cache component receiving information from the second server specifying the second plurality of data cache components registered with the second server; the first data cache component relaying the request for the first technical data to the second server; and the first data cache component receiving the first technical data from the second server.
- 5. The method of claim 1,
wherein the first technical data comprises self-describing measurement data.
- 6. The method of claim 1,
wherein the first technical data comprises bulk data and attribute data.
- 7. The method of claim 1,
wherein the first technical data has associated meta-data; wherein the method further comprises the first server receiving the meta-data associated with the first technical data from one or more of the other data cache components registered with the first server.
- 8. A method for accessing technical data, the method comprising:
a plurality of data cache components registering with a first server, wherein each data cache component is located on a different computer system, wherein each data cache component provides access to one or more data stores; a first data cache component receiving information from the first server specifying the other data cache components registered with the first server; the first data cache component receiving a request from a first application for first technical data; the first data cache component relaying the request for the first technical data to one or more of the other data cache components registered with the first server; the first data cache component receiving the first technical data from one or more of the other data cache components registered with the first server; and the first data cache component passing the first technical data to the first application.
- 9. The method of claim 8, further comprising:
the first data cache component querying the first server to determine the other data cache components registered with the first server; wherein the first data cache component receives the information from the first server specifying the other data cache components registered with the first server in response to said querying.
- 10. A method for storing technical data, the method comprising:
a plurality of data cache components registering with a first server, wherein each data cache component is located on a different computer system, wherein each data cache component provides access to one or more data stores; a first data cache component receiving a request from a first application to store first technical data; the first data cache component relaying the request to store the first technical data to the first server; the first server relaying the request to store the first technical data to one or more of the other data cache components registered with the first server; and one or more of the other data cache components registered with the first server storing the first technical data.
- 11. The method of claim 10, further comprising:
the first data cache component receiving a request from the first application to store meta-data associated with the first technical data; the first data cache component relaying the request to store the meta-data associated with the first technical data to the first server; the first server relaying the request to store the meta-data associated with the first technical data to one or more of the other data cache components registered with the first server; and one or more of the other data cache components registered with the first server storing the meta-data associated with the first technical data.
- 12. A system comprising:
a plurality of data stores coupled through a network, wherein each of the data stores is operable to store self-describing data according to a particular data format, and wherein the self-describing data comprises measurement data and meta-data; wherein the meta-data describes a structure of its corresponding measurement data; and a first component coupled to the network which is operable to store the self-describing data in the plurality of data stores and using the particular data formats; wherein the first component includes a software interface for enabling application programs to access the self-describing data stored in the data stores regardless of data format.
