Claims
- 1. A self-extinguishing thermoplastic polymeric composition comprising a thermoplastic polymer selected from the group consisting of olefinic polymers or copolymers, linear polyesters, unsaturated polyesters, polyurethanes, acrylonitrile-styrene copolymers (SAN), and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymers (ABS) and an effective amount of a self-extinguishing additive selected from the group consisting of pentaerythryl diphosphonates having the formula (I) ##STR8## and poly(pentaerythryl diphosphonates having the formula (II) ##STR9## where R.sub.1 is OH, OM, OR.sub.2 or NR.sub.3 R.sub.4 ; M is Zn, Ca, Mg, Al or Ti; R.sub.2 is a linear or branched C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl or a linear or branched mono- or poly-hydroxy substituted C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkyl; R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of H, a linear or branched unsubstituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, and a linear or branched amino-substituted or hydroxy-substituted C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkyl, a heterocyclic residue or R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 together form a non-aromatic heterocyclic structure on a nitrogen atom and optionally one or more other heteroatoms; X is --O--R.sub.5 --O-- or ##STR10## R.sub.5 is a linear or branched C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkyl or an aromatic radical; R.sub.6 is a linear or branched C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkyl or an aromatic or heterocyclic radical; R.sub.7 and R.sub.8 are the same or different, and are selected from the group consisting of H and a linear or branched C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl or R.sub.7 and R.sub.8 together form a C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkylene; and n is between 2 and 50.
- 2. The composition according to claim 1, wherein the amount of additive is from 15 to 35 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the thermoplastic polymer.
- 3. The composition according to claim 1, wherein the amount of the additive is from 15 to 25 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the thermoplastic polymer.
- 4. The composition according to claim 1, wherein part of the additive is replaced with a phosphorous compound selected from the group consisting of ammonium polyphosphate and a neutral phosphate of an amine having the formula NHR.sub.3 R.sub.4, where R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of H, a linear or branched unsubstituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, a linear or branched amino-substituted or hydroxy-substituted C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkyl, and a heterocyclic residue or where R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 together form a non-aromatic heterocyclic structure on a nitrogen atom and optionally one or more other heteroatoms.
- 5. The composition according to claim 2, wherein part of the additive is replaced with a phosphorous compound selected from the group consisting of ammonium polyphosphate and a neutral phosphate of an amine having the formula NHR.sub.3 R.sub.4, where R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of H, a linear or branched unsubstituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, a linear or branched amino-substituted or hydroxy-substituted C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkyl, and a heterocyclic residue or, where R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 together form a non-aromatic heterocyclic structure on a nitrogen atom and optionally one or more other heteratoms.
- 6. The composition according to claim 4, wherein the ammonium polyphosphate has the formula: ##STR11## where n is 50 to 1000.
- 7. The composition according to claim 4, wherein the neutral phosphate of the amine is melamine phosphate or ethylenediamine phosphate.
- 8. The composition according to claim 4, wherein the ratio between the additive having formula (I) or formula (II) and the phosphorous compound is from about 2:1 to 1:3.
- 9. The composition according to claim 5, wherein the ratio between the additive having formula (I) or formula (II) and the phosphorous compound is from about 2:1 to 1:3.
- 10. The composition according to claim 6, wherein the ratio between the additive having formula (I) or formula (II) and the phosphorous compound is from about 2:1 to 1:3.
- 11. The composition according to claim 1, wherein the thermoplastic polymer is a low, medium or high density polyethylene or polypropylene.
- 12. The composition according to claim 5, wherein the thermoplastic polymer is a low, medium or high density polyethylene or polypropylene.
- 13. The composition according to claim 6, wherein the thermoplastic polymer is a low, medium or high density polyethylene or polypropylene.
- 14. The composition according to claim 7, wherein the thermoplastic polymer is a low, medium or high density polyethylene or polypropylene.
- 15. The composition according to claim 8, wherein the thermoplastic polymer is a low, medium or high density polyethylene or polypropylene.
- 16. A method for providing flame-resistance to a thermoplastic polymer selected from the group consisting of olefinic polymers and copolymers, linear polyesters, unsaturated polyesters, polyurethanes, acrylonitrile-styrene copolymers (SAN) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymers (ABS), which comprises the step of adding to the polymer an effective amount of a self-extinguishing additive selected from the group consisting of pentaerthryl diphosphonates having the formula (I) ##STR12## and poly(pentaerythryl diphosphonates having the formula (II) ##STR13## where R.sub.1 is OH, OM, OR.sub.2 or NR.sub.3 R.sub.4 ; M is Zn, Ca, Mg, Al or Ti; R.sub.2 is a linear or branched C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl or a linear or branched C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 mono- or poly-hydroxy substituted alkyl; R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of H, a linear or branched unsubstituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, a linear or branched amino- or hydroxy-substituted C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkyl, and a heterocyclic residue or R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 together form a non-aromatic heterocyclic structure on a nitrogen atom and optionally one or more other heteratoms; X is --O--R.sub.5 --O-- or ##STR14## R.sub.5 is a linear or branched C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkyl or an aromatic radical;
- R.sub.6 is a linear or branched C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkyl or an aromatic or heterocyclic radical; R.sub.7 and R.sub.8 are the same or different, and are selected from the group consisting of H and a linear or branched C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl or R.sub.7 and R.sub.8 together form a C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkylene; and n is between 2 and 50.
