Claims
- 1. Apparatus for removing an exposed layer of soft tissue such as neurological-type tissue, said apparatus comprising:
- a tool tip having a longitudinal axis extending from one end of said tool tip; and
- a connecting member extending from said tool tip for connecting said tool tip to ultrasonic means such that said ultrasonic means ultrasonically vibrates said tool tip flexurally and said one end of said tool tip substantially entirely transversely to said longitudinal axis of said tool tip, whereby said transversely vibrating end of said tool tip can be swept back and forth across said exposed layer of soft tissue in a plane generally parallel to said transverse vibration of said tool tip end to comminute and thereby remove said exposed layer of soft tissue.
- 2. Apparatus according to claim 1; and additionally comprising:
- irrigation means positioned adjacent said tool tip for supplying fluid to a site adjacent said tool tip, and
- aspiration means also positioned adjacent to said tool tip for withdrawing fluid and suspended, comminuted tissue material from said site adjacent said tool tip at the moment of comminution to thereby maintain clear surgical vision of said swept tissue.
- 3. The apparatus according to claim 2 wherein said aspiration means has an aspiration vent valve responsively opened when said ultrasonic means is shut off.
- 4. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said connecting member has a longitudinal axis extending from said tool tip to said ultrasonic means and said tool tip end is a plane forming an angle of between 30 degrees and 90 degrees with said longitudinal axis of said connecting member.
- 5. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said tool tip is vibrated in the frequency range of from 20 KHz to 40 KHz with a transverse vibratory amplitude of said end of said tool tip of from about 0.0005 inch to about 0.005 inch peak to peak.
- 6. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said tool tip is vibrated at a frequency of about 25 KHz.
- 7. The apparatus according to claim 1; wherein said connecting member extends along a longitudinal axis, and said ultrasonic means vibrates said connecting member along its longitudinal axis; and further comprising means for converting said ultrasonic vibration of said connecting member along said longitudinal axis of said connecting member to said substantially entirely transverse vibration of said one end of said tool tip and connecting member.
- 8. The apparatus according to claim 1; and further comprising said ultrasonic means for ultrasonically vibrating at least said one end of said tool tip substantially entirely transversely to said longitudinal axis of said tool tip.
- 9. Apparatus for removing an exposed layer of soft tissue such as neurological-type tissue, said apparatus comprising:
- a hollow tool tip having a longitudinal axis extending from one end of said tool tip;
- irrigation and aspiration means for independently irrigating a site on said exposed layer of soft tissue when operatively swept by said end of said tool tip and aspirating said site to withdraw fluid and comminuted tissue mixed therewith whereby better vision of said site is obtained, one of said irrigation and aspiration means comprising said hollow tool tip; and
- a connecting member having a longitudinal axis extending at an angle from said longitudinal axis of said tool tip for connecting said tool tip to ultrasonic means for ultrasonically vibrating said tool tip flexurally and at least said one end of said tool tip substantially entirely transversely to said longitudinal axis of said tool tip for comminuting said exposed layer of soft tissue when swept by said end of said tool tip.
- 10. The apparatus according to claim 9; and further comprising said ultrasonic means for ultrasonically vibrating at least said one end of said tool tip substantially entirely transversely to said longitudinal axis of said tool tip.
- 11. For use in apparatus for removing an exposed layer of tissue such as neurological-type tissue and having ultrasonic means for producing ultrasonic vibrations, a tool comprising:
- a tool tip having a longitudinal axis extending from one end of said tool tip; and
- connecting member means having a longitudinal axis extending from said tool tip for connecting said tool tip to said ultrasonic means such that said ultrasonic means vibrates said connecting member means along said longitudinal axis thereof, said connecting member means cooperating with said tool tip for converting said longitudinal vibrations of said connecting member means into flexural vibrations of said tool tip and, at said end of said tool tip, vibrations substantially entirely transverse to said longitudinal axis of said tool tip, whereby said transversely vibrating end of said tool tip can be swept across said exposed layer of soft tissue in a plane generally parallel to said transverse vibration of said tool tip to comminute and thereby remove said exposed layer.
- 12. Apparatus as set forth in claim 11; and further comprising said ultrasonic means for producing said ultrasonic vibrations.
